Pulling weeds and planting seeds! This week the children have been busy in the garden, preparing the soil and planting vegetables and flowers. We learned about how to identify weeds and pull them up from the roots. We are also planting seeds and observing the changes that take place as they grow. It is amazing to explore how an oak tree grows from an acorn and how many of our resources (food, clothing and shelter) come from plants.

Thank you, Amy H. for the tomato, strawberry, peppermint and cucumber plants and Garrett S., for the garlic-chives plant, and Lukas for the basil seedlings.  These are a great start for our garden! We can still use some flowering plants and other vegetables. We are doing flower arranging in our class and it would be great to pick them from our own garden.

Thank you, Laurie C, Addison's mom, for sharing your time with us and reading The Very Itchy Bear, by Nick Bland and I Need My Monster, by, Amanda Noll.

What a fine auction!  Ginger and Beary found their forever homes at the Auction and parents bid generously on the class projects.  It was rewarding to see so many families enjoying themselves at our annual party.

WOW!  What a beautiful auction we had on Saturday evening.  We wish to thank all of you who helped make it so fabulous.  We love our BPS families.

This week we delved right into our study of Ancient Greece.  The children discovered that Ancient Greece was a very important civilization.  Many of their customs and ideas have carried over into modern society.  The first Olympics were in Greece.  Greek -style columns are sill seen on buildings today.  The ancient Greeks also gave us many ideas about Government and how to run it.

We have lots of exciting field trips coming up.  On April 15th we will be heading out to the Tampa Airport for a behind the scenes tour.  We still need drivers and chaperones.  On April 25th, the 3rd graders will meet in St. Augustine for their first overnight.  Then on April 29th, 3rd grade will head over to the Florida State Fairgrounds for Ag Venture.  This is an awesome introduction for the students to the agricultural side of Florida.  We need drivers and chaperones for this as well.

Upper Elementary

Another busy week has passed. Students had new lessons in Math, Geometry and Language Arts this week. Students continued to read the book of Greek myths. On Friday we had a lesson on comparing and contrasting two characters. We used two hula hoops to create a Venn diagram, and then students contributed facts and placing them in the correct place on the diagram. Next week, they will choose two characters from Greek mythology, create their own Venn diagram, and then use that information to write an essay.

Our students, along with the third grade are busy practicing recorder for a concert on May 9th.  They practice in groups of three students. (See photo of Trez, Gabe and Elena above. )The concert will be at the Performing Arts Center along with many students from other schools.

In Art, students have been working on a Monster of their own design using clay. First, they created a pinch pot and then turned that into the mouth of a Monster. They added details. After a first firing, students glazed their pottery. We'll see next Monday how things turned out! At the Art show on May 5th, students will display a piece of their pottery, a painting and another piece of art of their choice. It is an event you do not want to miss!

Middle School

This week Middle School is happy that we finished all of our art projects for the auction.  We appreciate all the parents attending the auction and bidding on our projects.

We are back to our regular routine. We have been having frequent yearbook meetings in order to finish it up for May. Monday we did not have our Spanish lesson but we did spend our usual Hubert Park and Art Studio visit. Tuesday we returned to our Physical Science class and we learned all about the history of how television came to be. Wednesday we had our yearbook meeting and a Greek Vocabulary test and Friday we will had a Worldly Wise test on our new 8th and 9th grade words. We would also like to inform you that the 7th graders have finished their Pre-Algebra textbooks and are having their finals next week.

Seora Felisa in Middle School Spanish
LOWER ELEMENTARY: It was a fun week with an interesting reading about a child describing his Latino "barrio" with an A to Z vocabulary.

Some of the words he used were graffiti for the letter "G", murals for the letter "M", lilacs for the letter "L", domino for the letter "D", bottles for "B" and so on.  The result was a colorful and realistic representation of his own "barrio".  We also reviewed the Spanish alphabet and added some words to our rhyming repertoire.

A worksheet was completed on beginning sounds in Spanish.

UPPER ELEMENTARY:  We read another passage of our chapter book. This time, we introduced "Manare"; the first human, of unknown origin, but probably born from the mystery of the night. We followed Manare's lifecycle as he covers his basic needs of shelter, food, defense, companionship and emerges as a real survivor.  We also illustrated Manare's  accomplishments as we read the chapter. This was a new way to capture the essence of a story.  We also continue practicing conversational Spanish

MIDDLE SCHOOL:  We pursue the quest of conjugating verbs; this week our efforts are dedicated to the "ER" verbs in the principal tenses of present, past and future.  Numerous written and oral exercises, homework, and class assignments were used to implement this crucial part of the Spanish grammar.

TRIVIA FACTS:  1.) Nicaragua is home to the only "Dual Volcano" in the world.  The volcano is in a small mountain range and is fed underground by two separate magma flows.  2.) Ruins of Leon Viejo, also in Nicaragua make part of the oldest city in all of Central America that is still in use as it was 1500 years ago!
