Memorable meals

Our Amalfi Coast Walk includes memorable meals in very special locations. One of these is at a rustic family restaurant above Positano.

We sit on a wooden terrace between a vegetable garden and olive trees with stunning views of Positano below.

The meal begins with mixed starters of juicy buffalo mozzarella, tasty tomatoes, beans, chickpeas and eggplant parmigiana.

Then Mama prepares homemade pasta, including ravioli, pasta with provola, gnocchi.

For dessert, there's an incredible lemon cream baba rum cake. It's heaven!

We run them consecutively, giving you the option of doing both if you wish - and of course there's a special deal if you do choose both. Book both trips back-to-back and we will include transportation between Walks and a night in magical Cefalu.

Letter from Michael

Let me take you on a trip forward in time to Italy in May. The weather is a balmy 72 degrees, the sun shines warmly but not too hot, cooling breezes rise from the azure Mediterranean Sea and the path leads on through an inviting olive grove to where our table lies laden with local delicacies.

This is no dream - it's highly attainable on our Amalfi Coast or Eastern Sicily Walks this spring. You could be there. Did you know that spring is the very best time to see Sicily? The landscape is green and splashed with colorful wildflowers. It may even be warm enough to swim in the sea.

Meanwhile, on our Amalfi Walk, the gorgeous island of Capri has woken into its spring splendour. The lemon trees will be showing their powerfully sweet-scented blossom and the sea caves we visit by boat are filled with sparkling blue water.

Need I say more? Our spring Walks offer some of the richest jewels in our brochure. I hope you will experience them for yourself.

Best wishes

Sunny Sicily and Etna's smouldering heart

Exploring on foot is the key to understanding and appreciating Sicily's ancient treasures and natural riches. Walking brings you so much closer to the land and the people. It gives you time to absorb one of Europe's most fascinating destinations.

We follow shepherds' paths and mule tracks through the Pantalica Nature Reserve with its extraordinary succession of gorges and canyons. After enjoying lunch in a local farmhouse, we head north to lovely Taormina with its Ancient Greek ampitheatre overlooking the Ionian Sea.

No trip to Eastern Sicily would be complete without a hike on the flanks of spectacular Mount Etna, the active volcano that forms the island's glowing heart. In Greek mythology, the deadly monster Typhon was trapped under Etna by Zeus, the king of gods, and its fiery depths were said to be home to the forges of Hephaestus.

We take a detour around these more dangerous regions and instead explore the volcano's fertile slopes. Here the lava-rich soil nurtures many excellent vineyards whose wine we sample before returning to our lovely hotel in beautiful Taormina.

There's so much more to this Walk than a short newsletter can do justice to. Read the full itinerary on our website. Our Walk in Western Sicily is equally fascinating and we have a special deal for guests who book both Walks back-to-back.

Ways to stay stylish on the Amalfi Coast

Italians have long been regarded as the most fashion-conscious of all Europeans and nowhere is more glamorous than the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri.

But don't despair, a walking holiday need not mean abandoning style for the week. Everyone wears hiking boots for trekking the coastal paths during the day and in the evening, ladies can slip into a simple cotton dress and a pair of flat heels to get the look. Gentlemen will be equally at ease in a pair of linen trousers and an open-necked shirt. In May the weather will be warm enough in the evenings to enjoy wearing summer clothes with maybe just a light cardigan.

When Jackie Kennedy holidayed here in the 1960s she lived in a pair of flat Capri sandals with laces. You can buy these at many of the small shops along the coastline and a pair makes a great change after spending the day in hiking boots. To complete the Positano look, women should opt for a pair of diva sunglasses and a loosely woven straw bag, complete with little bells.

While on the Amalfi Coast, the more daring will able to purchase Positano's pezze: thin and brightly colored garments made from linen and gauze which you could only possibly get away with wearing in Positano (or on a beach), according to the Amalfi Coast insiders' guide www.positano.com
