PreK/Kindergarten

We are welcoming spring this week with lessons on the seasons and springtime holidays. The children enjoyed sharing stories about their spring break and all the fun they had. We talked about St. Patrick's Day and the traditions of wearing green which represents the "Emerald Island" and the beautiful green countryside of Ireland. We read several legends about St. Patrick and the children made flags of Ireland, shamrocks, rainbows and harps.

Zoe Zoppi's parents, Rick and Amy, shared the book "Green Wilma" and brought Lucky Charms cereal to share with the children to graph and eat. Thank you!

The Spanish vocabulary words related to spring that we are practicing are: primavera - spring, mariposa - butterfly, conejo - rabbit, pajaro - bird, huevo - egg, flor - flower.  In the photo above, Garrett and Nicholas are drawing primavera items.

Zoe Garruto is a big sister! Congratulations to the Garruto family on the newest addition to their family, baby Noah!

We are working on our projects for the Spring Auction.  Each class will have a beautiful, framed work of art for parents to bid on.

 Lower Elementary
Julian enjoys a book

This week we started our study of entomology.  We learned that this word comes from the Greek word, entomos, "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented."  Thus the word entomology is the scientific study of insects.

At the moment, we are studying butterflies and moths.  The book we are following along with is Butterflies and Moths by George Fichter.  Did you know that there are more than one million kinds of insects in the world?  Actually there are more insects in the world than any other kind of animal.

The children were amazed to learn that the Pygmy Blue butterfly is one of the smallest butterflies.  It has a wingspan of about half an inch.  It is tiny!  The smallest moth is the Solitary Oak Leaf Miner Moth.  It measures in at less than a quarter of an inch.  That is amazing!

3rd grade parents:  Please note that our annual over-night trip will be taking place April 26-27th.  We will be traveling to St. Augustine.  One parent must accompany each child.  Please look for more information to follow.

Upper Elementary
Pamela, Gabe & Owen work on the design for a stepping stone

Everyone returned from Spring Break ready to go back to work. This week has passed with students getting back into the routine.

Next week we'll begin a unit on Biology and classification. We will learn about the Five Kingdoms and then get into a classification of the animal kingdom. We will do an earthworm observation activity and, as we progress, we have plans to do a virtual frog dissection.  The virtual dissection will be followed by working in pairs to dissect a frog. Students can learn a great deal about human anatomy and systems from the dissection of a frog.

Our final class project will be developing an "Imaginary Island." This is a complex project integrating many subject areas including use of Technology. There will be an at home component to the project. More details will come home by the first part of April.

Students have worked in art on their live auction piece as well as on designing garden stepping stones.  This year's stepping stones will incorporate some of the values we studied in our rights and responsibilities unit.  The students' artwork is always beautiful and unique.

Middle School

This week we have been working on Justice Teaching, and Professor Smith brought in two of her college students to talk to us about the trial. They helped both the defense and the prosecution teams prepare for our trial about the Titanic.

We also have been working on our note taking skills and compare and contrast paper.  We get to chose which religions we want to compare, and will be writing a paper using MLA formatting. All of us are trying to finish up the yearbook as well.

We finished planning our end of the year trip to Destin, Florida,  and we're all very excited  Today our class went to the Renaissance Festival.  We had so much fun!

LOWER ELEMENTARY:  Welcome back students, and welcome Spring! We had a busy week learning about words related to spring including an outdoor lesson to look for "signs of spring". We also found spider eggs, birds' nests, caterpillars, budding flowers, and leaves. We encountered many pleasant surprises from "Mother Nature" and students and teacher enjoyed the cool Florida weather. We also played "The Bird In the Nest"; very appropriately for this season!

UPPER ELEMENTARY: We reviewed/learned the name of 15 flowers in Spanish and wrote sentences using them. We visited the garden and wrote individual lists of the different objects and "literally" smelled the flowers. We then talked about the meaning of spring in different cultures.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: This week found us writing descriptive paragraphs or independent sentences about the beginning of spring. We explored the origin of this beautiful season and learned about the legend of the sunflower as told by South American Natives.

TRIVIA FACT:  Lake Nicaragua is the second largest lake in Latin America. It is home of the only freshwater sharks in the world. The sharks are BULL SHARKS (see right) that swam upstream chasing food and then eventually stayed in the lake and evolved to live in freshwater.
