Lowry Park Zoo's box turtle
|
We had a very special learning week!
On Wednesday, Lowry Park Zoo came to visit and share some amazing animals and information. The children learned about the marine toad, box turtle, monkey tailed lizard, screech owl, rabbit and chinchilla! Did you know that a chinchilla's fur detaches from its body when it is grabbed by a predator? (We didn't grab.)
The children got to watch the chinchilla take a dust bath in the sand and feel the difference between a rabbit and a turtle. This was a great tie-in to our ongoing unit on vertebrates and the children really enjoyed it.
Ms. Laura, Mallory's mom, came and read to Ms. Denise's class today and Ms. Jeannie, Emily's mom, read today to Ms. Katrina's class. From Ms. Laura, the children heard "Animals In Winter" by Henrietta Bancroft and Richard Van Gelder. Ms. Jeannie read the timely "Pirates Don't Change Diapers" by David Shannon and Melissa Long since Children's Gasparilla is this weekend. Thank you, Ms. Laura and Ms. Jeannie!

This week we saw a fabulous play, Charlotte's Web. The play is based on E.B. White's classic book that first appeared in 1952. The children loved it. It was at the Palladium Theater in downtown St. Petersburg. We are followed up with a viewing of the movie, Charlotte's Web this afternoon. Our vocabulary/spelling words for next week will include words that came directly from the book. They include runt, slops, radiant, gander, goslings, famous and loyal, just to name a few!

Leyton, Nicolas & Gideon are making a really big map of China
|
In our Ancient China studies this week, we discussed education in China. Education became rather important during the Han Dynasty, around 100B.C.. The Emperor Wudi agreed with Confucius that the key to good government depended on education. The Emperor Wudi started a system of public schools for boys only. Of course, our students could not believe that girls were not allowed.
This week we started our Ancient China art studies at the Hubert Art Studio. Due to the size of our class, half of the students go on Tuesdays and the other half on Wednesdays. And let me tell you, it was awesome! Ms. Phyillis has quite the program for us. Each child made a clay dragon. After they are fired in the kiln, they will then paint them. Be sure to check out all of our art projects on Cultural Day in March!

This week we read about Ancient Africa and the Anasi myths. "The Story of the World" makes history interesting and enjoyable and we all look forward to hearing more every day. We'll soon be ready to read about Ancient Greece. The study of Greece and Greek Mythology will be the focus of Social Studies and Science for January and February. Our Spring Cultural Day will feature work and art done for this Unit.
We finished reading "The Westing Game" on Friday. The story was humorous and mysterious! On Friday afternoon we watched the movie. Next Tuesday, we'll write a comparison of the book and movie.

This week Middle School started working on the Ancient India unit. They had a guest speaker, Anu, come and talk about Hinduism and India. We also started preparing for Fed-Ex day by writing proposals, and have gotten a lesson on social skill presentation. At Hubert Park we completed our pinch pots, and in music we started a Bollywood dance and worked on the Orff instruments.
This week as been fun! by Julia Parrino
