Weekly Highlights
After learning about lab safety, students in Ms. Kilian's class participated in their first lab!
Students got acquainted with newspapers during their first SJV Herald class. After reading them, they determined if the author was trying to inform, persuade, or entertain the reader. They also discussed how the newspapers were arranged to help the reader find what interests them.
In small groups, seventh graders determined the meanings of unknown vocabulary words. Students expressed these definitions in a variety of ways such as creating illustrations and using technology.
Students, parents and parishioners came together for fellowship at our monthly morning coffee, sponsored by the Home & School.

September 6, 2016
A special thanks to everyone who attended our Parent Information Night last week. On behalf of the entire SJV staff, thank you for your support of our school.   There was such a positive feel to the night, and there were great interactions between the staff and parents during the classroom presentations.

As many of you know, we introduced the Virtue Based Restorative Discipline program last week, but there are a few other follow-up points we would like to share. Please visit the VBRD homepage to read more about the program, and to gather additional resources.

VBRD is not a discipline program. It is a school culture and community program that cultivates virtues to help student resolve conflicts in a meaningful way. It moves away from punitive methods of punishment, and teaches the students how to repair harm that was done using restorative practices and Catholic teachings. There are two major steps in this process that we are currently focusing on.

The first is to instruct and inform our students about virtues. Our focus for the school year will be the virtue of unity. We thought it would be a perfect virtue to focus on as we begin this journey together as a united community. We will also highlight different virtues throughout the year to emphasize. In addition, the teachers will instruct the students on virtues and will incorporate them into their daily teaching.

The second step is to implement class circles, which are short classroom meetings in which students are able to share, discuss, and connect with their classmates. Each circle begins and ends with prayer. Using a "talking piece," the students are able to have conversations to get to know each other, build community, and solve problems. The emphasis is placed on the students, while the teacher serves as the facilitator. We feel strongly that class circles will go a long way in helping our students build relationships with each other.

Finally, thank you to everyone who participated in our "Virtues Prayer Tree." Our students love walking by and seeing all of the prayers written for them by their parents. What a great unifying activity to begin the year!

Positively SJV,
Dan Demeter, Principal
