Garden Workday:
Saturday, 9/13
8:30 am
Calling all gardeners and
those who are handy with carpentry, too!
Parent Beverly Addison is heading up the garden this year and invites you to help Saturday. Tasks: cleaning up the garden area, cleaning out the planting beds and building the beds higher.
The garden could also use some soil. If you would like to donate a bag or two, it would be a valuable contribution. Preference is for organic manure or mushroom compost, both available at Lowe's.
All garden contributions and help will be appreciated!

This week the children learned how to mix primary colors in order to create secondary colors. Our painting work was well used! We sang many counting songs, which inspired many math works such as the teens, the tens and the hundred board.
Miss Maria gave our kindergarten friends a tour of our library and they were able to check out a couple of books to take home. Some kindergarteners started making their own sight word flip books.
We are using our skills with scissors to cut along straight lines within a maze to make hanging mobiles.
We are working on our "restaurant manners" during snack and lunch time. Thank you for packing the place mats and napkins for your child.
The children in Ms. Denise's class are starting to learn about apples. We have introduced the parts of the apple in science, apple slicing in practical life and making an apple tree in art. We are also learning about the life cycles of plants and the important role of bees in growing our food.
We are asking for a set of infant wash cloths. We will moisten these, put them in separate Ziploc bags and keep them in the freezer to use as mini ice packs for any bumps that occasionally occur. Please email Miss Lisa if you can help out with this.
A big thank you to the Shah family for their generous donation for us to purchase new classroom materials!

We had another great week here in Lower Elementary! The children were paired up and each pair chose the country they are going to research for the upcoming cultural day. They have really great ideas that they are excited to showcase.
We had our first trip to the art studio this week and it was so much fun! The children designed and made their own coat of arms out of clay. They will be painting them next week after they are fired.
It is wonderful to see the children eager to learn new lessons. They have been working on the first three parts of speech: noun, article and adjective. They have also been working more with fractions and clocks, as well as many other math lessons.
Information about the first book report will be going home today. Also look for a calendar for sharing. Whatever day has your child's name is his/her day to bring in something to share. If you have any questions about the book report or sharing, please let me know!

Upper Elementary
|
Though it is just the fourth week of school, we already have a great flow going in our Upper Elementary classroom, especially for this point in the year. Students are working very hard on their weekly work and are coming into the classroom in the morning ready to make work choices, which is wonderful to see.
We are also excited about our cultural projects and are planning our presentation of the first great lesson this week. We will begin practicing our timeline of life play next week, along with starting to present our timeline projects that we have been working on since the beginning of the year. Along with our academic work, we started our weekly trips to art. This Friday, we will be going swimming to kick off our weekly off-campus trips.

Can you find MPK in this photo?

This week students will be working on the 4x tables. Please help support their memorization of the math facts at home with fun fact games. There are many resourses online. Here are a few: Multiplication.com , MathIsFun.com (interactive on-line quiz), Educationworld.com and FunBrain.com
**CedarKirk is just a short two weeks away now and there are still a few students who have not paid. Please, if you have not already filled out the waiver for your child and paid for the trip, do so at this time.
Thank you to those who have already offered to sponsor MPK this year. We have sponsorship through the end of November. If you haven't signed up yet, please do so by e-mailing me at greg@beachparkschool.org to sign up for a month or a half month of sponsorship. Thank you.

 | Middle School learns the equipment at the YMCA |
This week was great!
This week Middle School went to the YMCA and learned how to use the equipment there. We will be going there for PE and working out, swimming, playing racquetball and taking fitness classes.
We also have started learning about Southern Europe and Oceania. This week we had a quiz in spelling, Wordly Wise, Earth Science, Latin / Greek Roots and a Math test on negatives.

On Tuesday, Middle School went to Hubert Park with the 6th graders from Upper Elementary to work on making Renaissance masks for art. (See Avery at right)
On Thursday the whole school went to the family picnic; we had a great time. And lastly, on Friday the Middle School went with Upper Elementary to the pool at Loretta Ingraham Park.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Rhymes and rounds were the core of this week's lessons. Students enjoyed keeping the beat with the different rhymes as well as with the short poems we recited.
Our main review was about farm animals. We spiced this lesson with a game and song about a farmer. Classroom objects and family members were also part of our weekly vocabulary.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We continue our quest for reading in Spanish. We added some more letters and their sounds. We practiced them in a dictation but mostly in Conversational Spanish. The words "who?", "what?", "when?", "where?" and "how many?" had a new dimension as they became key words for dialogues in oral and written format.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: We covered two main topics "Food and Drinks" and "Descriptions of Three Families". The first is about asking and answering questions about favorite foods and types of drinks. The latter is about family portraits by famous painters Goya, Picasso and Botero. It was very interesting to see how students used their words to "paint" yet another three different pictures. They then talked about the different techniques used by the artists to convey their message about the

social-economic levels of the three families. They also illustrated a portrait of a family and talked about it in Spanish.
TRIVIA FACT: "Parque del Retiro" in Madrid is the most popular green space in the city. There is a boating lake in the middle of the park surrounded by well manicured grounds and flanked by stone columns and an equestrian statue. Locals flock to this park during all seasons and days of the week but Sundays are a popular day for Spanish families to enjoy their urban retreat.

Family Picnic
A fantastic time of visiting, eating and playing was enjoyed by everyone at the Family Picnic yesterday. Thanks to all who attended, brought food, helped set up, helped clean up and supervised the children on the playground. Special thanks to Tacy Troncoso for the photos!
