Competition - Desert Heart Blue Moon Late Harvest Riesling 2011
|
|
In celebration of our love of New Zealand we are offering a luscious bottle of Desert Heart Blue Moon Late Harvest Riesling 2011 (375 ml).
Made in the Central Otago wine region of New Zealand's South Island, this dessert wine has fragrant, lifted aromas of mandarin, orange blossom, white peach and nectarine and exquisite tastes of apricot, marmalade and honey on the palate. A concentrated intense full bodied wine with tremendous tension between acidity and sweetness, culminating in a lingering finish.
We visit the Otago region on our New Zealand South Island Walk, and see locations where Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed.

Greetings!
Time and time again you tell us that Wayfarers' Walk Leaders are the best. Resourceful, knowledgeable and fun they walk alongside you, look after you, share the camaraderie of the trail and reveal hidden secrets of the places we visit. In the evening they raise a glass with you, relive the highlights of the day and whet your appetite for the morrow. In short, they are founts of wisdom who become friends.
We choose our Walk Leaders very carefully, seeking out people with a strong personal connection to the countries where we walk. Most leaders work exclusively with us, dedicating themselves to the handful of Walks they conduct every year. This keeps them fresh and inspired, always enthusiastic and ever alert to new sights and details.
Our most far-flung Walk Leaders are John Knox in New Zealand and Claudio Portal and local guide Diego de Angelis in Argentinian Patagonia. John has been leading Wayfarers' New Zealand Walks for over ten years and is an established star. Claudio and Diego are newer to the Wayfarers but have already garnered rave reviews from our guests. You can read more about them in this newsletter.
As an added incentive, we are offering a discounted rate on both these Walks - see the website for details.
Finally, as the seasons turn and with the Fall almost upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere, may I remind you of the exquisite pleasures of our Burgundy Walk where you stay on a luxury river barge. This really is a true gourmet's dream. Your appetite is sharpened with amazingly beautiful Walks through mellow vineyards before our private chef prepares fine French cuisine on board our barge every evening. What a treat!
Very best wishes
Michael West,
Founder, The Wayfarers.

Our New Zealand Walk Leader: 'The Legend' |
 |
 |
|
'John Knox is an intelligent, caring and kind individual with a great sense of humor and a depth of knowledge about New Zealand culture, geography, flora and fauna. He is one of the best guides we have ever had on any guided trip.'
'John was exceptional - totally committed to providing the perfect walking experience. He is full of great information, is easy-going and calm and very good-natured.'
'I had heard of the "legend" of John Knox and it is all true!'
That's what Wayfarers say about John, our Walk Leader in New Zealand. But who is the man behind the 'legend'?
John has been leading our Walks for over ten years. Before this, he worked extensively in Australian National Parks and eco resorts before returning to New Zealand in 1995 to form his own eco-tourism company.

John has a passion for the New Zealand outdoors and its distinctive flora and fauna. He enjoys nothing more than sharing the beauty and unique qualities of his country with Wayfarers' groups and he possesses a wealth of knowledge about natural history and the geological formation of the landscape.
In his spare time, John is actively involved in river conservation work for the Styx Living Laboratory, which he chairs. Music is his other great interest and he loves playing his guitar or violin.
John aims to show you New Zealand's true spirit of place and the warm welcome offered by its people.
See our website for more details of the New Zealand Walk and special rate booking offer.

Our Patagonia Guides: Fantastic cook and mountain expert
|
 |
 |
|
We are lucky to have two great guides working with us in Patagonia. Claudio Portal is our Walk Leader while Diego de Angelis is our local guide in El Chalten.
Claudio is a native of Argentina, but he has lived in many countries including England, Greece, France and his family's native Italy. Not surprisingly, he has travelled extensively and speaks many languages. A highly experienced guide, Claudio has led trips in South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. He's also an expert chef and has a great love of food and wine. His party piece is cooking his own excellent handmade pasta for your delectation.
Diego is also an experienced guide and mountaineer who owns his own expedition company based in El Chalten. As a local guide for The Wayfarers, Diego brings a unique understanding of the mountains we see on our walks and a high level of expertise on the remoter trails of the Park.

Claudio and Diego know and love Patagonia from the inside out. Their knowledge and warmth illuminates the whole trip and ensures that your memories of this remote and beautiful place will be filled with camaraderie and good fellowship.
Here's some feedback from a couple of Wayfarers who walked with them in Patagonia earlier this year:
'Claudio is excellent and one of the best guides/leaders I have ever walked with.'
'I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. It is a trip of a lifetime.'

| Indulge in moveable feasts in Burgundy this Fall |
 |
 |
|
Imagine cruising by luxury river barge through the glorious French countryside glowing with Fall colours. You dine on gourmet cuisine and alight at picturesque places to stroll through rich, ancient vineyards, admire Renaissance châteaux, and explore wooded hills and lush valleys.
This 'moveable feast' is Burgundy experienced The Wayfarers' way. Your accommodation for the week's walking comes with you, so there's no need to change hotels. We stay on board La Belle Epoque, a state-of-the-art hotel barge, designed with both elegance and passenger comfort in mind. The entire interior is air conditioned, including the wood panelled saloon, dining room and spacious cabins. We offer a choice of twin or double beds and all cabins have marble en-suite facilities. (A single cabin is also available).

Fine French cuisine is prepared on board by our personal chef and every meal is accompanied by a different regional wine, making this trip a gourmet's delight and an education in the finer arts of living.
La Belle Epoque is a historic river craft, originally built in 1930 to carry timber on the French and Belgium waterways. In 1995 she was fully restored and converted into one of the very best French hotel barge. We love her and think you will too.
We have a few places left on our Barging in Burgundy Walk this October. See the website for more details.
