January 5, 2016
Greetings!
The start of a New Year often means a fresh start and new beginnings. The New Year offers a perfect opportunity to discuss a topic that exists in all schools, which is the problem of bullying. We are all aware that bullying exists in our society today. It is essential that schools partner with parents to do all we can to combat bullying.

The Home and School associations from St. John Vianney, St. Dominic, St. Joseph, St. Mary's Visitation, and Holy Apostles are excited to welcome Jodee Blanco, a New York Times bestselling author, national speaker, survivor, and celebrated anti-bullying activist. Jodee travels the country speaking to students, teachers, and parents about her own story growing up as a target of bullies. Her program, It's NOT Just Joking Around!, uses her past experiences growing up to inspire, motivate, and encourage students to handle situations involving a bully, whether they are the victim, the bully, or the bystander.

Jodee conducts a three part presentation to deliver a universal message to the students, faculty, and parents. On Wednesday, Jodee will present to our K5-4th graders in one presentation, the 5th-8th graders in another, and a faculty presentation after school. On Thursday, Jodee will be hosting the parent portion of her presentation from 6:30-8:00 at St. Dominic.

If possible, I encourage you to please try to attend the parent presentation. She will share what her parents and teachers did that helped, what didn't and why, as well as offer similar insights from the tens of thousands of bullied students she has worked with across the nation. The workshop will also include specific, practical advice for parents on how to intervene if your child is the victim, bully or bystander, from the rare point of view of someone who's actually lived through it and now dedicated her life to helping others. The parent portion is meant to be interactive, and it is encouraged that parents attend with their children. However, we are requesting that no children under the age of five attend.

Please visit Jodee Blanco's website for more information about Jodee, her best-selling book, Please Stop Laughing at Me, and her personal fight against bullying across the country.

Positively SJV,
Principal

Lunch Room Servers & Study Hall Monitors Needed During the Noon Hour
Parents are needed to help serve hot lunch.  There are multiple days available, but help is needed for this Friday as no volunteers are scheduled. Thank you in advance for helping out! Click here to sign up.

With the cold weather here, more middle school students are using the study hall option during the noon hour.  Parents are needed to help chaparone study halls in the library.  If you would like to help with this, please click here.
Winter is Here!
Please make sure your child comes to school prepared to go outside for recess.  Students will go outside if the "feels like" temperature is zero or above according to weather.com.  It is a great idea to label all of your winter gear so it can be returned if it gets misplaced.

If school needs to close due to inclement weather, you will receive notice from our emergency calling system, One Call Now.  You can also check the local TV stations and their websites.  SJV closes when Elmbrook School District closes or may do so independently for special circumstances.
Home & School News
Casino Night- January 30
Invitations were sent home with students inviting you to the Home & School Association Casino Night.  Enjoy a fun evening of cards, dice, karaoke and Vegas Style Fun.  To reserve your spot, return the Casino Night form and admission fee to the school office by January 22.
Box Tops for Education
Are you clipping and saving your Box Tops?  Start clipping and help your child earn a non-uniform day.  There will be a school wide collection this month. If the students bring in enough box tops to reach our goal, they earn a non-uniform day and our school earns money to fund different activities and projects!
A New Year for SCRIP
Happy New Year!  Are you making a list of resolutions for 2016?  Why not include shopping with SCRIP cards on a weekly basis?  They are easy to order and use while earning money for SJV (and tuition credit or cash back for you!)   Please place your orders online or bring your order forms to SJV by 8:30am on Monday, January 11; Tuesday, January 19; and Monday, January 25.

News about Sendiks Cards
There are now two Sendiks cards that are available through SCRIP, but they cannot be used interchangeably.
  • Sendiks Brookfield (Fine Foods)-located at Capitol and Brookfield Rd.  (Brown Bags)
  • Sendiks Market-with locations in Elm Grove, New Berlin, Wauwatosa, Greenfield, Whitefish Bay, Hartland, Franklin, Bayside, Mequon, Germantown, Grafton, West Bend.  (Red Bags)

Paper order forms only have the Sendiks Brookfield location.  We will assume this is the location you are wanting to order unless you tell us differently.  Online orders:  Please be cautious when ordering because both cards are listed.  Sendiks Brookfield will be the default and is listed first.  If you make a mistake when ordering Sendiks cards, we are sorry we will not be able to make any trades.  Thankfully most stores are within an easy driving distance if this should occur.  Thank you for understanding!

If you have any questions, please call Martha Connelly, Amy Lodes, or Janet Fisher.

What Goes Up Must Come Down!
What a beautiful Christmas season- thank you to everyone who had a part in preparing our church for the season.  This Sunday night after the 5:00pm Mass, we will be changing the environment back to Ordinary Time and could use more help.  We will be removing the lights, ornaments and trees The live tree goes outside and the many artificial trees in the narthex will be disassembled.  The swags  and wreaths will be taken outside to dispose of.  We do save the dcor items such as ribbons and pine cones for future year's use. The crche will be carefully deconstructed and statues returned to their packing boxes. If you can help, please bring work gloves and join in the fun.  If you can help, please let the Office of Liturgy know by phone 262-796-3947 or email.  It is a great way to earn service hours!

Six Tool Baseball School
Six Tool Baseball School is in need of several 11 year old and under boy's baseball players.  The SixTool Baseball School is a select youth baseball program directed by Marquette University High School's Head Varsity Baseball Coach, Sal Bando, Jr.  The 11u team competes in the M.A.J.O.R. Youth Baseball League (18 games) and in an additional six tournaments in the Summer.  We are dedicated to player development and will sacrifice any short term benefits for long term gains.  While creating a winning culture is important, and teaching the kids how to how to win is equally important, the win/lose record of our 11u team is insignificant to teaching the boys the game, developing their skill set, and learning the Six Tool way.  Please, contact Bob Roloff if your son would be interested in this program.
