The Power of Talent
Issue: 2
February 2016
Hello!

Listening is an important skill when it comes to achieving success, both in your personal life and in the workplace. It can help you receive advice and insight from others you respect and admire, and benefit those who are given the ability to share what they have to say uninterrupted.

This month's newsletter offers multiple suggestions as to how and why listening is key to transforming good employees into great leaders. We also share recommendations to achieving a fulfilling career complete with a sense of gratification and accomplishment. Listening is one of these tips so we've included another article to remind you of the "power of listening and its ability to transform every area of our lives."

Here at Torchiana, we know successful organizations are created through strong teams comprised of individuals with robust skill sets. As always, our goal is to help you and your company grow through all facets of leadership development, executive coaching, career management and career transition/outplacement services. Please contact us if you'd like to discuss how Torchiana can assist with your career management needs.

All the Best,

Success is Not a Destination
By Jim Delia, OD Consultant, Trainer and Coach

Working in the Career Development field over many years, I've had countless discussions on what defines career success and how to know when you've arrived! Regardless of age or stage of career, here are the top 10 recommendations for creating a career that provides fulfillment, personal satisfaction and a sense of contribution.

  1. Listen to everyone's advice and insight and encourage them to give you more. Just be sure to rely on your own filter to determine what should stick and leave the rest aside if you think it doesn't fit you.
  2. Always be grateful for what you have and for what you don't have.
  3. When you look back, every decision and every turn you've made in your life will make sense. So don't worry too much about what's in front of you that you don't know.
  4. Be curious. It will help you be a better listener and will lead to stronger, more meaningful relationships.
  5. Start early and stay late.
  6. Manage your time and your workload so that you are able to ask other people, "How can I help?"
  7. Life is really all about relationships - with family, friends, and colleagues. Be a "giver" and not a "taker." Always make "deposits" and invest in those relationships if you want to have people around when you need them.
  8. The most successful people I know have these qualities:
    1. They are always learning.
    2. They connect with other people in an authentic way that makes them feel valued. This often means more listening than talking.
  9. Always spend part of your day dreaming and be bold enough to follow your dreams. Be careful to avoid being just a supporting actor. Life is a gift, an incredible opportunity to write, direct and star in your own movie.
  10. Have the courage to pay attention and discover who you are as you move through the different stages in life, because you will grow and change. Always respect and like yourself first. This will attract others to you.
Blog of the Month: Why Listening Matters - At Work and At Home

Recently, I had the privilege of hearing Colum McCann, author of, "Let the Great World Spin," and "TransAtlantic," speak at the Books for Lunch program, sponsored by The Seven Hills School in Cincinnati, Ohio. What was intended to be a simple outing with my colleagues became a surprising reminder of the power of listening and its ability to transform every area of our lives.

I can't think of anything kinder than to share these three inspiring lessons with you.
