Screening
Next Tuesday
Next Tuesday,
screening will be offered for Speech/Language/Hearing and Motor/Sensory Skills.
A form has been sent home today for Primary and Lower Elementary students' parents to complete if you wish to have your child screened. Parents of older students may contact the office for a form.
Therapists from Beth Ingram Therapy Services
will conduct the screening and provide a report for parents.
When children are screened, they will sit with the therapist one-on-one. The screening process is made enjoyable and comfortable for the child.
Early screening, diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental delays often results in more rapid resolution of issues.
Screening is economically priced at $25 for Speech/Language/Hearing and $25 for Motor/Sensory Skills.

This week we are noticing the slightest bit of fall in the air and we welcome the new season!
On Wednesday, Ms. Lisa shared a holiday her family celebrates - the Jewish New Year. We spoke about reflecting on our past year and making sure our good choices out-weighed our poor choices. We ate apples dipped in honey and got to taste raisin challah bread.
We introduced our Montessori Peace Rose to our new friends. We discussed ways to use it to problem solve and create peace with our friends.
In Spanish we had fun describing apples (manzanas) by color, rojo, amarillo, verde, y rosado.
We are also beginning our cultural journey to Italy where Leonardo Da Vinci sketched plans for a humanoid robot in 1495. We will be creating our own robots for cultural day and request that you send in the following materials for our creations: boxes, paper towel and tp rolls, egg cartons, washed yogurt cups and other small plastic cups, plastic caps (for knobs and buttons), old CD's, vegetable cans, soda cans, nuts and bolts and wire.
Ms. Kendra, Hayes's mom, and Ms. Beverly, Macy's mom, came in this week and helped the children plant seeds. They are starting plants for the garden. (Please see the Garden Workday article below in Office Notes.)
Mrs. Mona, Krisha's mom, shared the Alphabet book with Ms. Denise's class and Maryanne Nathan, Ava's grandmother, read to Ms. Lisa's class this week. Thank you so very much for reading to our friends!

Lower Elementary

It was another great week in lower elementary!
We had a special presentation about the autumnal equinox by Mr. Dick. The children were able to go out on the playground and each play a part in what happens to make the seasons. (See photo at left.)
They also had lessons on the adjective and the compass rose as well as many other individual lessons.
The new garden beds are beautiful, and the children will start planting soon. Thank you to all those who made donations and helped with the garden!
A special thank you to Inara who brought us apple butter from New York to have on our bread! She also brought in many beautiful leaves to show the fall colors.
Just a reminder that the first book report is due on or before Oct. 13.

Upper Elementary and Middle School at Cedarkirk for their 2 day team-building retreat
|
This week in the Upper Elementary we had a busy first three days of the week, as we were headed on our over night trip to Cedarkirk for Thursday and Friday. Students have begun their cultural projects and are working with our biome maps of Europe, along with the European pin maps. Students are making their own maps of Europe and the country of their choice for our cultural festival.
Students were very excited for our trip to Cedarkirk, where we went for our two-day retreat on Thursday. We enjoyed team building activities, canoeing, tree climbing and a night hike, followed by s'mores, yum!
Along with our cultural work, we have begun our service learning for the year. Students are working on presentations for their cause of choice and this week at Cedarkirk, we voted for our service learning officers. We are working along side the middle school with this project and are looking forward to a great year of serving our community.

This week was amazing!
On Tuesday, we had a math test on undoing problems with multiple equations.
We also had a writing prompt draft due. We are practicing
our writing skills.
In Earth Science this week, we learned about earthquakes and the study of seismic activity.
For Wordly Wise we had to do a crossword puzzle on our past words for review. Finally we had a homophone quiz on O and P words.
On Thursday, Middle School and Upper Elementary left school to go to Cedarkirk. Cedarkirk is our fall retreat that we go to every year. Middle School activities included fun team challenges run by Pathfinders. Cedarkirk was a blast as usual!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had a fun and active week. As an extension of a reading about boomerangs, students made and decorated their own boomerangs and successfully tested them on the basketball court. It was very exciting. We also used flash cards to review classroom objects. Conversational Spanish on a daily basis is our goal at all levels.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We divided our lessons into three categories: seasons and their relationship with what we wear, months of the year and holidays and weather expressions. A large vocabulary was practiced as we worked on the lessons and many of the words were used as opening sentences for conversational phrases and sentences.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: To honor the beginning of Otoņo (October), we had a vocabulary list of words beginning with O in Spanish, which were used in written and oral compete sentences. Nicaragua was the country of our choice to research this week. Students used dictionaries and computers to write data pertaining to this Central American country.
TRIVIA FACT: Nicaragua has an extensive and diverse flora and fauna. It is home to more than 500 species of orchids. There are also 15 kinds of venomous snakes, including pit vipers, rattlesnakes, corals, copperheads and the infamous pelagic sea snake. SSSSSSSSSS.

Parent Teacher Conferences - Friday, October 10
Please contact administration by phone or email to schedule a conference with your child's teacher. You may call 813-289-3747 or send an email.
Health Alert
In HIllsborough County, there have recently been several reported cases of Cryptosporidiosis, known as Crypto, a parasitic disease that can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and a slight fever. Crypto can be spread by swallowing contaminated water or contaminated food. It can also spread from person to person, especially in settings where diapers are changed.
Anyone infected with Crypto should avoid swimming in pools or water parks. Swimming should be avoided even if the pool is properly chlorinated because Crypto is highly resistant to chlorine.
We are increasing our emphasis on handwashing at school in response to this news. Basic hygiene and frequent, thorough handwashing are practices recommended to avoid Crypto.
If your child has any of the symptoms of this parasite, please contact your physician and do not send your child to school until a possible Crypto infection is ruled out.
Individual Photos -To Be Rescheduled
We'll let you know when we have a new date for the Individual School Photos.
Garden Workday
Help is needed in the School Garden on Friday, October 4th starting at 8:30 am.
A truckload of soil is being delivered and we could use help moving it via wheel barrel to the new raised vegetable beds. Bring a wheel barrel and shovel if you have them. Preferably this is a work day for adults only as the children will be involved with the fun part - planting and harvesting!
There will be a short informal discussion before the work begins regarding plans & vision for the school garden. Thanks.
