10 DAYS OF GIVING
Holiday Food & Toy Drive
Every week Bay Athletic Club has nearly 2,000 check-ins.  Imagine the IMPACT that would make if every person brought just one donation!

Today, through Saturday, December 10th we will be accepting non-perishable food items and toys at Bay Athletic Club.  The food items will go to the Salvation Army to feed hungry families in our area and the toys benefit the Vietnam Veterans Toys for Kids annual drive.  All of the toys will stay local! Don't forget older kids, especially boys!
Healthy Recipe by Kelly!

This recipe was adapted from a salad that I had at a holiday party a few years ago. I remember the flavors were bright, succulent lemon, a heady cheese paired with a satisfying crunch of nut and crispy vegetables. I was surprised to learn one of the main ingredients was Brussels sprouts. I thought I didn't care for the little cabbages! However, I am delighted to know that I simply didn't care for overcooked and therefore extra bitter sprouts encountered in years past. I encourage you to take some of the stress out of a holiday dinner and try this delectable salad that is a healthful as it is easy to prepare a day before the family come through the door. Perhaps you can convert one of your family members to a sprout eater as well.

Kale Brussel Sprout Salad

Ingredients:

- cup olive oil

-1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

-2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

-1 tablespoon minced shallot

-1 small garlic clove, finely grated

-1/4 teaspoon kosher salt plus more for seasoning

-Freshly ground black pepper

-1 large bunch of Tuscan kale (dark, not curly) center stem discarded, leaves thinly sliced

-12 ounces brussels sprouts, trimmed, finely shredded with a knife

-1/3 cup walnuts, chopped

- cup shaved pecorino

Preparation:

Combine lemon juice, Dijon mustard, shallot, garlic, 1/2 tsp. salt, and a pinch of pepper in a small bowl. Stir to blend; set aside to let flavors meld. Mix thinly sliced kale and shredded brussels sprouts in a large bowl.

Slowly whisk olive oil in cup into lemon-juice mixture. Season dressing to taste with salt and pepper.Add dressing and cheese to kale mixture; toss to coat. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Garnish with walnuts.

DO AHEAD Dressing, kale mixture can be prepared a day ahead. Cover dressing and kale mixture separately and chill.

Nutrition Maintenance

Already "tuned up" your nutrition with Precision Nutrition coach Rick Houchin but still want accountability and support? Try our maintenance program.  Here's what two recent participants had to say:

"I needed to talk with someone who wasn't going to just tell me what to do, but help me understand why the choices I was making were either helping or hurting me.  The one on one conversation was key.  It was more than an accountability group, it was talking to an educated friend."--Michelle McEwen

"I finally feel in control of my nutrition but sometimes I need that accountability because it can still be tough. Being able to sit down with Rick helps.  My motivation was always renewed after our meetings.  He helps me set new goals and seek progress, not perfection."--Traci Boyle

The Nutrition Maintenance program is for Tune Up graduates.  It includes:
-two 30 minute nutrition counseling sessions
-regular accountability via text or email to keep you on track
Cost is $50.

Bay Athletic Club team members Lara Torres and Kelsey Hall fired up a Lincoln Elementary classroom!  They laughed, jumped, stretched and talked about the importance of being active and fueling your body with healthy foods.

BAC Team member and Yoga Instructor Amy Schultz headed over to Besser Elementary school to show the preschoolers how much fun Yoga is! They also learned that exercise makes them faster, stronger, smarter and happier!

December 2014
Yes, Health and Happiness for All.

I know that fitness transforms lives. It changed my life from an overweight college student to a happy mom and health club owner. It changed my dad's life from a stressed-out attorney with high cholesterol, an expanded waistline and heart disease to a healthy grandfather of nine. But it wasn't enough for me to see it in my own family. I wanted to build a team of people to help me spread it like wildfire across our community...and we have!  But here is the secret. All of our success stems from our members' successes. The business is about YOU, not us. We celebrate YOUR stories every week. YOU matter above all.  YOUR stories are unique, each and every one. From weight loss to fighting disease to battling insecurity...you are winning.

Thousands of brave people have stepped into a better future at BAC. It gives me goosebumps to look inside our members' lives at the healing power of fitness. Take a look.

We recently featured a 20-year old college student, Ryan Carriveau, who found confidence and muscle at Bay Athletic Club. He was a self-decsribed "shy and awkward" young man who used fitness to change his attitude and body. He is a different person today.

We also featured Stacy Bauer, 44, who has faced a lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). She was diagnosed at age 4. Some people would throw in the towel and blame their genetics or their bad luck. Stacy hit a low point a year ago that inspired her to take action.

At her annual physical at the doctor's office, she learned she was borderline diabetic and in need of high blood pressure medicine. Her joints hurt and everything seemed to be an effort. She was obese and tired all the time. Her lung function was declining, causing her to have frequent pneumonia.

"I realized I was losing my lifelong battle with CF, she said." "And I was adding other health issues to an already tough battle for energy."

Stacy joined a program at Bay Athletic Club and over the past year has lost 40 pounds, dozens of inches, has cut back on her medications, dropped her blood pressure and is no longer at risk for diabetes. Wow. That is a mouthful of results from a lot of work and a lot of support.

She struggled up the staircase last year and ran the 5K Turkey Trot this year.
Talk about a story of transformation.

Congrats Ryan, Stacy and all who have found healing and happiness at BAC.
Cheers to an amazing 2014.

Sincerely ,
Trina Gray, Owner Bay Athletic Club
PS - Our 10 Days of Giving are in full swing from Dec 1 - Dec 10. We are SO COMMITTED to creating a happy community that we DOUBLE all of your donations each year. When our members donate 200 cans of food, we match it. When our members donate 200 gifts, we match it.  Please give. Teach your children and grandchildren that it takes a whole village to help. All donations stay local. **Older kids often get overlooked.** Consider hats, mittens, scarves, basketballs, volleyballs, even gift cards to local stores for them to use.

When you bring in YOUR donation, let us snap a picture for Facebook. We'll add #doubleyourdonation #bayathleticclub to help spread the word!
