Welcome back and Happy New Year! The children are very excited to be back at school and have been sharing stories about their holidays.
All the students have been reviewing and practicing their favorite lessons and working on new ones. We have introduced winter animals, the Artic and lessons about formation and types of snowflakes.
The kindergarteners worked on sequence and understanding passage of time. We have been focusing on change of seasons and calendar activities to reinforce these concepts.
We are happy to welcome three new friends to our classrooms. Zoe Zoppi has joined Ms. Ada and Ms. Katrina's class and Macy Moore and Isla Hoffman joined Ms. Denise and Ms. Karen's class.
Gideon celebrated his 6th birthday on the 6th! Happy birthday, Gideon and thank you for the yummy donuts. Thanks, too, for sharing your hamster with the class.

Happy New Year! We have really had a fabulous first week back at school. The children have grown, literally, and gotten right back into the swing of things.

This week we focused on getting back into our routines and welcoming Miss Kristen to the Lower Elementary. We are all very excited to have her here.
We have also been working on several botany experiments. We are planting and growing and learning all about botany and the needs of plants. If you look in and around our classroom you will see lots of containers and seedlings forming. It's pretty cool.
Miss Kristen introduced a fabulous book titled; Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. It tells a tale of expressing kindness and spreading joy on a daily basis. We even have a lower elementary bucket that is getting filled with pretty gems, each time a child sees or creates an act of kindness. We are learning to fill each others buckets, rather than taking or emptying a person's bucket with negative actions or words. It is so awesome to watch as our class bucket overflows!

We are glad to be back at school and we wish everyone peace, love and happiness in the coming year.
We are beginning our unit on rights and responsibilities this week. We learned about the heroism of Charles Lindbergh and how we can relate some examples from his life to the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Justice and Fairness, Caring and Civic Virtue and Citizenship.
We also began reading "Holes" by Louis Sachar. Students read about the author and began working on vocabulary and reading comprehension activities related to the book. Everyone received a new Geometry lesson this week. Sixth years proved that the three angles of every triangle will equal 180 degrees. (See photo).Fifth year students learned that the triangle is the basic constructor of all shapes and fourth year students began learning about the parts of a triangle.

It's been a good start to the new year. We started our new unit of study: Campus Ecology and Sustainability.
We are also continuing to work on our financial literacy unit. Students will start either Segment II of Algebra or Critical Thinking for FLVS as soon as the class is assigned.
We have also chosen our new book club book: The Life of Pi and The Lord of the Flies.
Thank you to Josh for celebrating his birthday with the class on Tuesday.

"Feliz Ano Nuevo para todos"! (Happy New Year to you all) and best wishes for a prosperous 2013!
LOWER ELEMENTARY: We read a story about four animals that decided to make a living as street musicians after their owners had abandoned them. Their decision was short-lived after they became rich in a very unexpected way! This reading was easy to understand and the students enjoyed the pictures and the story very much. We took this opportunity to review musical instruments and sing a song about them. We also practiced some basic vocabulary via flash card. UPPER ELEMENTARY: We started with an extensive practice about the use of definite and indefinite articles in the singular and plural forms. We then had some written and oral assignments to emphasize this exercise. We also read "Eleven Eagles", a story with the classic elements of a good fairytale; a king, a mean queen, spells, a cave, and a vivid imagination! We really enjoyed this reading and enriched our vocabulary with some new conversational phrases.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: This week we had a dictation followed by its translation. We practiced writing questions using the words "who?", "how many?", "how old?" and "where?" in complete sentences, including an answer pertinent to each question. We also introduced adverbs ending in "mente"- which is the equivalent of the ending "ly" in English. A review about the main sounds of the letters in the Spanish alphabet rounded up our weekly lessons.
TRIVIA FACT: Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio is the only person in the world to win The Formula One Grand Prix automobile race five times; in 1951, and from 1954 to 1957.

Parent Information Meetings: Moving Up
In February, families will have the opportunity to re-enroll for the 2013-14 school year that will start on August 12, 2013. For students who are in the third year of their class (Kindergarten, 3rd Year in Lower Elementary and 6th Year in Upper Elementary), the next year will bring a change in classroom and teachers.
On Thursday, January 24th, three "Moving Up" meetings will be held simultaneously in the evening to inform parents about the goals and curriculum of their child's next class. Although of greatest interest to parents of children who will be moving up in the following year, these meetings are open for interested parents of any age child.
Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Child care will be provided.
