Auction Brings In $44,500
Generous families and friends helped make the 12th Annual Spring Auction a success last Saturday evening.
In addition to raising this impressive sum,
a fantastic party
was enjoyed by the 125 in attendance.
"A Sunshine State of Mind" was the theme of the evening and the mood of the Auction-goers, as you can see by the photo at left and the ones below in the Office Notes.
Thanks to the creative force of Carmen Gonzalez, who designed the decor, and the members of the Auction Committee, school staff and families who helped create the fantastic atmosphere.
Congratulations to Miguel de la Garza, winner of the iPad Bundle Raffle and to Cynthia Alfonso who won the Money Tree Raffle.
The spirit of community is strong at

Nicholas, Lucas & Zeke explore in the garden

We are getting ready for Earth Day on April 22nd with lessons on endangered species and insects of Florida. In the garden, the children have discovered ladybugs in their larval stage and pupa stage. They are learning about the life cycle of the ladybug. Also, our sunflowers have blooms on them!
It was great fun seeing our parents at the auction. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves and thank you for coming!
On Wednesday this week, Ms. Jane, Gabrielle's mom, came to our class and read a book called Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. She also brought mini-greenhouses for each of the children to grow cilantro. Thank you, Ms. Jane, for coming and for bringing this great spring project.
Amy, Zoe Z.'s mom, came today and read about maple syrup to the class. She and her family recently returned from a trip to New Hampshire where they visited a family who makes maple syrup. Thank you for coming and for the treat made with maple syrup.
If your child/ren have a summer birthday and would like to celebrate it before the school year ends, please talk to your teacher and we can accommodate a day that will work for all of us.
Have a fantastic weekend!

The ants go marching two by two, hurrah, hurrah! We are continuing our studies of insects, specifically the ant. Did you know that there are at least 20,000 kinds of ants throughout the world? The only places without ants are cold and icy - like the Arctic and Antarctic. Ants have been around since before the dinosaurs!
We watched a fabulous BBC documentary called Planet Ant- Life in the Colony. We got a close up look into leafcutter ants. These ants are from Central and South America. They chew off pieces of leaves and then carry them to their nests. They don't eat the leaves, but rather use them to grow a special type of fungus that they do eat. Leafcutter ants live in nests of over one million ants!
We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our ants. When they arrive by post, we will place them in our AntWorks, a space habitat for ants. Feel free to stop by and check them out next week.
Thanks, Lower Elementary families, for coming to the Auction!

Thanks to all our parents who were able to attend the auction and/or support the school through this event. It was a great party and terrific food! All of our students worked very hard on the various auction projects you saw there and we appreciate each child's contribution.
We continued our new unit on Human Anatomy this week. We divided into six groups of three students. Each group represents a body system. We're studying the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems. We have several projects planned for each group to complete and as we are working on things, you never know what might happen! Groups will learn about various diseases that may be particularly related to their system and we'll also learn about keeping our bodies healthy. Look for more information on our project in the coming weeks.

Middle School has been working hard to complete their Religion Compare and Contrast Essays. We are learning to use the MLA Reference style.
We are working on our new unit about the Hillsborough River with the sixth graders and are going to Nature's Classroom Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week.
We are finished with all our Wordly Wise lessons and are studying for the final tests!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Two short stories about fish were our main source of lessons this week. Students enjoyed the content of the "tales" very much. We reviewed bodies of water and also water containers such as bucket, glasses, bathtubs, fish tanks, aquarium, fountain, bird bath, etc. No one was ready to find fishes in a baby carriage or catch a cow-fish, a pig-fish, a goat-fish, or a rabbit-fish. No doubt, a "fisherman's tale" for sure!
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We had a fun week learning about the basic structure of a house, the materials and people who built it including; the planners, architects, artists, painters, and contractors. We also reviewed rooms in the house and household appliances. Some students drew the plans for their dream houses while others preferred to build it out of cardboard or paper. It was a fabulous experience! MIDDLE SCHOOL: We had a fun-filled week. Each student "created" a person and gave him or her an identity with their own physical features and personality traits. We already know their likes and dislikes, their living arrangements, professions, religions, favorite colors, types of food, hobbies, etc. On Monday, they will be visiting our classroom and talk about themselves as the person they "created". One thing is certain--they are all at least bilingual! What a creative and enjoyable project-I am so proud of you all! TRIVIA FACT: Some South American countries give free lunches to school children, regardless of their economic situation. The idea is to implement good nutrition and give a boost to the local farmers and small business owners.

A Tampa tradition for many years, the Storytelling Festival takes place on Saturday, April 20th from 9 am to 4 pm at Hillsborough High School, 5000 Central Avenue. Storytelling will take place all day by both professional and youth storytellers. Costumed characters from literature will be strolling the grounds and there will be arts, crafts and a book fair. Enjoy a picnic on the lawn or find lunch at one of the local Tampa food trucks at the Festival. The event is free.
In Appreciation
So many deserve thanks for their work, generosity, support and caring attitudes that made the Auction a success. The Auction Committee started in January and carried out an amazing job planning the party and working to create an auction of nearly 200 items. The staff of the school worked with students to create the unique, child-created art at the heart of the Live Auction and the class projects. Parents from school families contributed class basket donations, wine for the Instant Wine Cellar, bought raffle tickets, solicited donations and donated items.
Special thanks go to Jim Rice, A La Carte Pavilion, for the appetizers and delectable dinner buffet, John and Grace Like for the bar and beverages, especially the Key Lime Green Flash, Sammi Fiorelli of Rinaldi Printing for the gorgeous signs, Carmen Gonzalez of Carmen's Flowers, A 1 Foliage for the lush tropical plants, Delite Entertainment for the lighting, Robert Purcell for the metal yard and garden sculpture and Tacy Troncoso of MamaRazzi Photography for shooting every child in the school, printing and donating their framed photos and bringing her energetic support to every part of the Auction effort!
