This week we have been putting our final touches on our art work. We are very excited to show off our pieces to you on Sunday at the Art Show!
Some of us completed our Florida symbols work and put them on poster board. Do you know what the state of Florida gem is? A moonstone.
If you have any readers at home, please return them to the class and also any library books you might have out.
Gracias, Ms. Wendy, Zeke's mom for sharing your time with us today to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Each child made a paper carantion (clavel) and we ate cochinitos (little pigs) cookies.

This week was full of variety in lower elementary!
We learned the history behind Cinco de Mayo by watching a video and reading Celebrating Cinco de Mayo by Sandi Hill. The children then drew their own sombreros in their sketch pads, while adding the Mexican flag or maracas.
We have welcomed our new class pet, the praying mantis. Right now, we have an egg that holds about 200 insects inside! We are anticipating the exciting hatching event!
One afternoon, Ms. Kristen shared about her time in Takasaki, Japan. She read a book called Yuko-Chan and the Daruma Doll by Sunny Seki, and brought in a Daruma Doll from her travels. Daruma-san was famous for saying, "If you get knocked down seven times, get up eight times." Therefore, if you roll the Daruma doll, he always stands back upright!
Most recently, we made a lemon clock to further our discussion about numbers and time. We read The Story of Clocks and Calendars by Betsy Maestro, which taught us about the history of time-telling.
The third years shared their amazing adventures in Saint Augustine, and they are working on writing about their experiences. Today, they also went on a field trip with Mr. Dick to Ag-Venture! How lucky those third years are!

Our class has been enjoying some great book reports this week. The students enjoy the opportunity to be very creative with the reports several times during the school year. One exciting book report was on the "Wizard of Oz" when Isa changed from Dorothy into the wicked witch in just seconds! Pam gathered everyone around a "Campfire" and served S'mores when she reported on "Deep and Dark and Dangerous" by Mary Downing Hahn. (See photo above in Important Dates)
The Geometry materials give the children many opportunities to explore the concepts of geometry and relationships. Many students are working on congruency, similarity and equivalence. Gabe and Avery were able to construct an open octagon using 12 right angled scalene triangles.(See photo at left)
The language arts activities are teaching vocabulary and word study. Owen enjoyed working with homophones. (See photo at right)
Solange worked with suffixes. These activities challenge the children to learn advanced vocabulary and meanings.
We look forward to Sunday's Annual Art Show on the patio. The students' work is colorful, imaginative and unique to each individual. Please come to the Art Show between 1 and 3.

Lura & Berkeley learn practical economics at Finance Park
|
This week in Middle School we worked on many things. We are on our second to last week for FLVS, so we are finishing and submitting our work.
We also worked on Finance Park because Thursday we went to the actual Finance Park in Largo. We were each given different "identities." Based on our life situations, we had to pay our bills and balance our checkbooks.
We have started working on the final refection paper for the end of the year. We had a spelling test on homophones R on Friday. We had a yearbook meeting on Wednesday, and it was very productive. It was another busy week.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: It was a fun week for us as we practiced our numbers in Spanish from 1 to 100, counting by fives and by tens. We also reviewed body parts and used vocabulary in oral sentences. Our written assignment consisted of short sentences using words beginning with "M" as we introduced the month of May.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We had a dictation and writing of complete sentences using related words, e.g., sand, seagulls, summertime. We had many topics to choose from and students were very creative. This group got inspired by the projects presented by the MIDDLE SCHOOL students and some are even writing short biographies or interesting facts about Spanish speaking countries.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: We concentrated our efforts on individual reading, diction and fluency of the Spanish language. Ma
ny oral and written exercises were used to incorporate new vocabulary and expand our knowledge of the Spanish Grammar. The letter "U" was highlighted in a paragraph where we used nouns, adjectives, and verbs with the "U" as a beginning sound.
TRIVIA FACT: The Pantanal, the largest freshwater wetlands area in the world, is spread across Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. (See map at left). Paraguay is also rich in many natural resources such as timber, iron ores, manganese and limestone.
