Ms. Denise's class is getting ready to start working in the garden. This week the children had lessons on the properties of land, air, water and fire. We talked about how we need these resources to live and we went out for a walk to observe them in nature.
In Spanish we are learning the names of basic shapes; circulo, quadrato, y triangulo. In art we are experimenting with secondary colors.
Special thanks to Beverly Addison (Macy's mom) for making the beautiful mats and napkins for Ms. Denise's snack table.

Nadia washing hands
|
Ms. Lisa's class focused on 'care of self' lessons. These included the correct way to blow your nose, wash your hands and zip up a zipper. We learned a new handwashing song to encourage cleanliness in our classroom and our lives. We are amazed at the growing independence of the children in the classroom.
Our classroom worked like a small community with each child completing their classroom job. Some of the jobs include filling the water pitcher, being a botanist (watering our plants), being a messenger and a time keeper.
Please encourage your child's independence at home and know they are capable of more than we think.

I hope you all had a restful Labor Day! We have been busy here in Lower Elementary. We did more work with fractions and geometry. In grammar, the children learned about articles and how they help nouns.
The 3rd graders are teaming up with the 6th graders to give us a special presentation of the Coming of the Universe. They are excited to give the presentation next week!
Art will start this next week on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The children will have art every Wednesday from 2-3. A parent volunteer is needed to walk with the children and teacher, so if you can help please let us know. Thank you in advance!
Third graders will be starting Wordly Wise next week to help them build their vocabulary. We have ordered a new spelling program that will be implemented soon. Anyone who would like to come in and see it is more than welcome. Just let me know so we can schedule a time.
We are also getting ready for the upcoming cultural day in October. The children are in the planning stages and are getting very excited! Make your plans to attend on Friday, October 24!

This week students continue their weekly math, geometry, language and writing works. In addition, we introduced our cultural topic for the fall festival. This fall we are studying two continents, Europe and Oceania. Students discussed the fundamental needs of humans and came up with many wonderful ideas for their projects.
We are also gearing up for our presentation of the first great lesson, The Coming of the Universe. The 6th and 3rd grade students are presenting for the Upper and Lower Elementary students. Following this presentation, we will be working on our Timeline of Life play, which the Upper Elementary will present to the Lower Elementary. Students are also completing their projects on one 'Period' from the Timeline of Life lesson from the first week of school.
This week students will be working on the 3x tables. Please help support their memorization of the math facts at home with fun fact games. There are many resourses online. Here are a few: Multiplication.com , MathIsFun.com (interactive on-line quiz), Educationworld.com and FunBrain.com
**We are also quickly approaching our trip to Cedarkirk, September 25-26. All the kids are very excited. We will be staying the night, having a night hike and campfire, tree climbing and canoeing. Please, if you have not already filled out the waiver for your child and paid for the trip, do so at this time.
Finally, as you are aware, we now have a new class pet, a Ball (Royal) Python. His name is the Mississippi Pineapple King. The MPK, as some kids call him, needs to eat and be taken care of. We are asking families to sponsor MPK for either one month or two weeks during the year and over the summer. For September, I am sponsoring MPK. It is about $12.00 a month. We are creating a list of MPK's needs. Please contact me directly at greg@beachparkschool.org to sign up for a month or half month of sponsorship. Thank you.

We had much to do this week. Tuesday morning we had our first Wordly Wise test. In Algebra, we went over the test that we had last week and did corrections. We had a lesson on Tuesday about the Fundamental Needs of Humans. We also picked our countries in Europe that we will individually learn about for our first Cultural Day, and discussed ideas about how to present them.
Wednesday we had a Latin vocabulary test in the morning. Our Mentor Managers, Pamela and Avery, helped in LE and in Ms. Lisa's class. In Earth Science we went over our homework and talked about minerals.
Thursday we turned in are Wordy Wise and did our corrections. We are continuing to read The Story of the World and The Maze Runner in class.
Friday we had a spelling test on homophones e,f,g. Then we had Reading-Writing Workshop with the 6th graders and went over homework which was on tone and character. We are starting art at Hubert Craft Studio next week with the sixth graders.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We took advantage of the Montessori materials to review some basic geometric shapes in Spanish. A short story was read to the class and the illustrations in it emphasized triangles, squares, circles, and rectangles among others. We also made our own song incorporating shapes and movements; we had a jumping triangle, a rectangle charged with electricity, a dancing circle, and a bouncing square. This was a fun activity that we all enjoyed thoroughly.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: "Household Items" was the core of this week's vocabulary. We practiced our list of 20 words by reading them aloud and via word search in the written form. We are in the process of learning how to read Spanish by combining different words and paying close attention to their sounds. This group is participating enthusiastically.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Dialogues galore was the focus for our lessons this week. The girls decided to choose "Pets" as their dialogue topic and the boys opted for "Sports" and "Television". I am very pleased with their cooperation and dedication to the Spanish lessons. We are using a textbook; Paso a Paso #1 and #2 for cultural notes and reading.
TRIVIA FACT: The Museum of Italian Art in Peru was a gift to this South American country donated by the Italian community in Peru to commemorate the country's 100th anniversary of separation from Spain.
One unique feature of this museum is its offering of guided visits for the blind. This service allows the blind patrons to wear special gloves and touch the marble and bronze statues to appreciate the beauty of the works.

Garden Work Day
Calling all gardeners and those who are handy with carpentry, too! There will be a work day in the school garden on Saturday, September 13 starting at 8:30 am.
Parent Beverly Addison is heading up the garden this year and would like to start by cleaning up the garden area, cleaning out the planting beds and building the beds higher. That's where those with carpentry skills are needed.
The garden could also use some soil. If you would like to donate a bag or two, it would be a valuable contribution. Preference is for organic manure or mushroom compost, both available at Lowe's.
All garden contributions and help will be appreciated!
Piano Lessons with Ms. Misty
Ms. Misty is offering to teach private piano lessons after school at Beach Park. The 30 minute lessons will be $20 per lesson. If you are interested contact Ms. Misty by email.
PTA Report
BPS Activities for the year were the topics at the PTA meeting on Thursday evening. Those in attendance signed up for the activities they where they would like to help, such as set-up and clean-up for Cultural Celebrations, the Family Picnic and Art Show. The annual Spring Auction has many volunteer opportunities.
If you did not attend the meeting and would like to sign up to help with any activities, you are welcome to stop in the office at any time. The sign-up sheets are on the front desk. You will be contacted in advance of the event(s) you choose when it is time to help.
