Elmwood Eagle Scout Plaque

Since 2007 twenty-four Boy Scouts from throughout the Kansas City area have selected Elmwood as the site to complete their Eagle Scout projects. Joining the ranks in 2012 were: Austin Curttright (Troop 21, Wesley Heights United Methodist Church) and Kallen Hawkins (Troop 286, Stanley Ward, LDS Church). They both completed their projects in September. In November, Adam Litster (Troop 8, New Mark Ward, LDS Chuch) and Matthew Caffey (Troop 118, St. Peter's Catholic Church) completed theirs.

Adam Lister Project

The numbers for these twenty-four scouts are quite impressive. They have reset a total of 1,445 gravestones, placed 24 new Civil War markers, and given new memorials to 51 people who have previously rested in unmarked graves. For these 51 new gravestones the Scouts not only set them, but through their fundraising efforts they were able to purchase and donate them. The memory of being able to help honor a complete stranger in this way will be something these Scouts will carry with them the rest of their lives. And, these Scouts did not work alone. Helping them were 840 Scout leaders, parents, siblings, other troop members and friends.

HAL LOWENSTEIN

Hal Lowenstein

The University of Missouri honors Hal Lowenstein as a recipient of its 2012 Faculty-Alumni Award.

Each year, the Mizzou Alumni Association (MAA) honors individuals who make significant contributions to the university's missions of teaching, research, service and economic development.

Begun in 1968, the Faculty-Alumni Awards recognizes the achievements of faculty and alumni. Assistant, associate and full professors are considered for their work as teachers, researchers and administrators. Alumni
are considered for their accomplishments in professional life and service to their community and alma mater.

Winners of the 2012 Faculty-Alumni Awards were recognized at an awards ceremony held on October 12 at the Columbia, Missouri campus. The awards include the Distinguished Service Award and the Distinguished Faculty Award, the two highest honors that the association bestows. Also at the ceremony,

Lowenstein and 10 other alumni and faculty members were honored for their contributions
to Mizzou.

Lowenstein, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Elmwood Cemetery Society, earned his
B.A. in 1961 from the University
of Missouri and J.D. in 1965 from the University of Missouri School of Law.

Lowenstein, attorney in Armstrong Teasdale's Litigation group, previously served as a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District. He was the last appeals judge in Missouri to be appointed by Gov. Kit Bond and was one of the longest serving appellate court judges in the state.

Lowenstein began his legal
career as a trial attorney, and later as an Assistant Attorney General in charge of Jack Danforth's Kansas City office through 1972. Years later he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives-a position he held for nine years. In 1981, he became an appellate judge where he served for the next 28 years.

Lowenstein serves as an adjunct professor of law at MU's School of Law, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Washburn and Washington Universities. He received the Achievement Award from the MU School of Law in 2007, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association in 2009.

VOLUNTEER SPECIALISTS NEEDED

Stonemasons: A substantial amount of stone work is needed to repair retaining walls, mausoleums and the beautiful Armour Chapel.

Tree Experts: Elmwood is full of beautiful, but old, trees. After years of neglect these centerpieces of the beautiful grounds need a lot of TLC. There are also a lot of stumps that need to be ground up.

Monument Conservators: Many of the beautiful, but old, gravestones in Elmwood need immediate conservation to preserve them for future generations.

Painters & Carpenters: The Elmwood office and Armour Memorial Chapel are in great need of care. The office needs to be spruced up inside and out. The chapel needs conservators to aid in its historic preservation.

Ella at inurnment

TOUCHING MOMENTS

____________________________________________

The Inurnment Service
for Velma Barbara Rider

VELMA RIDER died on November 3, 2008. She was cremated and her ashes were kept by the family until her inurnment service on November 20, 2012 when they were placed in the family lot at Elmwood next to her husband William.

At the service Ella, the official goodwill ambassador of Elmwood, made her appearance, as she does at most occasions. Barbara Sangetta, Velma's daughter, was so moved by the experience she shared these thoughts: "The service for mom was an experience I would have only dreamed of! Everything was perfect. The cream on top was, of course, sweet Ella. We were all so humbled by her presence there with us. We are all still talking about it and will never forget what happened at Elmwood on Tuesday." She added: "I truly believe something very special was happening right before our eyes and my husband captured it in two of the pictures."

THE KANSAS CITY SPIRIT:
STORIES OF SERVICE ABOVE SELF

The Kansas City Spirit

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY defining moments which have shaped The Kansas City. Following the flood of 1951, Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards, commissioned Norman Rockwell to paint this spirit. His words to the artist were: "Paint a picture of The Kansas City Spirit that will forever symbolize the thing in good men's hearts that makes them put service above self and accomplish the impossible."

This book, The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self, not only recalls some of these defining moments, it examines the contributions and personal stories of a few of those whose lives exemplified that Spirit.

The Kansas City Spirit: Stories of Service Above Self
should not be read merely as a history book (although that it is). It is a how-to book for future generations of Kansas Citians... how to give back and make this community a better place in which to live. Example is a powerful force. The people profiled in this book are testimony to the fact that it does not matter whether you are rich or poor, woman or man, white or black, American Indian or Latino, young or old, Protestant, Jewish or Catholic, we all have a role to play in lifting up even the least among us.
