January 19, 2016
Greetings!
I want to thank you for all of the warm wishes and congratulations on the birth of my son, Bobby.  He has been such a blessing for my wife and I, and we truly valued the time we got to spend together.  That being said, it's great to be back at school, and the purpose of this letter is to give you a snapshot of some of the major events going on at our school these days:

Teacher In-service Day: On Monday, the teachers participated in an in-service day focused on integrating technology into the classroom, planning major writing pieces, and how to differentiate their assessment for students. The teachers collaborated with each other and had a very productive day.

MAPs Testing: K5-8th grade students will be taking their winter MAPs test over the next couple of weeks. After the fall tests, the students received a projected growth score for the spring.   The winter test serves as a great checkpoint to track progress so far this school year.

Catholic Schools Week: We are coming up quickly on Catholic Schools Week, which begins Sunday, January 31st with our school open house after the 11:00am Mass. Please join us for Mass and feel free to stop by our classrooms after.  A more detailed schedule of the activities and events for Catholic Schools Weeks will be sent home by next week.

Middle School Exchange Program: During January, each of the middle school content area teachers was a guest instructor in the fifth grade classrooms. Fifth grade students had an opportunity to meet the teachers of the middle school unit and the middle school teachers are having the opportunity to greet, meet, and instruct students from the class of 2019! The experience will continue when the fifth grade students will be invited as guest students to the middle school wing. The purpose of this activity is to get our 5th graders excited about our great middle school and to get to know their future teachers.

Scout Sunday
February 7 at 11:00am Mass

St. John Vianney Parish is celebrating Scout Sunday on February 7 at the 11:00am Mass.  We invite parish members and guests active in scouting, past or present, to proudly wear their uniform!  We look forward seeing Girl, Cub and Boy Scouts, as well as leader uniforms from every Troop, Den, Pack and Council from our parish!  If you have earned the Catholic religious awards this year, please email Janet Fisher or phone 262-784-9673, so we may recognize your achievement. Cub scouts from the second and fourth grade will be receiving their "Light of Christ" and "Parvuli Dei" awards.  All Scouts are welcome to participate with this Mass and reception afterwards in the Church Hall.
Wanted:  Old Magazines
The K5 classes are looking for old magazines for classroom projects.  If you have any magazines you have finished reading, please send them to the school office and we will forward them on.
Winter is Here!
Please make sure your child comes to school prepared to go outside for recess.  Students will go outside if the "feels like" temperature is zero or above according to weather.com.  It is a great idea to label all of your winter gear so it can be returned if it gets misplaced.

If school needs to close due to inclement weather, you will receive notice from our emergency calling system, One Call Now.  You can also check the local TV stations and their websites.  SJV closes when Elmbrook School District closes or may do so independently for special circumstances.

This past weekend, bottles for the Coins for Babies Campaign were distributed. If you took a bottle, it should be returned the weekend of January 30. If you missed Mass and want to participate, bottles are located in the narthex- please feel free to grab one.  Your generous donations will go to help support the following organizations:

Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year, the Year of Mercy, a time for the Church to celebrate God's unimaginable, overarching mercy to the world. The Year began on December 8, 2015 and will continue until November 20, 2016. His motto is Merciful, like the Father. St. John Vianney will offer three more opportunities to learn more about how the Sacraments reveal the Mercy of the Father. These presentations will teach about the great gift that the Father gives us in the Sacraments and how these graced events help us to grow in mercy. The next presentation will be:

Grace and Sin- January 27, 2016
The mercy of God is a tremendous gift to everyone. We all need it because we all sin. Explore the meaning of grace poured out through the sacraments and the grace that helps us overcome sin in our lives. Presented by
Fr. Philip Schumaker, Associate Pastor, St. John Vianney Parish
