Using their critical thinking skills, Mrs. Kosterman's students built a replica of real life structures out of  blocks.

May 31, 2016
As we prepare to wrap up a very successful 2015-2016 school year, we wanted to give everyone a summer update. Despite our students leaving us for the summer, SJV does not slow down much!

First of all, we have formed a number of search committees who are extremely proactive in their efforts to fill our open teaching positions. We have been interviewing candidates on a weekly basis, and doing all we can to find the best possible teachers for SJV. As soon as we have hired all of our candidates, we will send out a special announcement detailing all of the new employees.

There are also a number of exciting opportunities for our staff members as well. A team of five staff members will be traveling to St. Louis in June to attend a four-day training in a program called Virtue Based Restorative Discipline. Essentially, it is an anti-bullying program that is designed to decrease anti-social behaviors and increase faith practices. It moves away from punitive methods of dealing with anti-social behavior, getting to the root cause using our Catholic virtues and faith as the foundation. This team will then come back and train the rest of the staff for the 2016-17 school year.

A number of staff members will also be participating in the following programs to deepen and strengthen their own professional development over the summer:
  • Ed Camp 2016 - This is an opportunity for our staff to join professional educators in the Archdiocese to collaborate and discuss relevant topics in the world of education today.
  • Mentor Training - Three of our teachers will be formally trained as mentor teachers to provide support and mentorship to our new employees.
  • Learning Support Conference - Six of our staff members will be attending a two-day conference on assessment, feedback, and grading in August.
  • SJV teachers will also be engaged in course work at the university level as they further develop 21st century teaching skills.
While summer is a time for some relaxation and fun, we can assure you that our staff will be working very hard to ensure that we have a great 2016-17 school year!

Positively SJV,
Dan Demeter, Principal

Traffic Pattern Change
Due to the festival ride and tent arrivals, traffic patterns will be altered on June 6 and June 7.  ALL CAR traffic will need to go through the playground lot off of Norhardt Rd.  ALL BUS loading and unloading will occur on Gebhardt Rd.  Thank you for being patient, slowing down and following the direction of the teachers on duty.
Non-Uniform Day
Students may be out of uniform on both June 6 and June 7.  Please follow the guidelines in the parent handbook regarding out of uniform days.
Hot Lunch Balances
Just a reminder to all SJV families- the balance in your child's hot lunch account will carry over to next year. For the 8th graders, the balance will go to their next sibling, or will be refunded, if over $5, if there are no sibling accounts. For account balances of graduates with no younger siblings and non-returning students that are less than $5, reimbursement is made only if requested in writing. We would appreciate any negative balances zeroed out by the last day of school. Happy Summer from the cafeteria staff - Claudia Towne, Judi Sottile, Jane Suro, Sue Stepp, Kim Nixon and Mary Claire Barker.
Battle of the Books
Saint John Vianney is very excited to once again participate in Battle of the Books (B.O.B)!  This voluntary program for students who will be in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in fall of 2016. Battle of the Books is designed to introduce children to new authors, as well as encouraging a love of reading, all in the spirit of friendly competition.  All readers are welcome, however, B.O.B is aimed at children who love to read and are committed to reading from the list of books provided.  We will have a meeting within the first few weeks of September for our formal kick off!  However, the book list for 2016-2017 is attached so any student that is thinking about joining in the fall can get a jump start on reading.  (Even if your child is not certain that he or she will participate, this is a great summer reading list!)

Volunteering by the Numbers
Total Volunteer Slots: 1,253
Total Volunteer Slots Filled: 551
Total Volunteer Slots Still Available: 702
Percentage of Slots filled: Only 44%
SJV's Festival is in 10 days and we can't do this without your help!  We're at 44% for volunteer staffing - which is down significantly from previous years.  Would you take a moment to look at the sign up forms and see what's still open (some stations have no sign ups!) Then, would you ask 2-3 of your friends to come work a shift or two with you at Festival?  We are counting on you!   Please look online for the most up to date availability or sign up on the forms in the narthex.  Thank you again for making SJV's Festival an award winning event!
Hip Hip Hooray, It's Independence Day!
We are excited to announce that SJV is once again participating in Brookfield's July 4th Parade! Those that joined us last year had a fantastic day celebrating our nation's independence with fellow classmates and school families.  If your family would like to pass out candy to spectators as you show your school spirit or if your kids have always wanted to be in a parade instead of watching one, come join us for some summertime fun!
Please contact Ann Marie Hess  if your school group or family is interested in celebrating July 4th SJV-style. Let Freedom Ring!

One of the ways that the athletic board will be supporting the coaches and assistants the upcoming season is a comprehensive coaches clinic that will support not only basic foundational skills and drills, but practice schedules and conditioning.  IF you are interested in learning more, please email Nisha Weyker directly with interest or questions by June 13. SJV Uniform Resale
Monday, June 6th, 8:00-10:00am
and 2:30-4:00pm in P210

NEW THIS YEAR:  Home and School is no longer running the uniform resale as a consignment sale. Therefore, any and all proceeds from the sale will be donated to the SJV Home and School Association to use for programming to benefit all the students of SJV.  If you would like to donate uniform items for the sale, you can drop them off in front of the parish office on Sunday, June 5th before or after the 9:00am and 11:00am Masses.  The resale is a great opportunity for families to purchase gently used uniforms. You will find a good selection of short and long sleeved polo shirts, pants and shorts; jumpers and skirts, sweatshirts and leggings. When donating items, please be mindful that shoppers at the sale are looking for items in decent condition. Please don't donate items that are stained or well worn.
Beat the summer heat with SCRIP for your favorite summer activities!  Earn rebates on your summer fun with SCRIP!  Our next order will be placed Monday, June 6.  No backpack delivery!  All orders must be picked up in the Parish office and will be available on Thursday,
June 9.
Thank you for a great year!  We encourage you to use SCRIP all summer long.  If you have never purchased SCRIP, now is the time to learn about it.  It is a great way to earn money for SJV and yourself.  If you would like more information, please contact Martha Connelly, Amy Lodes or Janet Fisher.
