In science, third graders measured mass, volume, temperature, and found physical properties of matter.  They discussed what they were doing in small groups and recorded their data.

Greetings!

Catholic Schools Week is the final week of January. This is a wonderful time to celebrate the blessing of our Catholic schools. This is a wonderful time to celebrate our Catholic identity. Beginning on Sunday, January 25th, the community of St. John Vianney Parish will be doing exactly these things. We have a roster of activities that are both prayerful and celebratory. Click here for schedule. The theme of the Rosary will be a focus for us. On Monday, January 26th, SJV students will partner with their buddies to make rosaries. On the morning of Tuesday, January 27th, we will gather as a school to say the Rosary. Throughout the entire week all classes will be working with artist in residence, Carrie O'Malley, to create a 4-panel mural depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. All students will participate in producing the approximately 4'x2' mosaic panels that will be on permanent display outside of the school library.

Please join us for the Mass at 11:00am on Sunday, January 25th that will initiate this week of activities. An open house will follow the Mass. Also, please consider joining us throughout the week for prayer and celebration. We would be especially grateful if you would join us for the Rosary at 8:05am on Tuesday, January 27th and for the All-School Liturgy at 8:05am on Wednesday, January 28th. Bishop Sklba will be our celebrant. Father Knippel and Father Schumaker will be concelebrants.

Your support of our focus on the Rosary is encouraged. Perhaps you would like to pray the Rosary as a family. This link to the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is a very helpful resource.
Peace,
Do you have family or friends who would like to receive the Shamrock Weekly and electronic invitations to our school events?  Please click here to submit their email address.
All School Liturgy
All are invited to pray with us at the next all-school liturgy, which will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 14 at 8:05am. Mass will be prepared by Mr. Demeter's 8th grade class.
School News
Friday, January 16
We will be having a spirit day on Friday, January 16.  Students may come to school in their SJV spirit wear or in the spirit wear of their favorite sport team.  Follow the parent handbook regarding non-uniform days.
School will dismiss at 11:30am.  There will be no chess club.
Between our family life, work life, and whatever might be left over for our personal life and well-being, we are running thin. As we raise our children, nourish their minds and bodies, and serve as role models, tutors, and coaches, we have to ask ourselves as Catholic parents,
what are we doing to feed ourselves spiritually?

You are invited to join us for a 3-part series presented by Fr. Philip Schumaker, where he will be discussing the following topics:
  • Faith and Family:  A Balancing Act?
  • Families at the Heart of the Church
  • Family:  Our Source of Dignity and Identity

Please click here to learn more about the Today's Catholic Family sessions.

Request for Food Donations
Catholic School's Week is quickly approaching and we need your help in the form of food and drink donations for the Open House on January 25th, 12:00-1:30pm.  Please use the Sign-Up Genius link and have your items to the school cafeteria or office by Friday, January 23 at 5:00pm. If you would like to coordinate another time to drop off, please contact Julie Needham. Thank you in advance for your help and we look forward to seeing you and your family at the Kick Off Open House for Catholic School's Week on January 25th!

Volunteers Needed for Junior Achievement Program

Starting next week, the 8th grade social studies classes will participate in an exciting month long economics program created by Junior Achievement program called JA Finance Park. JA Finance Park encompasses important educational lessons about personal financial literacy and career awareness, specifically focusing on the important skills of budgeting money, managing finances and income, savings and investing, debit and credit, and risk management.

As part of the program, the 8th graders will spend one day at a hands-on, experiential JA Finance Park site on Friday, February 13th from 9:00am-2:00pm. This visit will provide students with an opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a realistic setting.  Students will be responsible for planning a budget for themselves and their fictional family and putting all of their knowledge they have learned to use during the simulation.

To make the visit to JA Finance Park a real success, we need NINE volunteers to accompany us. Volunteers must also participate in a 60 minute training in preparation for working with the students before the students.  The training would occur on February 13th from 8:00-9:00am at the Finance Park location before the students got there. Volunteers must have completed the Safeguarding All of God's Children training beforehand.  Please contact Mr. D at dand@stjohnv.org  if you are interested in volunteering.

Home & School Meeting- Location Changed to Church Hall

Where is the best place to learn what is happening at school?   Where can you get answers to your specific questions?  The answer is at our Home and School meetings!  Join us Wednesday, January 14, 9:30 am in the Church Hall.  Bring your phones (or paper calendars) and add in all the new dates for the year.  It's a new year...there's new information to share.  See the meeting agenda for specifics.

You are invited!

Much of the success in our school is due to our dedicated parent volunteers.  As parents graduate out of SJV, new volunteers need to come in.  It's time to think about succession as we have many gifted parents out there who have talents they can share.  For those of you that have been a member of a committee, now is the time to let your light shine.  Think about stepping up to the next level and volunteering for a Home and School officer position.  How much time is involved?  What do officers do?  Come to the Executive Board meeting, Tuesday, February 3rd at 1:00 pm in the Conference Room and see first-hand.  You are not committing yourself to a job!  Please let Janet Fisher know if you plan to attend.

Looking for you!

Do you like numbers?  Are you organized and pay attention to details?  Home and School is looking for a Treasurer for next year.  You don't have an accounting degree?  You don't need one!  All can be learned first-hand from current treasurer, Martha Connelly.  Come aboard now and see how it's done during a Bids year.

Are you a planner and a communicator?  Do you like to organize and manage?  Consider Chairing or Co-Chairing Home and School next year!  Yes, even working parents can do this job!   Meeting times can be in the evenings so don't let that hold you back on offering your talents and service.  Thinking about it?  Talk to Clare Lange or Janet Fisher.
