Primary

What an exciting week! The children have been observing the changes in their lima bean sprouts as they shed their seed coats and the roots, stem and leaves emerge.  We were surprised to see how fast a tiny plant can grow from a seed.

This is a special time of year in the classrooms as many of the chidren are using their combined skills to create projects and explore their interests.  They have been making impressive geographic maps, biome books, insect life cycle books and insect life cycle charts.

Thank you, parents, for coming for parent-teacher conferences.  It is a pleasure to sit with you and discuss the progress and growth of each of your children.  (Left: Wyatt S at work)

Lower Elementary

This week flew by!  We started our with a fabulous two hour tour of the Tampa International Airport.  It was really educational and fun.  We spilt the group in half.  The first group started out in an airport shuttle bus.  We toured the acres around the airport and even got to see several planes and jets fly directly over the shuttle from the runway.  We also got an exclusive tour of the Airport Fire Station.  This is a state of the art station and it is quite swanky.  We saw a short film describing a day in the life of a female firefighter.  Then we saw where the fire fighters slept, worked out and cooked and ate together.  We even got to take a peek in their movie room!

The other part of the tour was a walking tour of the airport.  I have to say that I have been to the airport hundreds of times and I never even noticed some of the cool things that our guide showed us!  The children even got to watch the conveyor belt in action.  They each took off one of their shoes and placed it on the belt.  (See photo above.) They then watched them fade away into the airport vortex.  They then waited for their shoes to return.  Guess what?  Two shoes were missing!  Just like luggage!  The children then filed a claim with our guide for their lost baggage!  Don't worry...the missing shoes were found.

We continue our studies of Ancient Greece.  We learned all about Greek farming and food.  Wine and olive oil were a vital part of this culture.  An Ancient Greek breakfast often consisted of a lump of bread soaked in wine. Lunch might consist of bread with a piece of cheese or some olives and figs.  The main meal was dinner.  This was usually barley porridge with some vegetables.

Upper Elementary

This week students began working on another clay project in Art class. In addition, we began doing some paintings for display at this year's Art Show. Please be sure to attend the event to see some of your child's beautiful art work.

Students began working on a compare and contrast essay on two Greek Mythological characters of their choice. Each student used a Venn diagram to organize the differences and similarities of the two characters.

We just got a new box of fraction materials going up to the 24ths! This is sure to be of more help as students work with the four operations of math using the fraction material.

Middle School

This week in middle school we had the 6th graders come to our class, and we did a creative writing unit. We are writing short stories with the sixth graders that are due this Monday.

We had our usual Physical Science class on Tuesday and Thursday.  This week we finished  the book we were reading 1984. The eight graders had a math test on Tuesday and we are all looking forward to a three day weekend.

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY: This week found us reviewing opposites in Spanish. We completed a worksheet and also used a dry board to sketch opposite words. This exercise was very enjoyable for the students. We also practiced some verbs via charade and conversational Spanish was used daily.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: From "KOKUYO", our chapter book we read the story of "The Enchanted Tree".  We then "branched" out into a Botany lesson as we talked about trees, plants and reeds. The parts of a tree were drawn and labeled in Spanish. Each student illustrated their own "enchanted tree" and described it using at least five adjectives; it was another way to enrich our vocabulary. This chapter doubled as our Conversational topic for the week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: We are advancing in our conjugation of verbs in different tenses. Students are really making an effort to master such an important part of the grammar and I am very pleased with the results. We also wrote an A to Z list of Clothing and Accessories. This vocabulary was used in written and oral sentences.
