Primary
Tampa Firefighters visit with Primary classes.

This week we finished our daVinci robots and we will continue our journey through Europe. Our thanks to the robot construction team for your time and amazing creativity with recycled materials!

On Tuesday we had a special visit from the fire department. The firemen shared some valuable information on fire safety and gave the children some hands-on experiences with their equipment and truck. They explained how to "stop, drop, and roll", and beware of "stranger danger."

We also did some fun research on the circumference of our pumpkins. We measured our pumpkins (and some of our friends) to see what or who was biggest around the middle. The children then graded the measurements from shortest (10 inches) to longest (41 inches). We also tried to predict if pumpkins sink or float. We then filled a large bucket with water and our friends were really surprised that even the largest pumpkin floated. Next we will carve the largest pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern and examine the pulp, seeds, flesh, and stem.

The organic garden is looking great and the children have been planting seeds and composting organic waste.

Thank you Beverly and Kendra for your time and hard work, the children are really enjoying the experience.

Lower Elementary
Addison, Presley, Gideon and Garrett planting in the garden.

Thank you to all who were able to come in for conferences last Friday! It is very much appreciated as we know your time is valuable. If you were not able to come and would like a conference, please email to schedule a time.

The children were busy again this week with preparation for the cultural day that is fast approaching! They have been working on passports, suitcases and their own presentations. The children had a great time again this week in yoga! In art class, the children worked on a fun Halloween project. They should have their coat of arms finished in time for our cultural day!

The book report presentations that we have seen have been excellent! The next book report will be due Monday, November 17. This report can be on a book of their choice. A book report form was sent home today, but it does not have to be filled out. It is there as one of the choices. Any other creative ideas are also welcome!

Upper Elementary
Alex, Ava, Aiden, Tristan, Nick, Nathan and Maya working on their suitcases for Cultural Day.

Our cultural festival is quickly approaching and here in the upper elementary classroom we are very busy completing our continent projects, making hundreds of passports and putting together and decorating our suitcases. This looks to be a wonderful festival in the making.

We are asking students to bring in a small photo, passport size, to place in the front of their passports. Please help your child choose one for their passport.

In addition, please feel free to help students' complete projects and research at home, if needed, and to pick up any support items the students might need for their continent projects. Students can choose to wear costumes that are cultural dress from the region they are studying and to bring in food samples made at home for the student booths. Just remember that we will have a lot of hungry travelers, so make small samples that can serve many. (This is separate from the regular covered dish item and is a choice, not a requirement)

Our first field trip is set and we are excited for the opportunity to visit the Tampa Port Authority. The Port offers guided boat tours to the public and we will be visiting on Wednesday, November 5th. We will be leaving promptly at 8:30 that morning. We have also confirmed our visit to the World War II SS American Victory Mariners Museum the same day. After the port tour, we will enjoy lunch together and then visit the VictoryMuseum. We will return at about 1:00pm. If you would be willing to drive that morning, please contact Mr. Greg.

Thank you very much to all that took part in the conference day last week and to those who set up times on different days. We are all a team, working together, to help our kids be successful and reach their full potential. We greatly appreciate all of your help and support!

For our math facts this week, we are extending our work on the 6x tables. We will quiz them next Wednesday. Please practice with students at home to support our work in the classroom. Many students could still use practice with previous work, especially the 3x, 4x,5x tables.

Middle School
Nathan, Lauren, Andrew, Avery, Maya and Pamela at Marine Quest.

This week in middle school we worked on our culture day projects.  We learned a lot of new vocabulary in Spanish about chores and houses.

We had a very fun time at Marine Quest Days @ MOTE.  We got to see a lot of very interesting animals and how they are handled. We learned about amphibious animals, red tide, and fish anatomy.

In Earth Science we learned about erosion with our new teacher for the week Ms. Troncoso.

In art we learned how to create pumpkins out of clay, and created some nice pumpkins.  We still have a lot of work to do on our projects for Cultural Day!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had an excellent review about nouns and verbs that we used in our daily activities. The way to conduct this review was by assembling two big puzzles where all students participated. We also completed our own worksheet based on the above topic. It was a very productive week.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: We used vocabulary from 20 different categories; marine animals, flowers, objects in the classroom, fruits, writing, and eating utensils were among the chosen categories. After we completed the list of words, we used them as our conversational theme for the week. We rounded up this unit by specifically defining some of the nouns in the list.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Two main units occupied our time this week; things that we used to like as children and the weekly chores in our house or apartment. Both titles required a lot of concentration because we were working on the past tense of two irregular verbs; "to play" and "to like" in Spanish.

We also practiced these lessons in the written and oral form.

TRIVIA FACT: According to a Brazilian legend, the boa constrictors are not to be feared, since they are the protectors of the fields and the natural resources in the Amazonian basin.
