We are filling our thankful tree with many 'leaves' of Thanks and talking about all the many things we are thankful for each day. We have been learning about the voyage the Pilgrims took and the help they got from the Native Americans. We have been making Mayflower ships in recognition of the Pilgrims, and Dream catchers in recognition of the Native Americans. We went on a 'feather hunt' outside to find different feathers for our Dream-catchers and turkey feathers. In Spanish we are learning the names of different foods we eat.

The children are becoming more and more confident when handling our Hermit crabs, and some are even learning the different parts of a Hermit crab. Ms. Denise's class has a tank of very hungry caterpillars that are growing bigger and bigger and we are learning about the lifecycle of the butterfly.
We are going to be making decorations for your Thanksgiving table and also making 'No-bake' pumpkin cookies on Tuesday next week.
Thank you, Beverly, for your help in planting the corn, beans, tomatoes and herbs.
Thank you to Ines's family for gifting our classroom with a 'Rootvue". We look forward to planting seeds and watching them grow after the break.
If you signed up to bring in an ingredient for our no-bake pumpkin cookies, please remember to bring it in on Monday. Thank you!

This was a great week in lower elementary! We battled the cold with some yummy hot chocolate.
The book report presentations were wonderful! The children really worked hard on their reports. The next book report will be due on or before December 15. Look for more information in your child's folder that went home today.
We also did a fun experiment on static electricity. The children each had a chance to give a hypothesis, then do the experiment for themselves and record their findings. We will continue to do more science experiments throughout the year.
We learned all about the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh. The children worked on a special art project trying to do one of Van Gogh's works on their own. They all did an amazing job!
Many children were working together on a Solar System project that was a follow up from our lesson last week. They created their own Solar System and did beautiful work.
Have a very happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday! We are thankful for each one of you!

It has been a wonderful week in the classroom and everyone is into a great flow in the classroom. Students are working diligently on their math, geometry and language arts activities.
In math, the sixth years are working with successive and non-successive squaring and the Hands-on-Equations material for algebra. Fifth year students are working with fractions and decimals. Several students are working with the decimal checkerboard and we are preparing to build one of our own for the classroom. Fourth year students continue their study of various polygons and are practicing with the checkerboard and golden bead frame for multiplication.
For science, we enjoyed learning about the Centripetal and Centrifugal forces and students offered their experiments showing Newton's laws of motion. Everyone also enjoyed our experiment with a penny inside of a balloon showing the Centripetal force at work. Gravity was discussed as well and all tied into our study of astronomy and our solar system.
This week in The Story of the World, we learned about the aborigines of Australia, their way of life and their stories about how the large island of New Zealand formed.
After our visit from Mr. Pronoun and his friends last week, we had a visit from Judge Grammar and Sargent Parsing. They helped us review all that we have learned in Grammar Land so far this year and gave all the kids of School-room-shire a challenge to find all the nouns, articles and pronouns in a specific text. They also worked in groups to brainstorm various ways to use these parts of speech in written text.

Fourth year students began working on a new language practice called the Complete writer, by Susan Wise Bauer, the same author that offered us The Story of the World. In literature groups, 4th years continue reading Frindle, while 5th years read Hatchet and 6th year students are discussing Catherine, Called Birdy.
Monday, Nov. 24th, we will go to the AMC Theater at Westshore Plaza to see "Big Hero Six". We are asking each student to bring in $20.00 to cover the cost of the movie and one drink and one snack item. Please have your child bring their lunch as normal since we will be eating at school before leaving for the movie.
Tuesday, Nov. 25th, we will go to Al Lopez Park for a fun field day and free play. Please bring a bag lunch to eat at the park. We need one more driver for this activity, please.
We wish everyone a safe, warm and joyous holiday next week. See you in December!

This week we went to the YMCA where we did cardio, racquet ball, and worked out in the fitness room. In Spanish, we studied facts about turkeys, the Dominican Republic, and Thanksgiving vocabulary. We are almost done with our class in Florida Virtual School for the semester and should be done in one or two weeks. Also, we had Earth Science where we learned about fresh water and wetlands.
Then, on Thursday, we had Reading Writing Workshop where we learned about setting and theme. Finally, on Friday we had a service meeting where we worked on our presentation for our service projects. We also had a Wordly Wise mid term test and a tennis lesson later that day. That's this week's news. I hope you enjoyed finding out what we did this week.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Our week went by with diverse classes. We read a short story about a family of pigs whose main activity was to splash in the mud. Students were familiar with the vocabulary, which made the reading more interesting. They also loved the whimsical pictures in the book. We wrapped up the reading by looking at photos of El Totumo mud volcano in Colombia. The students were amazed and enjoyed the pictures about this natural wonder they did not even knew existed! We also reviewed "Mr. Turkey", a short poem in Spanish and sang a song about all the things we are thankful for.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We concluded our unit about adjectives, their place in a sentence, and the changes that happen when nouns are singular, plural, masculine or feminine. Each student wrote at least five titles for books. Some of them were, "The Enchanted Tree", "The Stolen Jewelry", "The Magic Mountain", "The Hungry Dragon", "The Mechanical Man", and "The Talking Flowers" to name a few. All this vocabulary is in Spanish, of course.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Our assignment for this week was research on the Dominican Republic, to which we added typical foods, musical instruments and dances to our original format. Our group composition was "all about turkeys" and individual readings were about ways to prepare food and the clothes we wear according to the changes in the weather.
TRIVIA FACTS:
1.) The first University in the American continent was built in Dominican Republic.
2.) La Romana and Punta Cana are two of the most beautiful resorts that you can find in the Caribbean. |
