holy spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts and kindle them in the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.  And you shall renew the face of the earth.

FROM OUR CHAIRMAN'S HEART

TDNG: 2013 and Beyond

After completing my first year serving you as chairman of the TDNG Secretariat, I express my gratitude for your support through prayers, sponsorship and service.

More and more I am reminded that there are only two things on this earth that are eternal, People and God's Word. Scripture tells us that people will spend eternity in either heaven or hell, and it tells us that the Word will never perish. Though Tres Dias is not a ministry of evangelism, it is a ministry that encourages and supports evangelism. Borrowing a paragraph from a newsletter article I wrote last year:

"I fully believe that God wants Christians to be Leaders and take Action to impact our Environments for Him now, more than ever. As Paul's writing in Romans 12 implies, a life of Piety (Giving one's whole self to God) is our reasonable response to the mercies of God. Taking positions of service/leadership in a Church where God's Scripture is foundational and where we are challenged to Study it and use it as the plumb line is important, because the church is a vital Christian Community in Action."

My prayer for our leadership in this community this year is that we will:

  • Base all of our decisions on Biblical Principals as we are led by Holy Spirit
  • Increase the accuracy of Secretariat and Weekend Team positions' job descriptions
  • Increase the efficiency of our processes while protecting useful practices
  • Be examples by being the leaders in our local churches that our mission says we seek to develop

By the way, when I used the word "leadership", I meant not only the members of the Secretariat, but every person who takes a position of leadership on a TDNG Team.

I pray for all of us to stay committed to His Kingdom Work in 2013 and beyond. May those who come behind us find us faithful!

De Colores, and,

In Christ's Lavish Love,

George

TDNG 2013 Budget

I wanted to let the community know that we have a working budget for TDNG for 2013. Each member of the Secretariat participated and provided their input into putting together and approving this budget. There was alot of work that went into this process, keeping in mind that one of our main objectives was to try to keep both our weekend and candidate fee rates at $105.

Thankfully, we were able to meet this objective and are leaving the fee at $105 for 2013.

The Secretariat will review our performance to this budget during this year and use the same planning process in the fall for next year's budget.

Lastly, I am proud of this overall effort, my fellow Secretariat members and the blessing to serve this community.

God Bless you all...
Bob Bartoldus
Treasurer for TDNG

SECRETARIAT POSITION OPEN

help wanted

The TDNG Secretariat is the body that oversees and supports the activities of the Tres Dias of North Georgia community.  The TDNG Secretariat has one position that came on Jan. 1, 2013 and another coming open on July 1, 2013.  These postions are:

Fourth Day (Omega Team) -  Open Jan. 1, 2013.  This is a "two person" position and can be filled by a couple or two single individuals.  We currently have one person interested in serving and need one more.

This position is responsible for planning and organizing Secuelas, scheduling and providing the resource table at Secuelas, preparing 4th Day packets for weekends, and participates in overall planning of Tres Dias activities and attends monthly Tres Dias Secretariat meetings.

Pre-Weekend (Alpha Team) - Coming open July 1, 2013.  This is a couple position.

This position encourages sponsorship by providing sponsorship materials at Secuelas and in the Newsletter. Distributes, receives and processes candidate applications and participates in overall planning of Tres Dias activities and attends monthly Tres Dias Secretariat meetings.

Secretariat service is a great way to invest in the community and pass the blessing of your TD weekend on to others.

If you have questions or are interested in serving, contact George Flury, TDNG Chairman, at Chairman@tdng.org

HISTORY OF TRES DIAS

Tres Dias traces its ancestry through Cursillo.  Cursillo had its beginnings amid the turmoil and destruction of civil warfare and of the Second World War, which left Spain with empty churches. Late in the 1940s, a sense of revival was stirring within the Roman Catholic Church. Small groups of friends in various Catholic action groups began to share their faith regularly. Pilgrimages were organized whereby men and women could rededicate their lives toward Christian ideals. Bishop Juan Hervas, who was active in action groups and renewal activities with the men on the island of Majorca, and Eduardo Bonin, who was involved with organizing pilgrimages, met through these sharing groups.

With a broadening vision of what these small sharing groups (reunion groups) could accomplish, weekly meetings produced periodic retreats where the reality of living a Christian life was intensely taught and experienced through support by reunion groups. These retreats became known as Cursillo de Christiandad, which means "short course in Christianity." Originally the retreats grew out of the reunion groups.

There were few men in the Church after the tragedy of war in Spain. One prime objective in the early years was to revitalize the church by bringing men back into the activities of the church.

The Cursillo movement was confined to Spanish speaking countries until the late 1950s when a group of men from the Spanish Air Force, who were in training in Texas, and were in a Reunion Group, conducted the first Cursillo in the United States. Among the Spanish-speaking people the movement began to spread across the United States. The first English speaking Cursillo was held in the early 1960s.

