Incorporating fundraising best practices from her vast experience plus guidelines from SC chapters of Association of Fundraising Professionals and SCANPO, she is sure to inspire and motivate us to create exceptional development shops.

Nonprofit Finance Fund's(NFF) anonymous nonprofit survey asks about your organization's financial & management challenges and opportunities in 2012 and 2013. It takes only 10-15 minutes to fill out, and the results will be used to generate widespread awareness of nonprofits' experiences as they work hard to serve their communities.
Now in its fifth year, NFF's nation-wide survey provides robust data studied in detail by dozens of funders and is featured prominently in leading publications (see previous results here). By filling out the survey, you help inform foundations, the media, government and other nonprofits about the state of the sector and showcase the smart decisions nonprofits are making to cope and adapt in difficult times.

Dear Nonprofit Colleagues,
We know the saying, "If you aren't at the table, you're on the table."
So, last week, SCANPO's Board and dedicated Advocacy Committee teamed up with UWASC and United Way leaders from across the state to invite our legislative leaders to the table - a table loaded with Doc's BBQ that is. Nearly 40 legislators plus many staff joined us for lunch and hear about issues important to the sector.
It was a great day, with much progress made in gaining support for the new Nonprofit Raffles for Charitable Purposes.
We must quit allowing unwitting citizens attempting to do good for their communities to be subject to substantial embarrassment and wasting of nonprofit dollars when raffles must be cancelled, at the least, and, at the worst, penalties and criminal charges should law enforcement officials follow the laws on the books.
Now is the time to contact your legislators and let them know this new bill will help nonprofits raise funds without adverse impact. Contact us to find out how you can help.
Yours in Service,
Madeleine McGee SCANPO President madeleine@scanpo.org

Bring AmeriCorps to Your Community
The United Way Association of South Carolina and AmeriCorps currently provide nearly $2 million in AmeriCorps funding to communities across South Carolina. AmeriCorps members 500 strong are engaged in volunteer activities designed to help address unmet needs and improve the quality of life for all citizens in our state. In the coming years, we will be working hard to increase the number and scope of our AmeriCorps programs in order to make a significant and positive impact on lives and communities in our state. You and your community can be a part of this growing movement.
The 2013-14 Notice of Funding Opportunity is available here. For questions regarding the AmeriCorps grant application process, contact Emily Thompson

If I had to come up with an opening sentence that would be ensure that no one reads this post, I could do no better than to start with a mention of the Fiscal Cliff negotiations.

But that's exactly what I'm going to do, because something important came out of the standoff in Washington and the last-minute agreement on January 1st. A rather major - if short-term - opportunity emerged for donors and nonprofits alike.
And I ask you to please excuse the accounting technicalities as I dive into some tax and gift planning talk.
Here's the situation: Some high-net-worth individuals have what are often called "overfunded IRA accounts" - that is, they have a lot of money in their retirement funds, but because they are very wealthy they don't need to take an annual distribution in order to support themselves.
