Weekly Highlights
Halloween brought lots of fun to SJV.  Thank you to all the parents who helped with the classroom parties.  The Fall Fest Concert was awesome, too!  The band, orchestra, shamrock choir and 4th grade choir provided great musical entertainment!
The seven students from Mrs. Schmitt's Discipleship class made 135 sandwiches and then boarded a bus to deliver them to The Guest House of Milwaukee.  The students were given a tour of The Guest House and told of the many programs it provides men in the inner city of Milwaukee.  Some things the students learned were that there are 86 men who stay there at any given day from 30 days to up to two years. There are counseling, medical, and educational opportunities as well as job training skills for the men.  The guests receive a hot meal every night and clothing and other necessities as needed thanks to over 600 volunteers. There are 50 paid staff, including case managers who support the men as they transition from life on the streets to independent living. The SJV students learned much from their experience and plan to keep up a relationship with The Guest House at least through the rest of their semester class.
November 4, 2014
Greetings!

Please come to school on Wednesday, November 12th to learn more about the three major initiatives we have undertaken for continuous growth and improvement at St. John Vianney School. We will share information about these initiatives in room 11, the Staff Room, at 9:00am after the All School Liturgy, and again at 7:00pm. We are having two sessions in order to reach the greatest number of interested individuals. At both sessions we will provide information about our initiatives in Catholic Identity, Differentiation and Writing. The sessions are only one hour long. Coffee, water and light refreshments will be served.

Report Cards

First quarter report cards will be sent home with your child on Wednesday, November 5. The report card is aligned with the curriculum of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. You will notice that instead of receiving one English/Language Arts (ELA) grade, the students will receive achievement grades in Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language. (Speaking/Listening is only graded at semester in K-5th grade.) If a single ELA grade was reported it would not provide students and parents with valuable feedback on strengths and challenges in areas requiring a very different skill set-a student may write well, but struggle with discussions or oral presentations. Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language are also unique in that they are important in content areas. While these ELA skills are primarily taught in reading and language arts classes, the goal is that they transfer to all areas.

Middle School Spelling News

Once the fundamentals of spelling are learned in the elementary and intermediate grades, it is considered best practice to continue to expand spelling skills within the context of disciplinary studies. Students learn the meaning and spelling of new words in their studies of religion, math, social studies, science, and literature. At St. John Vianney School, we are supplementing this effort by monitoring this skill to make sure that every student masters the spelling of words routinely used at the middle school level. Our middle school students are currently completing a pre-assessment that will allow us to gauge each student's current level of proficiency in spelling. For more information, please talk with Ms. Knippel, Mrs. Schroeder, Mrs. Goss, Mrs. Albright or Ms. Gordon at conferences later this month.

School Conferences
School conferences will be held for K4 students on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 25.  Conferences for grades K5-8 will be held only on Tuesday, November 25.  Parents with students in grades K5-5 should have received an invitation to select a conference time through Sign Up Genius.  You may also follow the conference sign up link from here.  Parents with middle school students do not need an appointment time for conferences.  All middle school teachers will be in the cafeteria and will see parents on a first-come basis. This is counted as a school day so student attendance will be taken.  Primary students, check with your teacher regarding student attendance at conferences.
2015-2016 Registration
Please keep an eye on your "snail mail" for your 2015-2016 registration papers.   Registration papers for the next school year were mailed and need to be returned by Monday, November 17.  Thank you for returning the form and fee so we can begin the budget planning process for the next school year.

Bids for Kids Auction- Only 102 Days Away
 Saturday, February 14, 2015

Sponsorship and Item Donations

Successful auctions rely on the generosity of many individuals and businesses.  There are several levels of Sponsorship opportunities with a couple including a Masters Golf Tournament raffle ticket.  Financial contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated.  Item donations in all shapes and sizes are also needed for an effective auction.  Our committee can arrange pick-up of your donation.  Please consider a Sponsorship or Item Donation to benefit the long term success of St. John Vianney School.  This year's proceeds will be directed towards technology and school improvements.

Visit our auction website for more information and donation forms.  Contact Amy Lodes at 414-333-9963 with Sponsorship questions or Karen Parks at 262-649-3745 for item donations.

Volunteers Needed

Several committees need additional volunteer support in many different capacities from now until the auction.  Check this committee document to see where you can lend a hand with your talents.  Some jobs can be done from home and are small child friendly, we have indicated that with an asterisk next to the dates for each committee.  Contact the chair directly if you are able to volunteer.  Not sure where your talents lie?  Contact Kim Tallmadge at 262-789-9392 and she can offer some guidance.

Bids Decorations

The Bids decoration committee needs your help!
We are looking for lanterns of all shapes and sizes to help transport our auction guests to Morocco on Saturday, February 14th.  Please email or call us if you might have some lanterns we could borrow.  We will coordinate their pick-up and return.  Thanks in advance for your help!