Protestants who attended the weekends, saw the need to make the experience available to other Protestants. This led to the development of the interdenominational Tres Dias. The first Tres Dias weekend was held in Newburgh, New York, November 2-5, 1972. Dave McManigal was its rector. He was a Protestant who had attended a Roman Catholic Cursillo and was instrumental in forming Tres Dias. That weekend, then as now, was open to all Christian traditions.

Starting from the Mid-Hudson Region/Mid-Hudson community in Newburgh/Poughkeepsie, New York, the movement spread rapidly. Pittsburgh was the second community; then Fairfield County, Connecticut, Northern New Jersey, Long Island, Maine, Central Connecticut, New Hampshire, and South Hudson.

In the Spring of 1979, with the encouragement of the Mid-Hudson Secretariat, John McKinney formed an ad hoc "National" secretariat with Jim Thornley, Anton Wellbrock, Gerry Hoernes, and Bob Decker. That group produced initial drafts of a "National" constitution and "Essentials of Tres Dias". All other communities were invited to participate and refine the drafts.

On July 11, 1980, at Poughkeepsie, NY, the constitution and essentials were ratified and adopted by all of the above listed communities. The Tres Dias organization was formed as a national organization. The secretariats of the communities were chartered as local secretariats. John McKinney was the first president. Subsequently, Tres Dias was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in New York state ... and was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.

In 1985 Tres Dias became an international organization when communities were chartered in Korea and Germany.

Tens of thousands of people have participated in Tres Dias weekends.

PALANCA GUIDELINES

Palanca is a powerful part of any weekend.  When sending palanca, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

-Rollo Room Palanca: Six (6) containers (one for each table) or 60 individual items.  (This will include some extra).

-Bed Palanca (Candidates): 42 individual items (one for each Candidate; please include extras). Individual bed Palanca for the Candidates is not allowed.

-Bed Palanca (Team): You may give individual bed Palanca to teammates or you may wish to give some to each team member (84; please include extras), please remember the Weekend is for the Candidates . . . think of them first.

-Kitchen Palanca (126): For the dining tables at meals.  Please include extras to allow for breakage, etc.  This Palanca should be given to the Head Kitchen to use as needed.  This Palanca is greatly appreciated by the Kitchen Chas.

-Banners: May be "theme" banners or a banner of your choice.  They should be no wider than three (3) feet and no longer than five (5) feet. Please give banners to the Palanca Cha at send-off with a list of those who helped create it and when to present it. All banners become the property of Tres Dias.

-Prayer Palanca: The community provides prayer throughout the entire 72-hour Weekend. Even though a person is not serving on the Weekend, he or she can be an essential part by praying for an hour. It is vitally important that prayer cover the whole Weekend. If someone calls you to pray for a Weekend on which you are not serving, please commit to pray for an hour and keep your commitment.

-Oven Palanca: Baked goods from the community provide desserts for the Weekend.  Someone may call you to help with baked goods or you may call the Secretariat Palanca Couple to volunteer.  Put baked goods in something that does not need to be returned, put your name on the package and take it to send-off.

Thank you for your commitment to pray, bake, love and give of yourself!

Each Weekend is a blessing to the candidates, team and community.  You may create a Palanca blessing by yourself, but also consider working with your reunion group or a friend to enjoy fellowship while you create your Palanca.

Remember what Palanca did for you!

CAMP OF COLORS

COC SIDEIn addition to normal maintenance activities, we had a major leak in the plumbing in the kitchen due to deteriorating pipe in the concrete floor.  This resulted in all the pipes in the kitchen being replaced.

Another sprayer has been acquired and is being installed over the kitchen sinks.

Based on rough estimates for renovating the dorm bathrooms, we intend to address one each year.  We are reviewing quotes for adding a bathroom for the Prayer Cha dorm.  The dorm bathroom work must be done when there are no weekends for several weeks, however, the Prayer Cha bathroom can be done at pretty much any time.

The golf cart has become very high maintenance.  If anyone has a lead on a good deal to buy or lease a replacement, contact Jon Newcomer (Chairman) at jon@jonwnewcomer.com.

We are currently reviewing proposed artwork for a new sign by the road.

We would still like to widen the walkway between the building and the chapel by two feet.  If you would like to submit a bid for this, contact Dave Vinke at dwvinke@gmail.com..

The Camp of Colors exists to be a place for Three Day Movements to hold weekends.  The Board is comprised of members from each community that holds weekends at the Camp as well as "at large" positions.  For information about the Board of Directors, the history of the Camp, weekend schedules, etc., visit www.campofcolors.org

TRES DIAS GUIDE FOR TEAM MEMBERS

The following continues a series of excerpts from The Tres Dias Guide for Team Members.

