This week we are celebrating Earth Day with beautiful artwork and lots of fun in the garden.
We talked about all of the essential resourses we get from the earth and how to take care of them using three r's; reduce, reuse, and recycle. The children shared stories and drawings of their favorite outdoor places. Taking their dogs for walks and going to parks were some of the most popular. They asked some most interesting questions about how the earth gets energy from the sun and even about how the earth was created!
We also enjoyed planting tomatoes and flower seeds in the warm sunshine.
Don't forget to mark you calendars for our annual art show on Sunday, May 4th, the children are very excited to share their creations.
Thanks to Beverly Addison for donating the cherry tomato plants.

This week we delved into Ancient Greece. We made a paper model of the Parthenon. We discussed all aspects of this awesome structure. The Parthenon was 60 feet tall. It had 46 Doric columns. On the top were painted carvings.
The Parthenon was a great marble temple. It was specifically built for the Greek goddess Athena. Inside the temple was a statue of Athena. She was the goddess of wisdom and war. The statue was 40 feet tall. It was made of gold and ivory.
We also learned about the Greek theater. Greek actors performed both comedies and tragedies in large open-air theaters. Actors wore masks to represent different characters and their emotions. The actors were all males. They played both the male and female roles. Many actors wore two masks at one time so as to enable them to change character and emotions quickly. Each child made two Greek masks. One was a happy face and the other was a sad face. (Photo above: Lucas shows his sad mask)
The third years and their parents traveled to St. Augustine Friday morning for their first overnight. We are visiting many historic sights including the OldFloridaMuseum, the Pirate and TreasureMuseum, the Castillo de San Marcos and more. It is such a great educational experience, as well as being fun

This has been a busy week. In addition to our regular work, we've done some beautiful paintings on canvas for the Art Show. Next week, we'll apply some of the knowledge we have about Geometry to create string art. Please plan to attend the Art Show as it will be fabulous!
We are getting ready to read the last few chapters of "The Story of the World" and to review all we've learned from this volume on Ancient Times.
The third year students came into the class this week and had a lesson from Ms. Ann on lines. We used the stick box to learn vocabulary related to lines. We also worked with the Golden Mat and bead bars to practice reading numerals to the millions. Next week, we will do even more work together!

This week we had a field trip on Tuesday. We went to the TampaInternationalAirport; we learned about the firefighters who live at the airport and are there 24 hours a day. They also showed us where the planes are kept and where they fix them.
On Wednesday Ms.Tacy took the whole School picture for this year's yearbook. The 7th graders started their Pre-Algebra Final test. We had Physical Science on Tuesday and Thursday. We are studying inventions and who invented them.
We ended our Creative writing unit with the 6th graders on Monday with everyone sharing the stories they wrote. We also started our career unit, where we will be researching a career and what we need to do to get there.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Our weekly reading transported us to a far away place where many strange things happened at night. The moon acted as a fairy godmother granting wishes galore to the farm animals. Each night, animals traded their furs for bushy tails, horns for wings, beaks for snouts and paws for manes, to name some of the changes that took place! We thoroughly enjoyed this unusual, fun and funny story. Our students were divided into groups of felines, canines, sea creatures, and miscellaneous animals to create our own version of the book. We had a blast!
UPPER ELEMENTARY: To honor the birthday of Mother Earth, we worked on a class assignment titled, "The Colors of the Earth". This written exercise was a fine way to write complete sentences in Spanish. It was also a way to review colors and many words related to nature. Just for fun, we learned how to say "EARTH" in 8 different languages!
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Writing creative paragraphs was our goal this week. By so doing, we practiced and reviewed our Spanish grammar and vocabulary. We also had individual readings and opportunities to improve our Spanish conversational skills.
TRIVIA FACTS ABOUT SPAIN: The name "ESPANA" comes from the word "ISPANIA", which means land of the rabbits, and the name "MADRID" from the Arabic, "MAGERIT" which means place of many streams.
