Parent Education Night

Thanks to all the parents who came to our Parent Ed Night. We hope you enjoyed learning all about the Montessori Math Curriculum. Plans will be made soon for another evening when we can share more about Montessori Philosophy and Lessons.

Montessori Conference

Next Friday and Saturday, many faculty members will be attending the International Montessori Council's Annual Conference in Sarasota. There are many terrific workshops planned and getting together with other Montessori teachers and administrators is always refreshing.

Primary students counting pumpkin seeds

The classes are having lots of spooky fun this week! We dissected our large pumpkin this week and were able to use our senses to see, feel, smell and touch the different parts. Then we carved our jack-o-lantern and had a hands-on lesson with the parts of the pumpkin. Each child had a turn to scoop out the seeds, feel the pulp, and help count the many seeds. We used our decimal system materials to keep track of the "seed chain" and discovered how math appears everywhere in nature. There were 311 in Ms. Lisa's pumpkin and 354 in Ms. Denise's Pumpkin. They all read the book "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything".

Pumpkin scrubbing has been a popular practical life work in both classes. We are also learning about the parts of the bat and spider in the science area. Did you know that some bats can eat over 5000 mosquitoes per night and help to pollinate many tropical plants?

We will continue our lessons on seeds in the garden with the planting of corn, beans, and squash. We will be observing how these "companion" plants help each other as they grow. Thanks to Ms. Beverly for the help in planting and maintaining the garden.

In Ms. Lisa's class we have been practicing being "BUCKET FILLERS" instead of "BUCKET DIPPERS", we read the book "HAVE YOU FILLED A BUCKET TODAY?" by Carol McCloud. Ask your child whose Bucket they filled today???

Thank you to Olga Mokin (Elizabeth's mom) for reading with Ms. Lisa's class on Wednesday.

Thanks to those who attended parent night, we hope you enjoyed it!

Lower Elementary

Addison and Presley counting the 10 chain

Thank you to all who were able to attend the Cultural Day last Friday! The children had a great time and were very excited to showcase all their hard work. Another thank you to all who were able to attend the Parent's night last night. We trust you found it helpful and informative.

This week has been full of excitement as well. Our Halloween party was a great deal of fun! Thank you for all the food donations that helped make our party a success! The children were also excited about carving a pumpkin and learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin. They even counted the seeds that we pulled out! 475!!!

The children seem to be really enjoying the new spelling material. They all had the lesson this week, and many have already completed several lists! We have also been continuing our study of Europe and Oceania by learning about the different biomes and animals of the biomes. It is so great to see them excited about the work!
Upper Elementary

Upper Elementary at Tennis

We have had a great week getting back into the flow of the work cycle. Students quickly and excitedly got back to their math, geometry, language and cultural work choices. We are proud of everyone for making this transition easily from a week of cultural projects and for taking responsibility for their work choices. Students are especially excited about The Story of the World history and with the continuing saga of Judge Grammar and Grammarland.

We started our Friday off-campus trips once again. This week we are playing Tennis. The sessions are held on the City of Tampa Grady Courts beside Grady Elementary. Students leave school at 1:45pm and return at 3:15pm. The cost per student is $30.00, payable to Beach Park School. Tennis will be taught by Jonathan Collazo of Elite Tennis of Tampa.

We are very excited about our first field trip next week to the Tampa Port Authority. As a reminder, we will be visiting on Wednesday, November 5th. We will be leaving promptly at 8:30 that morning. We have also confirmed our visit to the World War II SS American Victory Mariners Museum the same day. After the port tour, we will enjoy lunch together and then visit the VictoryMuseum. We will return at about 1:00pm. If you would be willing to drive that morning, please contact Mr. Greg.

For our math facts next week, we will be working with the 8x tables. Any students who need additional support with the 6x or 7x tables will have daily practice sessions with them. Please practice with students at home to support our work in the classroom. Many students could still use practice with previous work, especially the 3x, 4x, 5x tables.

Middle School

Nathan on a bed of nails!

This week we've worked on rational expressions in Algebra.  In Earth Science we learned about erosion and took a chapter test on Friday. In Spanish we learned about the ocelot, rubber trees, and El Salvador. On Monday, we had our yearbook meeting.  Please remember to send in any pictures that you have taken. On Tuesday, we picked up our Pumpkins that we made in Art. On Wednesday, we went to the YMCA.

We went to MOSI on Thursday and looked at the interactive exhibits; we did the earthquake, hurricane and tornado simulators. We also learned about the human anatomy.  Finally, on Friday we had Reading Writing Workshop where we read "Tell Tale Hearts" by Edgar Allan Poe in honor of Halloween.  Our first tennis class at Grady tennis courts with Upper Elementary was a lot of fun.

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had a fun time reading about ten dragons and their ways to amuse themselves, e.g. tossing their toys around, watching horror films so that they could scream loud, using kitchen utensils as musical instruments, and other unorthodox ways to enjoy themselves. We also practiced our seasonal poems about Mrs. Pumpkin and Mr. Ghost. We then wrapped up our lessons with a worksheet related to the Halloween Season.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: Marine Animals was our main topic this week. A story about a shark sparked our conversational Spanish for the week. We also practiced the name of 15 marine creatures in Spanish and used them in a crossword puzzle. It was a fun and productive week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: We researched the country of El Salvador. This journey completes our trip in Central America. Our next stop will take us to countries in the Caribbean. Ocelots and the Rubber tree were our Conversational Themes. We also collectively wrote a paragraph about each of the above. Did you know that more than 75% of rubber production in the world is used to make tires?

TRIVIA FACT: Cano Cristales is a river in Colombia like no other. It is referred to as the "Liquid Rainbow". The water in Cano Cristales during certain months of the year runs in red, blue, yellow, orange and green in a vibrant natural display that happens nowhere else on Earth!.
