We continue learning about different ways to take care of the Earth. This week we brought in two large containers that will be used for observing what happens to our waste after lunch. In one container we put our paper and plastic waste: yogurt and fruit cups, baggies, potato chip bags, etc. In the other we put our food waste: bread crust, apple cores, yogurt, etc. In the following weeks we will observe the changes that will happen.
Kindergarten children completed the first part of our nutrition unit with a session of questions and answers about the food pyramid. In Spanish we asked each other, "Que hay en tu plato?" "What is on your plate?" Children had the opportunity to practice naming different fruits, vegetables, milk and meat products.
Thanks to Ms. Amy, Zoe Zoppi's mom, for coming in to read to the class. The students enjoyed the stories.
On Valentine's Day, the children can pass out cards during our circle time. We will have them decorate a bag to collect their cards. Please remember when helping your child with their valentines to have them only sign their name to the cards: they should not address the envelopes. This will make the distribution at circle time go smoothly.

Wow! This week just flew right by! We have been growing our mold garden. It is quite disgusting, but as you know the elementary aged children love gross things! The children discovered, through the power of observation, that mold does not grow on all things and it grows at different rates. We discovered that mold grows best in warm, dark and moist places.
The mold you see on your bread isn't a singular organism, like an individual tree in the forest or flower outside of your house. Rather, mold consists of an accumulation of microscopic fungi. This means that when you can see some mold, what you are actually seeing is a colony of thousands (or even more) of individual fungus organisms. These colonies don't just sit on the surface, either. Rather, they have roots that extend down into the bread like plants have roots that go down into the soil. You canfind more fascinating information at Fun Facts About Moldy Bread at eHow.com.
This week Miss Kristen read the book, Living Sunlight, How Plants Bring the Earth to Life by Molly Bang and Penny Chisholm. (See photo above.) It is a lovely book that shares the cycle of the sun to plants to people and back again. It discusses molecules, energy, photosynthesis and more. Check out the sketch pads to see your child's illustration of this energy cycle.
We enjoyed our trip to Sweetwater Organic Farm today. We helped on the farm and saw everything about the operation from seeds to plants. We even picked our own salad that we enjoyed at the picnic tables under the oak trees. (See photo right of Ian, Leyton and Antonin.)
Thanks to our parent chaperone/drivers. We couldn't take these fantastic educational trips without you.
Valentine's Day: Children are invited to bring in valentines for their classmates. Please have your child sign his or her name to their valentines but do not write the friends' names on the envelopes. The envelopes should be left blank as this makes distribution much easier and more enjoyable for everyone. There are 26 children in the class.

This week we finished standardized testing and now we're getting back to normal with our work routine. We introduced the new book we'll be reading by learning about the author, Mildred Taylor, and predicting what they story might be about. The name of the book is "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry." Students will be completing several activities as we enjoy this story.
On Thursday we had a lesson on the people that live in the North American biome regions. We learned about the types of shelter, clothing, transportation and other important needs for life as it relates to the biome. For example, if you live in the polar region, you are most likely doing a lot of ice fishing for food!
Valentine's Day: The Upper Elementary class will exchange valentines with classmates on Valentine's Day. There are 19 students in the class. Students in this class may address their valentines to individual friends and put names on the envelopes. See the class roster accessible from the School Directory page on the BPS website. Contact the office if you need the password.

Middle School PE - how long can you hold this position?
|
This week on Monday and Tuesday the students finished up their standardized testing.
The whole week the students have been working on their ecology work. They have each picked a thing to fix in their community (school).
Wednesday we had a yearbook meeting in the morning. All of the students now have a page to layout. Also on Wednesday the seventh grade learned how to make their middle school portfolios.
Friday morning we did some mini debates. In the afternoon we had a math lesson on scaling.
Have a good weekend from the Middle School Class.

LOWER ELEMENTARY: Our reading this week was a sequel about how dinosaurs say good night to their parents. Very easy to read, but it had surprising insight as to how dinosaurs would behave when is time to go to bed...not much different than humans! Some of our lessons were with both groups combined and we took this challenge to play "The Bird In The Nest", "The Color Game" and "My Name Is...". We also had a very good, interactive review about classroom objects. UPPER ELEMENTARY: "All About Spiders" was our topic for this week. We read "The Very Busy Spider", then learned the main parts of the spider in Spanish, wrote facts about Tarantulas, Black Widows, Brown Recluses and giant spiders that can measure up to twelve inches--well, the size of a ruler! Arachnophobia, anyone?! On Friday students created their own spiders using the now trendy Evo's boxes. We also referred to the famous Greek legend about Athena and Arachnida. MIDDLE SCHOOL: Due to the Standardized Testing we had fewer lessons this week. We had a thorough dictation followed by the use of given vocabulary in oral and written sentences. Next week, we will resume our regular schedule. TRIVIA FACT: In Chile, it is customary when a child loses his/her first tooth, their mother will have it made into a charm, set in gold or silver and she will wear it as part of a charm bracelet or around her neck in a chain!
