PreK/Kindergarten

HIlty & Ella create a pyramid of squares with bead materials

This has been a very busy, productive week. We introduced new lessons in the different areas of the classroom. In Practical Life, children enjoyed soap grating, fresh flower arrangement and wood polishing to name a few. In the Cultural area, some of the children are working on the state of Florida, learning about the different symbols, products and animals that represent our "Sunshine State". We continue to study the Florida insects and the Florida endangered species.  In the Language area some of the children were introduced to the "function of words", nouns and adjectives and some action words.

We also had lessons on naming different types of trucks, cooking utensils and parts of the car. And, we introduced the Rainforest Biomes this week, the green parrot, jaguar, lemur, macaw and emerald tree boa to name a few.

With Earth Day coming on Monday, we have been building Spanish vocabulary with words related to the earth such as tierra (earth), agua (water), sol (sun) and fuego (fire).

Lucas and Nicholas celebrated their 6th birthday on Thursday. A very happy birthday to them and thank you for the yummy treats! Felicidades, niņos!

 Lower Elementary
Leyton examines the classroom ant colony

Bees, wasps and ants, oh my!  As you may have already heard, we are heavy into insects!  Miss Kristen ordered ants and they finally arrived.  It is really awesome to see them dig their tunnels and work to make their new home.

We are continuing our study of bees.  Did you know that every bee, wasp, and ant goes through four stages in life?  First, it is an egg.  When the egg hatches, the baby-called a larva-begins feeding on food that an adult has brought in for him.  After a few weeks, the larva changes into a pupa.  By the end of this stage, the insect develops into an adult.

Did you know that honeybees are so hairy that they even have hairs on their eyes.  Also, a honeybee queen may lay more than 2,000 eggs every day!

Third year students started an online math program this week that allows them to practice their math skills and reinforce lessons they have learned.

Our annual 3rd grade trip to St. Augustine is coming up fast.  We will meet in St. Augustine on Friday, April 26th.  The children are looking forward to a fun-filled weekend.  Please see Jan or Ms Patti if you have any questions.

Upper Elementary

Another week has flown by. The sixth year students went to Nature's Classroom with the Middle School on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. They told us great stories of digging in the mud of the Hillsborough River and finding insects and other creatures! On Wednesday the fourth and fifth year students went to the Dali Museum. Thanks to Ashlie Hatton for arranging the trip and to Kori, Elena's mom and Ms. April for driving.

On Thursday, the fourth and fifth years had a special treat as we went to the park for lunch and play time. Following that, we walked to McDonald's for a choice of an ice cream treat or a yogurt parfait. Everyone enjoyed the Fun Thursday activity!

Middle School

The middle school and sixth graders have been meeting together to learn about the Hillsborough River. The Hillsborough River contains a rich culture and was an extremely important geological feature to the early settlers in Tampa. This week the Middle School and 6th grade went to Nature's Classroom. Nature's Classroom is an educational program that teaches thousands of middle school students in Florida about the Hillsborough River. The middle school class and sixth graders went on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It was an interesting and rewarding experience. There were many animals at Nature's Classroom such as the Florida panther, snakes, opossums, turtles, etc. Everyone enjoyed themselves and learned a lot.

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY: This week we visited from our seats, a zoo where we found a monkey that hates bananas, wears glasses and his passion is to read the newspaper on a daily basis! As we read, we discovered more peculiarities about this talented monkey.  We enjoyed the reading, had some question/answer time, true or false sentences, and welcomed interesting comments from students.  We then had a review about animals and their eating habits.  We also practiced "I like" and "I don't like" in Spanish followed by types of foods.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: Talk about a group of students that love their Spanish lessons! After reading "Carla's Sandwich", we had some oral and written exercises. Students made their own unique, creative sandwiches out of construction papers and other materials. (See photo at right. ) We then used plastic props to practice the different ingredients and labeled everything in Spanish. Our "sandwiches" were accompanied by a shake, a protein drink, or other drink. Some students made actual sandwiches using some unusual spread or ingredient and they became part of their lunch! Well, the sky is the limit for us!

MIDDLE SCHOOL: On Monday, we had the visit of our characters made last week-the students were very thorough and let their imaginations soar. A lot of work went into their posters, biographies and paragraphs-- it was quite impressive. The rest of the days, students attended their Nature Classes, and I heard it was a lot of fun.

TRIVIA FACT: Madrid, capital of Spain has three art galleries in close proximity called the "GOLDEN TRIANGLE".   They consist of El Prado Museum which has 4000 works of art including Botticcellis and Goyas, The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza which features works by Renoir and Van Eyck, and The Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia completes the triangle. This galleria houses 20th century Spanish Art including the famous GUERNICA by Picasso.

Gather at the Park Today After School

For the rest of the school year, BPS families can find one another after 3:30 pm dismissal at Hubert Park, the neighborhood park of the school at Hubert Avenue and W. North B Street, one block away from the school.  Come for playtime and socializing at the park, which is located next to the city's North Hubert Art Studio.  There is a shaded area with picnic tables, playground equipment and lots of green space for running and games.  You may want to bring water since the afternoons have heated up this week.  Look for Pam and Berkeley Kittredge who have promoted getting together after school this semester for Friday fun.

The last order for Scholastic Books for the school year is being placed next Tuesday, April 23rd.  You should have received a flyer this week.  You may order using the flyer or go online and order from Scholastic Books Online.

Celebrity Auctioneer Steve Persall, Film Critic of the Tampa Bay Times, conducted the Live Auction
