We are having a great week back from Spring Break! The children are excited to share what they did and get back to their friends and routine.

We talked about St. Patrick's Day and the traditions of wearing green which represents the "Emerald Island" and the beautiful green countryside of Ireland. We read several legends about St. Patrick and the children made flags of Ireland, shamrocks, rainbows and harps.

We are welcoming spring this week with lessons on the seasons and springtime holidays. This is a great time to refresh our botany lessons on flower, seed, and tree, and get ready for planting in the garden.

Thank you, Ms. Peggy, Macy's grandmother, for reading The Little Engine that Could and sharing time with us.

Lower Elementary
Steven's poster of leaf types

This week, the children returned from Spring Break well-rested and ready to be back in class.

Our studies of African American history continued with discussion of the Civil Rights Movement.  We read a book about the four African American university students who sat down and asked for service at a Greensboro, North Carolina, lunch counter at Woolworths in 1960.  They were not served because the lunch counter was for 'whites only.' Their brave act inspired others in the nationwide struggle for equality.

This story was told by the 8 year old sister of one of the students.  She told what happened in her own words as she saw her brother and her sister continue to work for equal rights.  Our students were surprised at how African Americans were treated in that time.

We have talked and read about Booker T. Washington, the founder of the Tuskegee Institute.  He was a famous African American leader inportant in improving and providing education for African Americans.  Students sketched about Booker T. Washington in their sketchbooks.

We are working on our class project for the Spring Auction.  We can't wait for parents to see it!

Upper Elementary
Ancient Greeks 'fell ill' during their simulation

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope everyone had an enjoyable week off. We've begun a unit on Greek Mythology and have read the stories of the Titans and of Cronus. Each student chose a section of the story and drew a picture, then wrote that portion in their words.

On Thursday, we began a simulation of Ancient Greece. Each student chose a Greek name and Ms. Ann gave each a "Distinct" personality to assume during the one hour period after lunch. On Thursday, students made signs to place around the classroom for Mount Olympus, Delphi, The Agora, The Forum, The Parthenon, and Athens Harbor.

On Friday, during the simulation, each student wrote about two constellations and also drew a picture placing the stars in the correct position. We will be combining all the work on Ancient Greece and Mythology at the end of the unit.

We're doing some wonderful projects for the Spring Auction. Also, Ms. Ann is compiling some baskets from suggestions the children made! Some basket themes are Minecraft, Naruto, The Hunger Games and Marvel Superheroes. The baskets have books and many items relating to the theme. These are sure to be hot items at the auction.

Middle School

This week in Middle School we continued work on yearbook.  Ms. Tacy took class photos, individual retakes, and the 8th grade photo shoot this week as well.  We had our Wordly Wise final and took another Greek root quiz.  In math, both classes took another chapter quiz too.  Next week we will be working on our Auction projects.

Spanish

Welcome back every body and welcome Spring!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: This week found us working on rhymes, songs and rounds. Our new Spanish song is "Conejo Blanco" about a white bunny holding and hiding a present for us behind his back. We all liked the lyrics and simple tune, just in time for spring. We also reviewed words related to the new season.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: To honor and welcome spring we learned that the rainbow is composed of Primary and Secondary colors. We also learned about the shape of the rainbow and the meaning of its colors and the reason why we only get to see half of it. Now we know about double, triple, and inverted rainbows. We concluded our lessons with a beautiful legend about the colors of the rainbow and how they came to be together, ask your child about it.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Flowers and more flowers was our topic for this week, we wrote the name of 15 flowers in Spanish with their meaning according to their color and the occasion they were given. Each student researched about one flower and wrote short composition about it with the information they gathered via computer and later translated into Spanish.  It was exciting to see their compositions blossom!

TRIVIA FACT: Mexico City is the capital with most museums in the world. It is the second most populated city (after Tokyo), the city with the most taxis and wonder of wonders; the most contaminated!
