This week our classrooms are buzzing with excitement as the children prepare for Sunday's art show. Many of this year's masterpieces have been inspired by springtime and the garden. It is always fun to watch Montessori children make connections between art and science as they combine their creative skills and knowledge.
Don't miss their day to show off all their hard work! See you there!

Old Florida Museum in St Augustine
|
This week the 3rd years shared all of their memories of St. Augustine with the class. We had some souvenirs from the trip and the children discussed them with their peers. We had a wonderful trip!
The 3rd years are now working on an essay of their trip. They just finished their first draft. After their second and final drafts, all of the essays will be compiled in a scrapbook for our 3rd years. We really cannot believe that our 3rd years will be graduating and moving on to 4th grade.
We also continued our study of Ancient Greece. We learned about the Greek alphabet. The Greek alphabet has 24 letters; each letter stands for a single sound. The alphabet emerged around 800 B.C. It was adapted by the Greeks from the Phoenician alphabet.
We read the book, The Librarian who Measured the Earth by Kathryn Lasky. This is a fabulous book that discusses the life of Eratosthenes. He was a Greek mathematician who endeavored to measure the circumference of the earth using camels, plumb lines and measuring the angles of shadows.
This week was our last trip to the Hubert Art Studio for the year. Our class has enjoyed their walking trips through the neighborhood to the Studio for weekly lessons using many types of media. You will see select works on Sunday at the annual BPS Art Show. Hope to see everyone there!

3rd Year Students visit Upper Elem and have a lesson on the 9 proof from Ms. Ann
|
Another busy week has gone by. We've been working hard on all subjects. Our last Art class was Monday and all the students made cards for Ms. Phyllis and Ms. Vanessa. The Art Show is Sunday and each student has three particular pieces to exhibit. We hope to see everyone there.
We also had visitors from the Ukraine this week. Ms. Yulia is a student in Montessori training for the next 2 ½ years. Her husband and she have a Montessori school and are planning to open the elementary section soon. Ms. Yulia brought us some lovely items from Ukraine to keep for display.
Students have continued to practice the recorder and are getting prepared for the trip to hear the Florida Orchestra. Along with many other students from the county, they will be able to play along to some of the selections played by the orchestra.

Middle School
|
This week, the middle school started our Career Unit. We chose jobs and learned all about them.
On Monday, we went to Hubert Park for the last art lesson. On Tuesday, we had Physical Science, while we continued to learn about the most important inventions and their inventors. On Wednesday, we had a yearbook meeting and had a lesson about how to have a job interview. This week we also started a new book called "Coraline".
The school is also preparing for the Art Show, on Sunday, May 4th.
The past week has been very packed.

Spanish
|
LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had an extensive review on family members that concluded with a song and related worksheet. We also practiced household objects and wild animals via flash cards. To welcome the month of May, we introduced a song about flowers and named items in the classroom that have a beginning "M" in Spanish.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: Conversational Spanish took most of our time this week. The use of "who?", "what?", "when?", and "where?" in interrogative sentences sparked interest in the students. Each one of them had to answer these questions based on different topics, e.g. beach, mountain, forest or they could use their own scenarios. The fluency of the Spanish language in this group is a reality!
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Talk about "busy bees" and "working ants"! We had a review on the present tense

of the verb "tener" (to have), written and oral exercises on contractions, correct use of definite and indefinite articles, nouns and adjectives. Most of the eight graders signed up for Spanish 2 in high school next year and I am making sure that they have the tools they need to succeed!
TRIVIA FACTS ABOUT BOLIVIA:
1.) The "Salar Uyuni" or salt beds in Bolivia contain the largest deposit of salt on the planet.
2.) Bolivia is also home to one of the best butterfly sanctuaries in the world.

Link Up, The Orchestra Sings
Next week, the third through sixth grade students participate in an innovative program with the Florida Orchestra at the Straz Center on Wednesday morning. The program, entitled Link Up, The Orchestra Sings, has the children performing with the orchestra on their own recorders during part of the program.
Thanks to Ms. Teresa, our music teacher, the children received recorders and have learned their songs and been practicing for several weeks. They will perform from their seats in the audience with children from other schools.
Summer Camp
Beach Park's half day summer camp for children ages three through those entering first grade starts on June 9th. Camp themes and more information can be found on the registration form.
Scholastic Books
We will have one more order for Scholastic Books before the end of the year. A special thanks goes to Maria Appel, mom of Sam and school librarian, for managing the Scholastic Books program this year for the school. Participation has been active all year long and students are always happy to have their orders delivered. What better way to promote reading! Watch for notice of the last ordering opportunity in the coming weeks.
