| Memorable moments - the strong Italian man |
|
Lunch at a beautiful restaurant on the Amalfi coast, overlooking the Mediterranean sea - but where is the walk manager? Everyone's having a great time, but they are wondering where this big, strong man has got to... When he appears he's terribly apologetic because he has dirt on his shirt - but why?
Patricia's been on 12 walks with The Wayfarers, and in this video recalls one of those unexpected moments that makes a vacation memorable.
You can watch Patricia's video here, or head over to our Facebook page to watch more short clips of Wayfarers' favorite moments.

Game of Thrones is the most popular TV show in the world right now and is mainly filmed in Northern Ireland. We hike several of the stunning locations, including the North Coast close to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. The rugged coastline, historic castles and amazing scenery make it a perfect setting for the medieval fantasy epic. See our website for more details of our Northern Ireland Walk.

So we were delighted to find this lovely tea towel made by Ulster Weavers in Irish linen with the blessing on it and we have two to give away in this month's competition. Click here to enter. |

Greetings!
This year sees the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings on the coast of Normandy in France, as well as the centenary of the start of the First World War in Europe.
Our Brittany and Normandy Walk, which takes place close to the actual D-Day anniversary itself on 6 June, takes you to the very beaches where the US troops landed and includes a tour of the associated memorials.
At the end of June, there is a chance to step further back in time to a First World War battlefield on our Venice and the Veneto Walk.
Both these Walks provide a memorable and moving insight into the two conflicts that rocked the 20th century. Encountering them as part of the larger picture of a country's history and culture helps us to understand and to empathise with those who were caught up in these great struggles. Members of your family might have been involved in one or both of the wars and our Normandy Walk in particular offers a chance to pay a personal tribute.
This June offers a unique occasion to visit Normandy and celebrate liberty. Local people have planned a host of events, commemorations and displays. You may choose to attend the official celebrations and then join us on our Walk.
Do get in touch if you would like to find out more. I look forward to welcoming you to Normandy.
Best wishes
Michael West,
Founder, The Wayfarers.

A moving day at the Normandy Landings |
|
As part of our Brittany and Normandy Walk, we spend a full day on a fascinating and thought-provoking tour of the famous and infamous Normandy beaches, scene of the D-Day Landings. We visit St Mere Eglise, scene of the largest airborne night assault in history (800 planes) and center of US 82nd Airborne operations; the German cemetery at La Cambe and the Pointe du Hoc where the battery has been left, as a memorial, as it was on D-Day.

After lunch, we pass by Omaha Beach and the US Cemetery, with time to reflect.
Look how many there are.
Look how young they are.
They died for your freedom.
Hold back your tears and be silent.

A glimpse of WWI amid mountain beauty
|
|
Our Walk in the Italian Dolomite Mountains includes an optional visit to the open-air First World War Museum near Cortina, the most extensive of its kind in the world.
Amid these beautiful mountains, an incredible battle was waged between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. The land at the heart of the battle has since been declared an open-air museum of nearly two miles in radius. Seeing the area on foot and close up is the perfect way to gain deeper insights into the war that raged in this part of Europe 100 years ago.
The breaktaking scenery makes an emotive setting for the story of tragedy and destruction that occurred here. We have time to reflect on the human cost before taking the cable car back down the mountain to our hotel.

Garden discovery in Cornwall
|
 |
 |
Cornwall's sheltered, sunny creeks and coves provide a unique micro-climate ideal for creating spectacular gardens. No wonder that in the Victorian era, the great houses of Trebah and Heligan created gardens filled with exotic plants sourced from across the British Empire.

As the Empire faded, so the gardens fell into neglect and disrepair, overgrown with weeds, seemingly lost forever. But in modern times the balmy climate of South West England attracted new owners who have replanted and restored these lost gems.
Our Cornwall Walk takes us to the best of these. We discover for ourselves the enchanted Lost Gardens of Heligan and the world-famous Trebah Gardens.

On our way we encounter classic Cornish coasts and cliffs, see the settings for Daphne DuMaurier's novels Rebecca and Frenchman's Creek, and reward ourselves with a traditional Cornish cream tea of scones, clotted Cornish cream, strawberry jelly and a pot of tea.
See our website for more details of the May departure.

France and Spain in one Walk
|
 |
 |
|
We hike in both France and Spain on our Walk amid the untamed beauty of the Pays Basque. On one side lie dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean, on the other the majestic peaks of the Pyrenees.
The unique Basque country has kept its superb natural environment unspoiled and jealously guarded by its proud inhabitants.

The coastal paths meander beside endless stretches of golden sand, in sight of the Atlantic surf. The untamed beauty of this wild coast is interspersed with sophisticated Basque cities with their heady mix of port and beach life. On the mountainside, the pretty villages and farms nestle in green valleys surrounded by open slopes and a semi-wild landscape.
The origins of the Basques remain shrouded in mystery but the songs, festivals, local sport, distinctive regional cuisine and folklore reveal a unique history and strong cultural identity where they still speak the oldest living language in Europe.
