Beatrice plants wheat grass seeds
|
It has been quite a busy week for the Primary classes! The children learned about our presidents and did a few activities related to President's Day. For our cultural studies, we started a planting project. Each child planted wheat grass seeds in their own beautiful hand painted pots made from recycled yogurt cups. It has been a lot of fun getting our hands dirty and it will be even more fun watching our plants grow.
Each class has also enjoyed the new lesson on the shelf - lemon, lime and orange squeezing and tasting. They are discovering the difference between sweet and tart. If any of our families have an orange tree and can share some oranges with us, it would be greatly appreciated, because it is a very popular lesson.
The Bits N Pieces Puppet Theater came to the school and put on a puppet show for us on Wednesday. The puppeteer, Mr. Jerry, performed Jack and the Beanstalk for our children. It was a great performance and the children loved making their own puppets after the performance.
Happy 4th birthday to Garrett Senzon! Thank you for the yummy donuts.

This week has been quite presidential! Literally. We have been immersed in President's Day and the history that surrounds it. We talked all about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Did you know that President Lincoln was born in Kentucky and was a registered Republican? Or that George Washington was born in Virginia and was not officially part of a political party? We read the book called Presidents' Day by Anne Rockwell.
Our Character Education Studies Weekly was all about treating everyone fairly. It discussed the life of Helen Keller. We learned all about Braille and how you can feel words with your fingers. We got i

nto more detail about equal rights and how all people should have a chance to get a good education and a good job. We also discussed several vocabulary words such a race, religion, gender and abilities.
As you know, we have been discussing and exploring personal character and the Six Pillars of Character. This week we talked about caring. We even started a paper chain of compliments. It is so sweet. Each child can write down two sincere compliments a day. We have a goal that our chain of compliments will be so long that it will reach from Mr. Dick's office all the way to the playground! We are hoping to achieve this by March 8th, Cultural Day.

This week we continued to work on projects for Cultural Day, March 8th. Students are busy making outlines to write reports about the character traits of a historical person of their choice. They have been working on a life sized figure of the person in Art.
We're teaming up with third year students to complete group projects on each of the Biomes in North America. Group projects promote opportunities for collaboration and learning to work together.
All of our work will be on display during Cultural Day and we look forward to seeing everyone then.

We have have had a great week. As we continued our study of World Religion, we had Mr. Vijay Shreedhar (Meera's dad) come in and tell us about Hinduism. We also had a great presentation by Mr. Steve Falkowitz (Andrew and Elana's dad) about Judaism. Next week we will continue our study and also visit some places of worship.
We are making great progress on the yearbook as well. We want to continue to thank Ms. Tacy, Ms. Amy, and Mr. Steve for their help and guidance.
On Friday, we went to the Engineering Expo at USF. Thank you to Mr. Tony Fusco for our free meal tickets. We had a great time checking out all of the exhibits.
We also learned this week about the process of improvements can be made to things in our community, such as our own neighborhood park at Hubert Playground. We want to thank Mr. Alan Johnson (Derek's dad) for coming in and sharing with us what he does and what we can do as citizens of the community.
What a week and what a week to come!

Spanish
|
LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had some lessons about beginning sounds in Spanish. We practiced with reading and listening exercises. Students are gaining more confidence and their vocabulary is gradually expanding--some students are able to compose their own sentences. We also reviewed sizes and Geometrical shapes.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: We dedicated this week's lessons to nouns and adjectives and their proper use and place in a sentence. Mastering this part of the Spanish Grammar is a milestone since it brings together the structure of the language. We had a dictation followed by its translation. It included at least 30 nouns that had to be matched with suitable adjectives. We also did the opposite by using adjectives in the singular, plural masculine, and feminine form. A short story about animals in Africa completed our main topic for this week. MIDDLE SCHOOL: We read Marina's Muumuu. It is the story of Marina, a girl with a vivid imagination who has always dreamed of having a colorful muumuu; the traditional dress of the Hawaiian people, and finally goes to the bustling downtown with her grandmother to buy the fabric. That is the summary. We took to the next level and students were given three choices: they could retell the story in their own words in Spanish, could write a composition about an island real or imaginary, or describe a dress. Some of the girls opted for a typical long summer dress, but we also had descriptions of a wedding gown, a fantasy dress, and a bridesmaid dress. We also learned some of the lyrics for "It Was a Tiny, Yellow Bikini" which was so popular some years ago in Spanish. It was a very colorful week to say the least! TRIVIA FACT: Quinoa, the red, yellow, or brown whole grain with a slightly crunchy texture and a light nutty flavor is now used around the world. Quinoa was exclusively produced and used in the Andes for its nutritional value and versatility, it can be added to soups, breads, and eaten as a side or main dish. Quinoa is the "in" food for 2013 and is hitting the markets all over the world.
