"Duke Energy looks forward to welcoming SCANPO to our SC headquarters city in March. At Duke Energy, we believe the decisions we make today will determine our company's long-term prospects. One of those decisions is to work through the Duke Energy Foundation to partner with local nonprofits to ensure our communities have the resources they need to serve - now and well into the future."

Exciting news! The third reading passed the Senate on Wednesday, February 20th. The bill is headed to the House of Representatives for the first reading.

The first bill ( S.213), lays out the conditions under which raffles can be operated, and goes into effect only is the constitutional amendment is passed. Both pieces of legislation must be enacted before nonprofit organizations can legally operate a raffle for charitable purposes. The other bill ( S.239), seeks to change the state constitution, which currently only allows the state to conduct lotteries, to allow the General Assembly to legalize raffles for charitable purposes. It does not legalize any other kind of lottery. If passed, this would require a public referendum in Fall 2014 before the constitution can be changed.

Now is the time to contact your South Carolina State Representatives and let them know that raffles will help nonprofits raise funds without advise impact. Contact us to find out how you can help.

Madeleine speaks to Columbia Area GP&BP attendees at Columbia Chamber of Commerce

Dear Nonprofit Colleagues,

Have you been fortunate enough to attend the recent Using Guiding Principles & Best Practices Workshops? The turnouts for these events are strong. The attendees enjoy lively discussions and thought provoking questions regarding their own nonprofit organizations.

If you were a workshop attendee, did you go back to your shop and share the initial self-assessment worksheet with your colleagues? Has your organization adopted any of principles or practices you learned about?

Friday morning at the Summit join moderator Sandra Chavez for "Building Upon Best Practices To Achieve Excellence" Session to build upon the good work you have started. Sandra is the co-editor of the GP&BP and she will be joined by a dynamic panel comprised of winners of the Hardwick Award for Nonprofit Excellence.
