Thank you, Parents!

As we start November

and look toward the

Thanksgiving holiday,

it seems fitting to express our gratitude to all of the

parents for making

BeachParkSchool and its community.

Children's school experiences are enriched by the many ways parents are involved - sharing traditions, driving and participating on field trips, helping with special projects at school such as the yearbook, running the library, bringing in snacks, donating equipment, helping set up and clean up school Cultural Days and events, reading to their child's class and organizing the school auction.

Thank you, parents, for all you do at BPS!

Primary

Jenna, Lex and Macy planting seeds.

This week we focused on things that grow in nature, and the difference between a plant and food. We had fun learning that a Tomato is a plant and Ketchup is made from tomatoes which is a food. Wheat is a plant that we make bread from, which is also a food. We also looked closely at how a Lima Bean grows, by conducting an ongoing investigation watching lima beans grow in our front window. We are learning the different names of fruits and vegetables in Spanish.

Ms. Denise's class planted our pumpkin seeds and talked about the legend of the "Three Sisters."  According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans, and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together. This tradition of interplanting corn, beans and squash in the same mounds is widespread among Native American farming societies and is a sustainable system that provides long-term soil fertility and a healthy diet. Growing a Three Sisters garden is a wonderful way to feel more connected to the history of this land while having lots of fun!

Thanks to Lukas and Marcus's grandfather, Jerry for reading "The Tiny Seed" by, Eric Carle, to the class, it was a nice addition to our work.

We have been enjoying the change in the weather and have been talking about the different seasons. In light of that, please make sure your children's jacket, gloves, etc have their names in them.

Thank you Kendra and Beverly for your hard work helping us get our garden set up.

Lower Elementary

LE eating their healthy lunches

The children in lower elementary have been working hard this week! We learned about the life and works of Beethoven. We also did some activities to promote kindness in the classroom. In art the children painted the gargoyles they made last week.

The students were introduced to a new work plan. It has a place for them to write the work they are doing and the time they start and finish the work. It will take some time for them to adjust, but many are already able fill in the times on their own. We are hopeful that this change will help the children make better use of their time and become more aware of how much time they are spending on each work. It will also give them lots of practice on telling time!

Tuesday, November 11 is our field trip to the Urban Oasis Hydroponics Farm. The farm is located at 5416 W. Linebaugh Ave. You can check out their website at www.urbanoasisfarm.com. Please make sure your child has on closed-toed shoes. We will be leaving the school at 9:30 and returning by 11:30. Thank you to all who volunteered to drive!

Upper Elementary

UE on the Victory Ship

This week we studied, as part of our history, the Tang Dynasty. Students learned about the change between the Sui Dynasty and the Tang and how this shift helped move the Chinese people forward in a positive way. We also enjoyed making our version of a wood block print of a Chinese character.

We continued our reading of M. L. Nesbitt's Grammar Land as well and are working with the Montessori upper elementary advanced grammar symbolization. For example: Students learned about the large black triangle that represents the noun, and now are learning how to symbolize proper, common, abstract,, and collective nouns. This work will continue with each part of speech and lead into an in-depth sentence analysis work.

For science, we discussed stellar nucleosynthesis, along with the distance of the sun to the earth, the difference between the speed of sound and light and enjoyed a fun experiment at the park. Students lined up on opposite ends of the park and while one group used a stop watch to time the experiment, the other group struck a shovel filled with flour with a hammer. Students immediately could see the spray of the flour, followed a split second later by the sound, showing the difference between the speed of sound and light.

Math Facts: We will continue working with the 8 x tables through next week and will quiz them on Friday. Students found the 6 and 7 x tables to be more challenging. Please help your child review both the 6 x and 7 x tables.

This Wednesday we enjoyed our first field trip. Students went on a tour of Port of Tampa Bay and enjoyed learning about how important the Port is to our local economy and community. In addition, we stepped back in time aboard the World War II S.S. American Victory Ship. It was a wonderful tour that taught us not only about that ship, but also about the challenges and dangers faced by the Crew members during the time the ship sailed.

Middle School

Going to the YMCA!

This was a quick, but packed week. On Thursday, we went to the YMCA. At the YMCA, we worked on our own personal fitness.

We had a yearbook meeting on Monday. If anyone has pictures

from the different field trips or cultural day that you can share

with us, we would love to see them.

This week in Spanish, we learned about numerous things like

Reflexive Verbs, Pharmacy items, and different types of ice cream.

In Earth Science we took a chapter test and went over Carbon-14 dating.  In algebra we also had a quiz and started learning

about ratios. In art, we worked on tessellations.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Rhymes, songs, rounds and games in Spanish took most of our time this week. We had some of our lessons outside to benefit of the good weather and for a change of scenery. We also completed a worksheet on the letter "B".

UPPER ELEMENTARY: We expanded our vocabulary via flash cards and by walking from the peace garden to our actual garden. This exercise had a double purpose; to list the objects we encountered in Spanish and report the noises and sounds that we heard. Students responded enthusiastically to our "learning walk".

MIDDLE SCHOOL: With the help of our textbooks, we read some interesting facts about mascots, buildings in
Madrid, extra curriculum activities, ice cream consumption around the world, and types of movies. Reflexive verbs were introduced and we practiced them in complete sentences. and then, we tried a variety of ice cream flavors.

TRIVIA FACT: Many streets in
Tampa are named after Spanish cities. Some of them are Vizcaya, Barcelona, Almeria, Las Palmas, Granada, San Luis, San Juan, and San Pedro among others.
