Weekly Highlights

Mrs. Okruhlica's class and the 8th grade red religion group walked to Pick and Save with their buddies to buy cans and boxes of food. They were happy and proud to help each other "pack the pantry".

After Friday's final collection, we have achieved our goal- and gone beyond- breaking a new school record of 3827 items! Many local families in need will benefit from our efforts. Thank you to  all of our students and families for your contributions!

Middle school students in Mr. D's social studies classes held their Fantasy Geopolitics country draft recently.  The students researched what countries were in the news and drafted five world countries onto their teams.  The more the teams show up in the news, the more points the students get. By doing this, the students have learned valuable geography and current events skills.

Congratulations to all of the FIRST Lego League and Junior FIRST Lego League teams of SJV students who competed at Marquette High this past weekend.  You are world class thinkers, builders and programmers!  Way to go Technology Titans, EngiNerds, Mini Titans, Got Bots?, Chocolate Einstein Lightning Builders and Brainy Bots!
November 24, 2014
Greetings!

We welcome you to school on Tuesday, November 25th for conferences. During your visit, please stop by the library to say hello and learn about opportunities to support our very busy school library. Keep reading to learn more about just a few of the services we are proud to offer.

Small group literacy instruction - Students at the primary levels come to the library for small group instruction to expand their skills in reading and writing. This engaging instruction has given our humble library the nickname, Literacy Hub.

Homeroom library time - On a weekly basis, each homeroom in K4 through 5th grade comes to the library for story time, book talks, leisure reading, and to check out books. We are grateful to the many volunteers who facilitate this special time.

Raz-Kids - Each morning, our students in K5 through 2nd grade use this interactive internet resource to access over 400 books that promote development of reading skills. Learn more at http://www.raz-kids.com/ .

Resource study time and computer use - Middle school students can elect to use the library during the midday for quiet study or to access computers. This new program has been enthusiastically embraced by the students who are using the time and resources to their best advantage.

Home and School Committee - The Library Committee is a new feature of our Home and School Association. Mrs. Debbie Karalis and Mrs. Rebecca Wilson are the chairs. Mrs. Courtney Albright and Ms. Chris Gordon also sit on the committee. Please consider joining us.

Volunteer Training - On Wednesday, December 3, all library volunteers and those interested in learning more about the library are invited to a brief training and thank you at 9:00am following the All School Liturgy. Come to celebrate the beginning of the season of Advent and learn how things work at the St. John Vianney School Library.

Peace,

Do you have family or friends who would like to receive the Shamrock Weekly and electronic invitations to our school events?  Please click here to submit their email address.

School Conferences
School conferences will be held for K4 students on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 25.  Conferences for grades K5-8 will be held only on Tuesday, November 25.  Parents with students in grades K5-5 should have received an invitation to select a conference time through Sign Up Genius.  You may also follow the conference sign up link from here.  Parents with middle school students do not need an appointment time for conferences.  All middle school teachers will be in the cafeteria and will see parents on a first-come basis. This is counted as a school day so student attendance will be taken.

Lost and Found

Please take a few minutes during conferences to search the lost and found tables for items that your family members have been missing. Lost and found tables will be set up outside the cafeteria.  All unclaimed items will be donated.

Book Fair:  Parent Helpers Needed

The SJV book fair at Barnes and Noble is a wonderful school and community event, however, we would like to help parents with small children by having an extra set of eyes looking out for their safety.  Please contact Camille Fernandes at camillefernandes@hotmail.com if you would be willing and able to stand at the bottom of the escalator by the front entrance for a half-hour shift during the book fair. Shifts will start at 3:30 pm and go until 7:30 pm.  Parents who volunteer will be responsible to make sure young children are not lost from their parents and are not playing on the escalator.  Thank you for your valuable assistance!  Volunteers will be contacted no later than the Tuesday before the book fair with your assigned time.

Gratefully yours,

Bids for Kids Auction- Only 81 Days Away
 Saturday, February 14, 2015

Christmas is coming, but it is not too early to think about our school auction.  You can donate an item, send a telegram, volunteer in so many places and start getting your table together.  Check out the details below and don't forget to lend a lantern for our fabulous decorations.

Sponsorship

Successful auctions rely on the generosity of many individuals and businesses.  There are several levels of Sponsorship opportunities with a couple including a Masters Golf Tournament raffle ticket.  Financial contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated.  Please consider sponsoring our auction to benefit the long-term success of St. John Vianney School. This year's proceeds will be directed towards technology and school improvements.  Visit our auction website for more information and donation forms.  Contact Amy Lodes at 414-333-9963 with Sponsorship questions.

Item Donations

We are looking for individuals and businesses to donate items for our silent and live auction to be held that evening. Donors will receive recognition in the auction catalog, the school newsletter and the parish bulletin. If you would like more information you can contact Karen Parks at 262-490-4751 or karenparks221@gmail.com. You can also fill out an online donation form and drop off your item at the school or parish office.

Volunteers Needed

Several committees need additional volunteer support in many different capacities from now until the auction.  Check this committee document to see where you can lend a hand with your talents.  Some jobs can be done from home and are small child friendly, we have indicated that with an asterisk next to the dates for each committee.  Contact the chair directly if you are able to volunteer.  Not sure where your talents lie?  Contact Kim Tallmadge at 262-789-9392 and she can offer some guidance.

Sponsorship - Telegrams from Morocco

Send a personal note, thank you, or shout out to your favorite shamrock teacher, coach or team with a Telegram from Morocco and help support our auction.  Your personal message will be in the Bids for Kids auction catalog.  You can place your order online on the Bids for Kids Website or download the Telegrams from Morocco form

Bids Decorations

The Bids decoration committee needs your help!
We are looking for lanterns of all shapes and sizes to help transport our auction guests to Morocco on Saturday, February 14th.  Please email or call us if you might have some lanterns we could borrow.  We will coordinate their pick-up and return. Thanks in advance for your help!

Now is the time to think about getting a table together for Bids.  Talk amongst friends as you drop off for K4, at the end of the day at pick-up, or at basketball games. Tables seat 10 people and invitations will come home in early January.  You can always have a smaller group and ask to be seated with others from a specific grade.
