Kids Preview &
Kids Wish Lists
This afternoon the 1st through 8th graders had a chance to preview many of the items in
tomorrow evening's Auction.
They signed the Kids Wish List cards beside the items they hope their parents will bid on and try to bring home.
The students enjoyed seeing their
class projects in their finished states as well as the projects from the other classes.
As usual, the creative talent of BPS students shines through in every project.
Look for these masterpieces in the Live Auction along with the Instant Wine Cellar.
And ask your children about today's preview!

"Viva Florida 500" This week we focused on the State's Quincentennial (1513 - 2013) of its discovery by the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.
Children enjoyed learning about the legend of Ponce de Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth and why he named our state "Florida". He named it in honor of Spain's Easter time Feast of Flowers, Pascua Florida ("tierra de flores" - "land of flowers"), and for its bright sunshine, wealth and beauty. Children also located St. Augustine on the peninsula of Florida and colored the state flag. Over the next few weeks we will be learning more about the state of Florida.
A very happy birthday to Katrina Denmon, who turned 5 on Tuesday! Thank you for the yummy treats!
Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday night at the Sunshine State of Mind Auction! Right: Ms. Denise & Ms Karen's Beach Basket

Lower Elementary

The lower elementary ladybugs have been busy growing and changing. They appear to be in their pupa stage, so we should have mature ladybugs next week We have been discussing which insect to observe next...maybe a praying mantis!
The children created some unique art for the auction, so be sure to come check it out and bid! We also studied the elements of a story, using Where the Wild Things Are as an example. Now, the students are working hard to create their own stories with illustrations. This will be ongoing through next week.
We have also been working hard on our math, with new lessons on multiplication with the stamp game, new word problems, and a lot of challenging abstract addition and subtraction.
Hope to see many of you at the Auction on Saturday!

On Tuesday the students completed the frog dissection along with Middle School students. We worked in groups of 2 or 3 and along with teacher supervision everyone had a good experience. Some of us watched and some wanted to do the actual work. We had watched a video of a dissection and done a virtual dissection prior to this experience. We all learned a lot about human anatomy during the process and the frog has most of the same organs as a human. We'll begin an in depth study of human anatomy as our final Science study and major end of year project.
Otherwise, our class has also been busy creating beautiful projects for the auction. We hope you attend so you have a chance to see all the art work and other projects we've worked on together.

MIddle School at the Mahaffey Theater for the Florida Orchestra
|
This week we had a new lesson in our Hillsborough River Unit. We all got to choose a class of animals that we wanted to write about in a presentation.
On Tuesday Middle School and Upper Elementary dissected frogs, and we learned about the frog and all if its body parts. We studied the similarities of the frog's anatomy to our anatomy.
On Thursday we went to the Florida Orchestra at Mahaffey Theater.
Our class has also been finishing up auction projects for this Saturday. Hope you come to "A Sunshine State of Mind".

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We started our lessons this week with a reading about a family of mice whose only daughter was named Chrysantemum. She loved her name until she went to school and her classmates began to tease her and make fun of her. Finally, the Art teacher came to the mouse's rescue and by the end of the teacher's intervention, the rest of the students wanted to be called Daisy, Lily, Rose or Iris. As an extension to the reading, students drew some scenes from the book and labeled them in Spanish.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We continue our quest to build complete and correct sentences in Spanish. We practice both in the written and oral format. Our main theme this week was related to the sea--a topic which we are very comfortable with and relate very well. We also used flash cards for vocabulary enrichment.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Conversational phrases, listening skills, and short dictations were the main bulk of this week's lessons. Students are diligently working at their own pace and progressing very well.
TRIVIA FACT: The Copan Ruins in Honduras are the best testimony to the Mayan culture. They are considered the most valuable source of information about the Mayans. Its hieroglyphs are fully intact and extremely well designed in comparison to others in the world. The Auction has finally arrived! Let's do our part to make it a success. See you there!
