Competition -

Tastes of Tuscany - WIN a recipe book

You can learn so much about a culture and the lives of local people through its cuisine, or cucina as they say in Italy. Tuscany's rich heritage is especially rewarding and US-born Beth Elon captures its earthy enchantments in her wonderful book A Culinary Traveller in Tuscany: Exploring and Eating off the Beaten Track. Beth reveals a rural population that clings obstinately to a sensual way of life where food is still an art as well as a necessity. Her book is full of amazing, authentic recipes and fascinating details about the people and the culture that invented them. Great research for a Tuscan trip and a superb reminder of good times when you return home. We have one copy to give away: to enter the competition, click here.

Letter from Michael

I am freshly returned from The Wayfarers' Spring Meeting and First Aid training, which we hold every three years in the UK. All of our Walk Leaders and Managers are invited as well as the entire office teams from the UK, Italy and the US.

Walk Leader Alan Pinkney waves the Union Jack.

I always enjoy our gatherings enormously because they are a wonderful chance to bring everyone together to experience the enthusiasm and camaraderie that form such a vital part of The Wayfarers. This year was very special as it marked 30 years of Wayfaring.

The Wayfarers Founders: Christopher Hague, Michael West, Peter Clifford

To my great pleasure, both my co-founders, Christopher Hague and Peter Clifford were able to attend the convention. The Wayfarers was born from our friendship and our mutual love of hiking and you can see some amusing old photos of the three of us in the brochure.

As we enter our next 30 years, my commitment to The Wayfarers is stronger than ever. We will continue to be a small, independent travel company offering the very best walking vacations to a discerning circle interested in the merits of slow travel -  the chance to explore an area deeply and learn more about its people, culture, landscape and history all in convivial company.

I very much look forward to sharing the next adventure with you.

Best wishes

Michael West, Founder, The Wayfarers

Poetry and Motion in Wales

Stone Age cromlechs, sacred chapels, coastal paths starred with wildflowers, acres of blue, shining sea and dinner with the national poet Gillian Clarke - our Welsh Walk in Pembrokeshire is a complete showstopper.

Wales is part of the UK but has its own very distinct culture and scenery. Many people are bilingual and speak Welsh as well as English. Road signs have instructions in both languages.

For this Walk we visit the county of Pembrokeshire in the far south west of Wales, a land steeped in Celtic myth and history. This beautiful coastline was one of the earliest places that Christianity was established in Britain. Before then it was famed for its pagan druids. Around 5,000 years ago, the mighty bluestones of Stonehenge were quarried in Pembrokeshire and transported hundreds of miles to their resting place in Wiltshire - to this day archaeologists debate how the stones were actually moved.

We visit the hills where the bluestones were quarried and hike the rolling moors roamed by Welsh ponies, a unique breed and Britain's prettiest wild pony.

Don't miss this treat of a Walk - find out more on the website or call us at 1-800-249-4620 (US & Canada).

Special addition to Tuscany & Umbria

We have a very special guest joining us on the Tuscany & Umbria Walk this June.

Stephen Banks, a professional photographer and digital expert who works with our UK-based PR company, will be walking with us to take photos for our brochure, website and social media channels.

Stephen has won several photography awards and had his work featured in leading UK newspapers, magazines, books and calendars. He specializes particularly in timelapse video and long exposure nighttime shots showing the stars in the landscape. You can watch the video he made of Bridport in Dorset, near the Wayfarers HQ, here:

Stephen will be available throughout the Walk to coach guests in all aspects of digital photography and social media techniques. We still have a few places left on the Walk, so contact us straight away if you are interested.

Walk in the birthplace of the Renaissance

The Italian Renaissance was born from the rich landscape of Tuscany - its green and golden hills, groves of cypress and olive trees, brilliant light and exquisite cities. Come and stroll through the spring landscape that Botticelli painted so vividly in the Primavera, also know as Allegory of Spring.

From this rich earth comes the acclaimed cuisine of Tuscany, one of the world's healthiest. On our Walk you will feast on olive oil, Tuscan beans, vegetables, fish, pasta, crostini, risotto, handmade cheeses, succulent beef and wild boar. Hearty, honest and subtle, the food, like the country, is a revelation.

We walk in a UNESCO world heritage site, explore the medieval treasures of Montalcino in the heart of the Brunello wine country, enjoy a wine tasting at an organic farm and delight in a lesson about Tuscan cooking. Contact us as soon as possible for the June Walk as bookings close soon.
