A Message from the Head

Some time ago, the Director of Accreditation Services for AIMS asked me to chair the visiting committee to another progressive school in our region. Understanding that we had recently gone through our visit, and recognizing that this opportunity is somewhere between an honor and an expectation, I accepted. During evenings, weekends, and the occasional break in the action here at FCS, I spent time organizing our visit by scheduling meetings, dividing responsibilities, and reading an extensive self study. As always, the advance work made all of the difference.

Visiting another great school adds depth to my understanding of what a well run independent, progressive program can do for children. Our team visited every classroom, interviewed every administrator, ate lunch with children, and observed drop-off, pick up, and a fire drill. We held important conversations with representative Board members, parents, and the entire faculty. It is great to see other schools providing engaging lessons, differentiation, and personalized attention. All of us on the team return to our home schools with a deeper understanding of not just the school we visited, but each other's schools as well. Later this school year, Jenny Goodman will represent FCS on another AIMS visitation team, and she too will experience the privilege of this essential service that AIMS schools provide for each other. I am confident she too will benefit from this experience.

In Peace,

Larry

Building Project Updates

My Bulletin article last week seemed to prompt more questions than it answered! Currently, we expect final approval from the state Soil Conservation department within days and will then submit all previously approved components for final project sign offs from the county. Once approved, our contractor is prepared to begin work within 48 hours! While our Green and Growing Campaign has been very successful, we are still about $35,000 short of our goal. The Board is confident that we will reach our goal within the next few weeks. Our contractor and I have discussed plans and schedules for the project. Soon, they will install silt fencing and construction fencing to prevent children from entering the actual construction site. Shortly thereafter they will begin digging for utilities and foundation work. The superintendent for Scheibel Construction will be on-site every day and will meet with me to discuss the work and oversee all sub-contractors on the job. As you might expect, the safety of each child and our faculty is our shared (and primary) responsibility.

I plan to update you regularly once the work begins!

Philanthropy Matters

What does the Green and Growing Capital Fund mean for your family?

Our collective donations and the matching gift program are making this expansion possible. No tuition increase due to the project!

Won't you join the Board of Trustees, the Faculty/Staff, alumni families, friends of the school, and the 150+ families who have already given to the Capital Fund?

Your gift is eligible for tax deduction - you will be happy! Your gift will fund new spaces for expanded curriculum - you and your child will be happy! Your gift will be matched $1 for $1 - you, your child, and FCS will be happy!

We have 14 days to go until the Holiday break. Your gift or pledge really makes a difference as we try to raise the remaining $35,000 of our $1.4 million goal by December 21.

Thank you.

What does the Green and Growing Annual Giving Fund mean for your family?

Your gift enhances your child's education by funding materials and experiences in the classroom and beyond. Tuition is purposely set below the actual cost of operating the school so it remains affordable to as many families as possible. That is where the Annual Fund comes in, and why Annual Giving is so important.

Donations large and small are tax deductible, and most gratefully accepted.

...classroom materials, extra Financial Aid, art supplies, teacher training, technology, field trips, author visits, artists in residence, science lab materials...

Thank you.

Winter Break All-Day Ex-Day

Thank you to the parents that have made Ex-Day Winter Camp possible. Winter Camp will take place January 2nd, 3rd and 4th with Before and After care. Sign up early for a reduced rate!

Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm

The Next PA Meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at 7pm.  The main topic for discussion is Fall Fair fund disbursement.  This is a great opportunity to participate first hand in the Quaker decision making process!  Childcare will be provided.  To RSVP for childcare please send an email to FCS-PA@friendscommunityschool.org.

Did you know that the PA has a website?  Log on and find past meeting minutes, financials, and more!

Student-Run Coat and Boot Drive Continues

Naya and Louis Hutchinson continue to collect winter clothing for the homeless.

Here's what you can do:

  • Bring in spare coats that you do not use
  • Bring in snow, rain, hiking, or other warm boots that you do not use
  • There will be a bin in the lobby where you can drop the coats and boots off
  • Coats and boots will be collected November 19th - December 14th

Green Tip of the Week

Why "Green" Cleaning?

As you clean for the upcoming holidays, consider "Green" cleaning.

"Green" cleaning (cleaning your home with less-toxic products and substances) is important because it better protects your health and your children's health. Many common household cleaning products contain chemicals that can have adverse health effects. These chemicals can cause cancer, irritate the lungs, interfere with the functioning of the liver and other organs, irritate the skin, or affect the reproductive system. Studies indicate that most Americans have common household cleaning

chemicals in their blood and urine.