THE TALKS OF THE THREE DAYS

Each day begins with a meditation, given by clergy, which presents the direction of the day.  All rollos for the remainder of the day pursue that direction.  The final rollo is given by a lay member who has made the message of that day a personal living testimony of living the Christian faith.  This rollista demonstrates that the message is worthy and workable.

THE TALKS OF THE FIRST DAY

The talks of the first day begin the alternating of lay and clergy presentations, starting with the morning meditation, THE THREE GLANCES OF CHRIST, given by clergy.  This meditation begins the transition from introspection to a proclamation of Christ.  Its message is simple.  In the Gospels, three people met Jesus during His ministry and each responded to that meeting in a unique way.  On this first day of the Tres Dias, Christ is revealed to the candidates.

The first rollo, IDEALS, challenges the candidates to think about their own habits and life situations and prepares the way for the rest of the day - - - and even the rest of the Weekend.  Because ideals are basic to life and give direction to our very existence, we need to know what they are.  The candidates are left to consider the question "What are my ideals?"  They are also told how they might learn the answer (by contemplating the four questions regarding time, talents, treasures and thoughts).

The second rollo is GRACE.  Grace is the reality which makes the love of God in Jesus Christ tangible and experimential.  Grace provides a bridge by which a Christian answer can be given to the questions raised in the Ideals rollo.  It provides a foundation for the rest of the rollos,  These rollos clarify for the candidates that God's gracious offer to us in Jesus Christ can be received personally.  When the invitation is issued and the heart is receptive, then a live in grace may begin.

The third rollo speaks to THE CHURCH, the assembly of men and women, in all times and places, who are awakening to God's grace in Jesus Christ.  We are the Church, the people of God.  The church is Christ's men and women, laity and clergy working in partnership, who respond to the call of God to live together in grace.  The mission of the community is to be active in the world for Jesus' sake.

THE HOLY SPIRIT is the fourth rollo.  This rollo teaches that God empowers the church to fulfill its mission.  The Holy Spirit brings the church into being provides the gift of faith, and calls individuals into the church.  The Holy Spirit lives in the hearts of believers, guiding, comforting, and strengthening those who have received Jesus Christ into their lives.  It is The Holy Spirit who provides the gifts for building up the Body of Christ and for telling the world about God's love.  Palanca is introduced during or at the conclusion of this rollo.

What are the results of accepting Christ, of freely receiving God's grace and the gift of faith, and of being empowered by God's Spirit in the fellowship of the church?  The fifth rollo, Piety, presents and answer.  Piety manifests Christian qualities of life which are Christ-likeness, gratitude, freedom, and maturity.  It is a life in grace.  This rollo aims to awaken in the candidates, a desire to know Christ better, as they submit their weakness to His strength.  It should also clearly present answers to the questions raised in the first rollo of the day, Ideals.  More specifically, it should make clear that for the Christian, there are not multiples ideals, but one ideal; and that ideal is that a person must focus his/her life totally and completely toward God!

SECRETARIAT REMINDERS

reminder
The Secretariat would like to remind you that it is inappropriate to bring children to send-off, closing, serenade or other Tres Dias functions that are not "family affairs".

Further, only those that have attended a recognized 3-day weekend may attend Tres Dias functions.

We appreciate your understanding and compliance with these Tres Dias requirements.

-   -   -

Also a reminder to sponsors - Please urge your candidates to leave all cell phones & electronic devices at home so that they can block out the outside world & spend 3 days focusing totally on God and what He has in store for them.

  -   -   -

There has been a growing issue with sponsors bringing candidates to send-off that have not been called for the weekend by the Secretariat.  We would ask that, to avoid embarrassment to yourselves and your candidate, that you NOT bring anyone to attend a weekend that has not been called by the Secretariat.  If you have a candidate that can attend at the last minute, write "last minute" on the top of the application and the application will be handled accordingly.  For questions about this, or any area of sponsorship, contact the appropriate Secretariat member.
-   -   -
We would like to remind everyone in the community that names and addresses from weekend rosters, team lists, and or the TDNG database are for TDNG use only.  This information should not be used for solicitation, or any other purpose not related to TDNG business.

Each Rector who serves the community agrees to be responsible for the collection of the team fees for their weekend. In some cases, it has been interpreted that they would have to pay for any fees that were not paid by team members. This is not the intent. It is the Rector's responsibility to ensure that a full weekend fee is collected and paid to the Secretariat, but the fee is not his/her personal liability. Any shortfall should be taken care of by scholarships and remaining incidental fees.

If you have a need to inform the community of a ministry, prayer need, employment opportunity or need, we encourage you to use the Facebook page mentioned elsewhere in this  newsletter.

THE WORD

open bible

"First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings be made on behalf of all men.  For kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.  This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior."
