Letter from Michael

Happy New Year! With both sides of the Atlantic enduring record-breaking bad weather, I hope that you and your family are keeping safe and warm.

While the US suffers the deep freeze, here in England we have been battling against weeks of record storms, floods and tidal surges. The conditions have been testing, but spectacular. Massive waves along the coasts of Cornwall and Brittany, France, have attracted top surfers from across the world, drawn by the amazing conditions. We lesser mortals have been keeping firmly on shore, but taking time to admire the breathtaking savage beauty of Nature.

In such hostile conditions, my thoughts turn longingly to memories of the gentle, sun-warmed Mediterranean in summer. I think of narrow paths winding alongside azure seas, bursts of colour from wild flowers, the glorious scent of cistus and broom, houses with low verandas hung with frilly grapevines and purple bougainvillea, tables laid with fresh delicacies and the sound of happy laughter echoing through the olive groves.

The Wayfarers roam through some of the loveliest parts of the Med. We have Walks in Italy, Sicily, Croatia and Provence in the South of France. I've included a tempting selection of Italian highlights in this newsletter and hope you will be joining us on one of them.

Best wishes

Memories of magical Positano

When Australian Susi Wardrop met a handsome Italian lawyer in Positano her life took off in a totally unexpected direction. They married, had two children, and spent the next 10 years living on the Amalfi coast, building a stunningly beautiful home from the ruins of an ancient building.

Positano is a picture-postcard little village perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the Mediterranean. Brightly colored houses nestle one on top of the other, flowers grow in profusion, hotels and villas look out to sea. It was the setting for Patricia Highsmith's famous novel, 'The Talented Mr Ripley', and has attracted scores of writers and artists.

While Susi was learning to adapt to a new and different lifestyle, Positano was changing from a small and sleepy fishing village to an international resort. She describes those amazing years in her entertaining new book, 'Positano - Life on the Amalfi Coast'.

Susi reveals the area's culture and customs, the welcoming friendliness of the local people, the wonderful food and the traditional way of life in the area's remote mountain villages. She also describes the complications involved in building a house, bringing up two children and coping with language problems.

Susi says: 'I love to go back and visit, meet my old friends, and just enjoy one of the most magical places I know.'

You can explore the best of Positano, the Amalfi Coast and the enchanting Isle of Capri with the Wayfarers this May or October. See the website for details.

Venice - more than the city

The marvelous, sea-washed city of Venice is the crowning pearl of a whole region of Italy. Called The Veneto, this area stretches from Venice up to the foothills of the spectacular Dolomite Mountains.

This region has amazing Renaissance architectural masterpieces, charming medieval towns, famous cheeses and wines and unspoiled scenery of wooded limestone hills.

Less well known are the historic mountain battlefields from the First World War, complete with trenches, fortifications and bomb shelters, remnants of the Battle of Asiago in 1916. We hike through the battle area on our Walk in Venice and the Veneto, and it provides a fascinating glimpse of military history.

Our Walk culminates, of course, in La Serenissima herself, where we explore secret places away from the crowds under the expert leadership of a local guide. See our website for more details of this and other Italian Walks.

Sicily - two Walks special

Glorious weather, traditional culture, amazing Classical sites, wilderness reserves and incredible food - Sicily has everything.

We have two Walks in Sicily, one in the east and one in the west of this beautiful island. We run them consecutively, giving you the option of doing both if you wish - and of course there's a special deal if you do choose both. Book both trips back-to-back and we will include transportation between Walks and a night in magical Cefalu.

See the website for details.
