Executive Onboarding: Positioning New Leaders for Success 
 

Did you know that 40% of new leaders fail within the first 18 months? 

 

At a turnover cost rate of three times that of a new leader's annual salary, this common trend is a budget nightmare, not to mention an unstable environment to build a new team and move a company forward. When leaders fail, employee productivity is lost and new ideas, structure and strategic intentions lose momentum in an ever-changing cycle of mistrust and unreliability. 

 

So why is this still happening? 

 

Too often, a proper process of onboarding a new leader is traded in for an ambitious attitude to hit the ground running. This ambition sets off several land mines for the team, including a lack of organization and comprehension, an unclear role, lackluster relationships and the inability to made adjustments where necessary. 

 

Prevention of this chaotic collision between a new leader and their team is necessary and includes important actions: 

  • Stakeholders must agree on the new leader's role and how success will be defined. 
  • The leader must possess clear knowledge of and be able to assimilate within the culture of the organization.  
  • The new leader must have a concise plan. 
  • The new leader must be able to request and act on continuous feedback regarding their behavior and leadership tactics.
