It's been a cold week for all of our Florida children.

Our classes have continued to enjoy our winter themed works. We have been push pinning snowflakes, counting snowflakes, cutting snowflakes, tracing snowflakes, and more. We have been learning about arctic animals and the parts of the snowman as well. In the morning and after play time we have been focusing on learning to hang our coats independently and care of self. Remember to label coats and all belongings with your child's name!

This week we have introduced our new cultural study unit. We are going to be learning about Australia and Aboriginal culture. The children have been really curious about these indigenous people and the way they live. They are also very excited to learn more about the interesting animals of Australia. We look forward to sharing more about our unit as we progress.

Lower Elementary

Brrrrr!  It's cold outside!  But that doesn't keep the Lower Elementary down.  We have been busy, busy, busy.  The children started their semester with yoga on Tuesday.  Miss Shana will being working with the children every week for six weeks.  We will be focusing on breathing and relaxing and learning how to calm ourselves.  We will also continue our studies at the Hubert Art Center one day a week.

This week we focused on Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.  We read the book, The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Walter Dean Myers.    The children are always amazed that not long ago, blacks and whites could not even sit in the same section of a bus.  We discussed segregation and how that would feel today.   The children had great questions and observations to share.  It always makes me so proud when I hear our young students talk about equality and justice.  They have a far greater understanding of the subject than one might think.

Our studies of Ancient China lead us to talk about the Sons of Heaven.  The Ancient Chinese people called their emperors "Sons of Heaven," because they believed the leaders were chosen by the gods.  Emperors had many wives and many children.  When an emperor died, his eldest son usually became emperor.  Some Chinese dynasties lasted for hundreds of years.  Emperors were China's supreme political, military and religious leaders.

Upper Elementary
Upper Elementary & Middle School have found a new favorite game - crossover dodge ball

We continued reading "The Story of the World" and learned about Phoenician traders, the first Library of Nineveh, Nebuchadnezzar and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Next, we'll begin the study of Ancient Greece by learning about life in early Crete.

We have begun studying Aesop's fables and learning to write a fable with a moral. Some students have also been writing Haiku poetry.

On Tuesday, we began a Yoga class for PE. The students used their bodies to create various animal dances. Then, they had a "Free dance" period followed by a calming and relaxing ending to the class.

Middle School

This week Middle School had their first Fed Ex day on Friday. Fed Ex is a three hour period in which you start and complete a project of your choice.

Middle school started their next P.E. unit, yoga, which is very exciting. The 8th graders had a math test on Thursday, and all of Middle School had a year book meeting, where we worked on the year book write ups.

This week has been full of new and exciting events.

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY: It was a week of emotions related vocabulary and also weather expressions.  We acted out how to show emotions such as, "I am sad, happy, tired, sleepy" etc. We also practiced and demonstrated how to be cold, hot, wet, snowed on, and being in a tornado, hurricane and cyclone! It was a super active week and we wrapped up with drawings about the lessons.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: Our unit for the week was Sports. We listed 20 different sports in Spanish, used the vocabulary in complete oral sentences and wrote a few words about our favorite sport and why we like it. As a class project each student designed and cut a jersey out of cardboard to represent his or her team and a logo with a short description. I know Super Bowl is a week away!

MIDDLE SCHOOL:  We literally had a "fantastic" week! Our topic was fairy tales, their elements, key words and characters. Some of the stories we explored were "The Little Mermaid", "Sleeping Beauty", "Snow White", "Puss and Boots", "Little Red Riding Hood", and "Aladdin", among others. Each student then wrote an original short fairy tale and shared it with the rest of the class. What a way to l earn a foreign language!

TRIVIA FACT: Boa constrictors have no fangs, no venom, but are very effective killers. Suspended from branches in Central and South American forests, they ambush unsuspecting animals that become their prey.  Boa constrictors give birth to live young that are fully developed and ready to go within minutes.
