Everett and Ella working in the garden
|
This week the children have been learning about temperate forest animals and enjoying the garden. The kindergarteners made garden journals and learned about the parts and properties of the triangle.
In Spanish we are practicing the greetings, Buenos Dias, Buenas Tardes and Buenas Noches. We also read Buenas Noches Gorila by Peggy Rathmann.
Everyone is enjoying this early spring weather and exploring the garden off the patio. The children are looking for butterflies and birds and learning the names of the different types of vegetables growing in the garden.
Thank you, Katie, Addison Perkey's mom, for reading to the class and Kathryn, Sam's mom, for sharing her experiences from her trip to India.
Have a wonderful weekend!

This week we have been working on spreading peace throughout the classroom and the entire Beach Park community. We started our discussion with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This always sparks some fabulous dialogue. We read several books about Dr. King and many of the children were shocked to hear about segregation. We also delved into Rosa Parks and her story.
Some of you may have noticed that we have a new large screen television in our classroom. Mr. Dick has been working hard setting it up. This week we were able to watch a short biographical video on Martin Luther King, Jr. It was awesome!
Earlier in the week, Miss Kristen read The Missing Piece Meets the Big O by Shel Silverstein. This book is so simple, yet carries a lot of meaning. The children discussed what happened and then went to their sketch pads to create their own pen and line drawing. They are all amazing and quite powerful. Feel free to stop by and take a look.

Students have been very busy this week. It seems as though our mornings fly by and Ms. Ann is constantly giving lessons and Ms. April is constantly checking up on the students' work and monitoring. We work together seamlessly and truly enjoy all our students.
The work the children are doing in Math and Geometry is amazing. Please feel free to drop into our class and see what's happening.
We are thankful to have a huge monitor hanging on the wall of our classroom. We are able to hook up our laptops and view student presentations clearly. We will also be able to use it for educational video.
We've also delved into the study of North American Biomes. Students are busy locating specific places on the Biome mat and creating their own maps. We also learned more about the carbon and nitrogen cycles this week.

Middle School students spread new mulch on the playground
|
This week in Middle School we had a lot of group math lessons. We reviewed range, mean, median, and mode. We also continued working on our Finance Literacy Unit.
We started our new book club books. We are reading Life of Pi by Yann Martel and The Lord of the Flies by William Golding.
On Wednesday we studied different ways electricity could be measured for our ecology study unit. We also had music on Thursday, a spelling test on Friday, and a year book meeting on Thursday that we made a lot of progress in! And now we are looking forward to a new school week next week!

LOWER ELEMENTARY: We had a very active week while reviewing vocabulary related to animals, clothing, colors, household objects, geometry shapes and nature to name some of the categories we practiced. It was an intense review!
We also read a story about Poldi (our friendly scare
 | La Ciudad Perdida, Colombia |
crow) and his three best friends as they related their daily activities.
UPPER ELEMENTARY: This week found us working on how to tell time in Spanish. Each student described what they do on a week day and also what their schedule is on weekends or holidays.
For fun and vocabulary enrichment we wrote three or four clues about objects, animals, or people, then we read the clues to the class while students guessed. Not every animal that is big, gray and has four legs is an elephant! It was an enjoyable assignment.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: The verb "SER" (to be) was our main topic for our lessons. We had several translations and dictations along with oral and written assignments to practice this important verb. We also worked on a unit titled "Everything you need to know about mangoes". It was informative, interesting, and very educational; not to mention the rich vocabulary contained in this unit. We observed the fruit and passed around the attached branches and leaves (both dry and fresh) to create a rubbing. We then carefully dissected the mango while studying the texture of the skin, the smell of the fibrous pulp, and concluded with a taste of this exotic and now very popular tropical fruit.
Trivia Fact: "La Ciudad Perdida" (The Lost City), is found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Colombia. It is a remote area only accessible by hiking. The trek takes 5-7 days through ancient paths in the jungle, over 25 kilometers of coca plantations, across numerous rivers, and finally 1,200 steep steps to the top. Not for the timid or faint of heart!

Parent Information Meetings: Moving Up
In February, families will have the opportunity to re-enroll for the 2013-14 school year that will start on August 12, 2013. For students who are in the third year of their class (Kindergarten, 3rd Year in Lower Elementary and 6th Year in Upper Elementary), the next year will bring a change in classroom and teachers.
On Thursday, January 24th, three "Moving Up" meetings will be held simultaneously in the evening to inform parents about the goals and curriculum of their child's next class. Although of greatest interest to parents of children who will be moving up in the following year, these meetings are open for interested parents of any age child.
Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Child care will be provided.
Girl Scout Cookies
Thin Mints! Samoas! Trefoils! It's Girl Scout cookie time again. Erin Melvin, 7th grade, has been a Girl Scout for a number of years and is taking orders from Beach Park School families. You may stop in the office and fill out the order form next week. You must order by Thursday afternoon, January 24, so don't forget or you will regret missing the annual cookie sale!
