PreK/Kindergarten

Ruby & Stephanie enjoy graphing their snack

The children continue to discover where their food comes from and where it goes when they are finished with it.  We are observing the changes in our mini-landfill jars and recycling paper and plastic from lunch. We are also learning about the characteristics of water as a natural resource.

The kindergartners learned about how ferns grow from spores and made fern forests in art.

Thank you, Ms. Amy, Zoe Zoppi's mom, for sharing her time with us reading and celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday. On March 2nd, he would be 99 years old. The children enjoyed the special snack she brought and sorted the different colors of goldfish crackers on a graph.  What a tasty activity inspired by the book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

Ms. Ada and Ms. Katrina's class welcome, Parker Kilbourne. He is 6 years old and joins us as a kindergartner in the class.

 Lower Elementary

This week has been fabulous!  We talked all about Black History.  We specifically discussed and learned all about Harriet Tubman.  This brave abolitionist led over 300 slaves to freedom through her underground railroad.  Harriet was born into slavery in Maryland.  Her parents were slaves and therefore she was a slave too.  The children were fascinated that young Harriet followed the North Star to find her way literally to freedom.

Our Character Education Studies Weekly was all about respect.  We read more about Harriet Tubman and we discussed what life in America would be like if we were not free.  We are currently reading a book called The Road to Freedom, Harriet Tubman by Rae Bains and Joanne Mattern.

The children are busy getting ready for the Cultural Celebration on Friday, March 8th.  Please join us for a fun and educational time exploring all that your children have been learning and discovering!  You will see the study of the Six Pillars of Character and the study of North American biomes.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Upper Elementary

This week we've been working in groups with the third year students on Biome projects. (See photo right of Elena and Lauren working.)

Everyone is busy completing all the components and mounting them on their display board. Individually, students are wrapping up the Character Development Unit by completing the report on character traits of a famous person.

We began reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. We're just getting into this exciting and interesting story. We look forward to seeing everyone next Friday at the Cultural Day celebration.

Middle School

Hello, parents of Beach Park School I would like to inform you about the week's events, many related to our world religion study.

On Monday we had justice teaching and Ms. Nyssa Hanger came in and taught us about Christianity. On Tuesday we went to a synagogue, Congregation Beth An, and learned about Judaism. On Wednesday, we had a yearbook meeting and went on a field trip to the new Dali Museum. (See right.)

On Thursday, the class went on a field trip to a Buddhist temple called the Thai Temple. On Friday there was no school but there were parent teacher student conferences. (See photo above in the Important Dates.)

It has been a fun week for middle school!                      by Maddie Rice

Spanish

LOWER ELEMENTARY:  We read a very neat story about a leaf.  We learned some facts about the important task of a leaf in connection to the plant or tree and we gathered leaves and classified them according to sizes, shapes, and colors. We listened carefully as the leaf told us her story and the chores she has to do as every season approaches. It was an eye opener to imagine ourselves dancing in the wind, showing off our beautiful colors, blending with other plants, and having a very productive existence--just like us!

UPPER ELEMENTARY:  We read a book about shapes and riddles, then students paired up and wrote their own riddles in Spanish incorporating shapes. Some of the riddles were related to food, famous buildings, household objects, etc. What is round, delicious and made with ovals? Well, it is an omelet! We also cut out various shapes and put them together to form houses, bridges, ice cream cones, hamburgers, ornaments, pyramids, and means of transportation. It was another fun week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: We had fewer lessons this week because students went on some field trips pertinent to their studies. Our Spanish lessons were all about verbs of the 2nd conjugation in the present, past, and future tenses.

TRIVIA FACT: Spain is the number one (NUMERO UNO) producer of olive oil in the world; with 44% of the world's olive oil production. That is more than twice that of Italy, and four times more that of Greece.
