Thank You,

Families!

The beautiful weather set the stage today for our Cultural Day Celebration covering

Rights & Responsibilities

and

North American Biomes.

Many families turned out and took time to carefully inspect the impressive displays of the children's work.

As usual, fantastic volunteers helped put the program together, set up the lunch and helped clean up afterward.

Thanks to everyone!

Make sure to see the photos below in Office Notes.

PreK/Kindergarten

Giselle, her sisters Solange & Camille, and friend Aria

Our classes have been very excited about Cultural Day this week. They have been working very hard to create and finish up work to share with their family. As we started to put their work up, they became even more eager to make more things to share!

This week we introduced the flag of Ireland and talked a little bit about Saint Patrick's Day. We learned where Ireland is located on the Europe map. We also talked about the meaning of the colors on the flag of Ireland. When we get back from break we will explore Irish culture even more.

On Tuesday Ms. Jeanne, a dental hygienist from Pediatric Dental Center, came and talked to our students about taking care of their teeth. The kids really enjoyed her dinosaur puppet.

On Thursday we celebrated Brody's birthday. Thanks to Brody's mom, Rachelle, for the fantastic treat and joining us to celebrate Brody's special day. We also want to send out a big happy birthday to Stephanie who turned 6 years old on Friday.

Hope you all have a safe and relaxing spring break!

 Lower Elementary

Well, we have had quite the week here in the Lower Elementary.  We are proud of the work you saw on Cultural Day and thank you for coming.

We are finishing our studies of the biomes of North America.  We watched a fabulous video on the ecosystems and biomes of North America.  The children then worked on several reports of animals and their biomes.

We also wrapped up our Six Traits of Character studies.  It is lovely how the study has really been such an eye opener for our little ones.  Our study of black history and slavery, as well as our study of character traits including being nice to each other and treating others with respect.

We also read the book, The Beatitudes, from Slavery to Civil Rights by Carole Boston Weatherford.  This book is based on a poem and traces the African American journey from slavery to civil rights.

3rd grade parents:  Please note that our annual over-night trip will be taking place April 26-27th.  We will be traveling to St. Augustine.  One parent must accompany each child.  Please look for more information to follow.

Upper Elementary

This week we continued to do our regular class work while finishing Biome projects and character trait reports. We hope you enjoyed seeing all of this at Cultural Day. We appreciate everyone who was able to come. It's always nice to display the work done by our students.

When we return from Spring Break, it will be back to our normal routine. We'll also be preparing some special projects for our Spring Auction:  A Sunshine State of Mind. We know none of our parents will want to miss that special event. Have a safe and restful break next week.

Middle School

Hello middle school parents. We would like to tell you about what we did this week.

On Monday we went to the Hindu temple and on Tuesday we went to a Mosque. On Wednesday we had a yearbook meeting and worked on our ecology and religion posters. On Thursday we finished our ecology posters and worked on the Character Education paper. On Friday we had Cultural Day! (Photo at right: Allison, Julia, Maya, Erin & Berkeley)

This week has been fun for middle School. We hope you had an awesome week!

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY: This week found us working in vocabulary related to nature, furniture and foods. We also practiced via flash cards and colorful pictures. In addition, we read a short story about a turtle and her friends.  This group is participating very well and learning at a steady pace.

UPPER ELEMENTARY: We divided our lessons into 3 main parts. A) We wrote sets of rhyming words containing from 2 to 8 words per set. This vocabulary included verbs, adjectives and nouns. B) We worked on family of words (a base or root word was chosen and it was expanded to create a richer vocabulary, always keeping the same root). C) Compound nouns in Spanish were introduced and used in complete sentences in both the written and oral form.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: It was a "fantastic week" as we put to use our imagination and talent writing a composition or short story about a magic event or writing independent sentences about conversational phrases used in fairy tales. Some of the phrases included chained dragon, crystal forest, chocolate swamp, mean queen, dark dungeon, beautiful princess, enchanted volcano, stone tree, happy mermaid and sad extra terrestrial.  On Thursday we had "story time" and students read their enchanting stories.

TRIVIA FACT:  The word "JAGUAR" comes from a Native American word that means "he who kills in one leap". Jaguars are found in Central and
South America. They were regarded with reverence in Mayan and Aztec cultures as communicators between the dead and the living and as a ruler or powerful warrior respectively.

May you all have a pleasant and safe Spring Break!
