Colds, Coughs, and Germs

Along with the joys of the start of the new school year come the inevitable
colds, sore throats
and other maladies of the season.

Please be assured that we are teaching and practicing good handwashing along with other measures to reduce the spread of germs.

To help keep everyone healthy, we ask that you not send your child to school if he or she has a cold or other symptoms of illness.

It is also important for your child to wait
24 hours after having a fever before returning to school.

We understand that a sick child can create stress for a family in many ways.

If all sick children are kept at home, they should be healthier and stronger, with the benefit of fewer sick days for
children and parents.

Primary
Vinayak carefully balanced each piece of the broad stair on end!

Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time this weekend to to trim, rake, dig and prepare our garden. It looks fantastic and ready for some planting. We appreciate Ms. Beverly, Macy's mom, for heading up the garden effort this year.

Miss Denise discovered a gecko habitat while clearing out the composter! We transferred the gecko and all the gecko eggs to a terrarium for the children to study. This has inspired us to study parts of a reptile and learn all about geckos. We have let the gecko back into nature but are keeping an eye on the eggs hoping for some baby geckos soon.

The Primary classes are continuing to talk about apples, their different parts and functions. We read the story of Johnny Appleseed this week.

Next week, please send in an apple with your child for our apple tasting. We will taste the different varieties of apples in the next couple of weeks.

An important topic we discussed this week was being kind to our friends and using helpful not hurtful words. We played the compliment game:  friends discovered how good it feels to give and receive a compliment.

Thank you for the washcloths. We now have perfect sized icepacks for our little bumps and bruises.

Thank you, Mr. Dick, for the balance beam, We will be using it to work on our gross motor skills.

Thank you to Ms. Susan, Wyatt's mom, for helping the Kindergarten students learn about the library and pick out books to check out. And yet another heartfelt thank you goes to Ms. Brigitte, Greyson's mom, who sent custom-made cloth book bags and decorating material for the Kindergarten students to personalize.

Please remember to return any library books and class books when done reading them.

Have a lovely weekend!

Lower Elementary
Leyton enjoys a good book

We had another great week here in Lower Elementary! The children were paired up and each pair chose the country they are going to research for the upcoming cultural day. They have really great ideas that they are excited to showcase.

We had our first trip to the art studio this week and it was so much fun! The children designed and made their own coat of arms out of clay. They will be painting them next week after they are fired.

It is wonderful to see the children eager to learn new lessons. They have been working on the first three parts of speech: noun, article and adjective. They have also been working more with fractions and clocks, as well as many other math lessons.

Information about the first book report will be going home today. Also look for a calendar for sharing. Whatever day has your child's name is his/her day to bring in something to share. If you have any questions about the book report or sharing, please let me know!

Upper Elementary

This week we were thrilled to enjoy our 6th and 3rd grade performance of the Montessori first great lesson. The students offered a fun and fresh way of presenting this lesson. They performed for the 1st and 2nd year students, along with the Upper Elementary 4th and 5th year students. It was a great success!

We were also fortunate to introduce several new materials associated with our culture continent studies. We introduced the biome map of Europe, its activity set, and the pin maps for Europe. We also introduced the European stencil set, which students are enjoying creating maps of Europe and coloring the biomes. ( See photo of Naveen above.)

Though next week is a short week, students are still responsible for working on their math facts.  Next week we will be working with the 5x tables. We are also asking students to study facts previously practiced in order to support retention.

This week students will be working on the 4x tables. Please help support their memorization of the math facts at home with fun fact games. There are many resourses online. Here are a few: Multiplication.com , MathIsFun.com (interactive on-line quiz), Educationworld.com and FunBrain.com

Thank you to all the students who are working hard every evening on their MobyMax homework. Parents, please help support your child and make sure that all homework is complete. Remember, we are asking for 2.5 hours a week, 1.5 hours of math and 1 hour of language/grammar. That equates to 30 minutes each day of the school week. For example: Mon.-math, Tues.-language, Wed.-math, Thurs.-language, Fri.-math.

**CedarKirk is next week. All students should have returned their registration forms and made payment for the trip. We leave Thursday morning and return Friday afternoon. If you have any questions about the CedarKirk trip, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Greg at greg@beachparkschool.org .

Middle School
Middle School & Sixth Year students in
Reading/Writing Workshop

In Middle School, we are working on our Southern Europe Atlas.

In Earth Science this week, we talked about renewable and nonrenewable resources. We also had test on types of rocks.

In Math we had lessons on order of operations and learning how to solve them. We also had a homophone test on J,K,L, and M.

On Thursday, we got to go to the YMCA for PE.

Have a great long weekend!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We continue enriching our vocabulary with everyday words. This week we focused on musical instruments accompanied with two related songs. This is a very active group, movements and rounds are incorporated into the lessons to keep them interested and productive. They are advancing at a steady pace.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: We read a story about a race among different animals. Interestingly enough, the winner of the competition was a COQUI (tiny frog, indigenous to the island of Puerto Rico). After the reading, we had True/False statements about the story as well as a period of answers and questions. We also used three games: Association, Nouns, and Verbs to complete our Conversational Topic for the week. It was an enjoyable and productive activity.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: To honor one of the Central American countries celebrating its independence in September, we highlighted GUATEMALA. We learned the meaning of the name, its language, population monetary unit, religion, natural resources, industries and many other facts about this picturesque country. We dedicated some time to a research about the Quetzal; now in the list of endangered birds and to the history of corn (maiz). We now have a very good understanding about the Then and Now of one of the most popular foods in the world.

Some students beautifully illustrated how corn was the object of admiration, respect and almost adoration by the Mayans and other civilizations and now is just an export product with a dollar sign on it! (See Maya's "then and now" illustration above.)

TRIVIA FACT: Guatemala is the number one producer of jade in the world. It is also the country where BLUE DENIM was created AKA blue jeans. They soon became an international hit with Levis and other companies taking notice.
