As the year winds down, it is awesome to see how much the children have grown and progressed. They continue to repeat familiar lessons and challenge themselves at the same time. It is very rewarding as teachers to watch their love of learning and independence grow.
Some of the children had fun making fossils out of coffee grounds, flour and salt. It was a fun and messy project with a lot of hands on experience!
We celebrated Derek Johnson's summer birthday in Ms. Denise and Ms. Karen's class on Friday. Derek will be 4 on June 19th. Thank you for the yummy cupcakes.
The children are excited about their gifts for their moms and anxious to give them to you Monday morning at the Mother's Day breakfast. Please give yourself extra time at drop-off to come in and have coffee and Danish, between 8:00-9:00am, with your child/ren: they are really looking forward to it! Happy Mother's Day to all!

This week we are wrapping up our study of insects. We saved the most exciting for last. Miss Kristen ordered a Chinese praying mantis egg case. That's right! We truly outdid ourselves!
We had 100 praying mantises that hatched. Holy smokes, it was very exciting! After hatching, the baby mantises, also known as nymphs, emerge from the egg case and float to the ground. They resemble large mosquitoes. They shed their skin frequently and vary in color.

Praying mantises have an enormous appetite and never seem to get enough to eat. In their young stages, they eat aphids. That is what we are feeding them in the Lower Elementary.
The children have been learning the parts of a praying mantis. Did you know that a praying mantis has one ear? Yes, it's true. Their ear is located in their thorax.
On Monday we traveled to the Mahaffey Theater. We saw the play, Huck and Tom and the Mighty Mississippi. It was awesome! For many of the children it was their first introduction to dialects and Mark Twain. Thank you to all of the chaperones.
We hope all moms will plan to come to the Mother's Day Breakfast on Monday. You can park and bring your child with you to the patio for juice, coffee and Danish. And, there is a special treat for each mom to be given to you by your child. See you on Monday morning!

We began a trial system of recording work this week. Students recorded the name of each activity or lesson, the time they began and the time they ended. After the work was checked, the teacher signed off. The idea behind this system is for children to become more aware of time management and to develop responsibility for their time. So far, it's working well and most students seem to enjoy keeping track in this manner.
We also continued the study of human anatomy. Each group is developing something to add to the Website (developed for the project by Drew Falkowitz,) an advertisement "selling" the system, a creative project such as a model or movie to demonstrate in a final presentation. We'll be focusing on this project heavily next week.
We look forward to seeing moms at the Mother's Day Breakfast on Monday morning. Your child will enjoy this time with you as you are honored.

This week in Middle School we worked on many different things.
We worked on our Mother's day gifts. The 7th grade worked on the math program IXL. The whole class worked on math cards. We worked on FLVS. We had a spelling test on Friday and also a Wordly Wise test on Friday. In P.E. we had the second half of the President's Challenge. Since we have our end of the year trip next week, we have been planning and finishing. The yearbook is coming along great too! We are almost done!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We read a very informative book about balloons and where they go when they fly off. The author of the story is Jamie Lee Curtis. She gave life to balloons and depicted them in every day life situations like balloons going on dates, getting married, having families, going on trips, celebrating holidays, and so on. The story was amusing, entertaining and touching. I am sure that from now on, we will think twice about popping a balloon! We completed some picture-word puzzles and the words became part of our already rich vocabulary.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: This week we went shopping for food and other items. Each student wrote a 20 item shopping list including food, fresh and canned items, dairy products, paper products, toiletries, detergents, pet food, and miscellaneous such as aspirins, stamps, stationary, flowers and gift certificates. The list also included containers such as boxes, gallons, cans, bottles, bags and dozens. We reviewed with a vast vocabulary. MIDDLE SCHOOL: This week we had numerous lessons on the practice and use of the verb "IR"(to go) in the present, past and future tenses. The assignments were written and oral. This group is progressing very well and they are very well prepared with a solid foundation of the Spanish language.
TRIVIA FACT: The national sport of the Dominican Republic is baseball. Dominicans make up a larger percentage of players in the Major league Baseball than any country outside the United States. Carlos Pena, Pedro Viola, Alberto Cabrera, and Sammy Sosa, are still active or have played in the Major Leagues.

Summer Camp
BPS is once again offering weekly summer camp sessions for children ages 3 through 6 (entering first grade).
The camp day runs from 9 am to noon and camp sessions are taught by BPS staff.
Weekly themes include Creepy Crawly Critters, Music and Movement, Puppet Theater, Animals Around the World & more.
Your child may attend any or all of the ten weekly sessions offered. The registration form is available online at the BPS website.
Teacher Appreciation
Rachelle Bedke, mom of Wyatt and Bryce and PTA Teacher Appreciation chair, wants to remind parents of the collection that is now under way for Teacher Appreciation. Thanks to the many parents who have sent in contributions and put them in the specially designed collection box that has been at the gate this week. Contributions will be used for cash gifts to the teaching staff of the school.
A lunch for all school staff is already planned and arranged so no further assistance is needed with the lunch. Parents are encouraged to supplement the group gift effort with individual thank you notes or other expressions of gratitude during the last week of school.
Fun at Our Neighborhood Public Playground
A Day of Play is planned for Saturday, May 18th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Hubert Playground at the corner of North Hubert and Fig Streets, two blocks north of Beach Park School. There will be 'make and take' craft activities and fun play time in the park. The City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department is holding this event. Plan to stop by and play that day.
