When springtime rolls around, my senses are immersed in the beauty that nature has wrought, and I appreciate that this is a season of transformation. For many of us, this is also time for that annual ritual of spring cleaning.

As you're getting up-close and personal with your home, you may decide this is the perfect time to give your rooms a more stylish look. Consider teaming with a design professional to turn your dreams into reality. In our Feature Article we explain the benefits of working with design professionals. Our Feature Project highlights a project we recently completed on a gorgeous waterfront home in Solomons Island.

Enjoy the beauty of the season!

Did You Know...

...According to a recent Gallup poll, over 60% of U.S. households own pets. Of those homes, most consider their pets to be members of the family. With those lovable pets comes muddy paw prints on the floors and rugs, scratching of furniture, fur shedding and toys laying around. No need to stress! We can help you select fabrics and rugs that are durable and will withstand the rigors of a pet, as well as camouflage the fur and dirt. We can even custom design and make a dog or cat bed for your furry family member. So let your home go to the dogs (or cats)!

This post is in loving memory of Bailey Blunt, June 2006 - December 2015.

Room Design and Furnishings by Designer Doug Richard of D. Richard Designs
Custom Window Treatments by Sew Beautiful

Teaming with the talented designer, Doug Richard, we recently completed custom window treatments for this gorgeous waterfront home in Solomons Island. Doug beautifully transformed every room with colors, fabrics, furnishings and accessories that connect with the water and landscape beyond the windows. Featured above are the family room, kitchen/breakfast area and the game room.  In each space, the new panels, top treatments and shades enhance the architecture of the room while framing the spectacular view.

When designing the treatments for the two-story family room windows, we took into account the need for light control, as well as the desire to preserve and enhance the idyllic water view. Motorized screen shades on the windows and doors provide a much needed respite from the heat and glare of the afternoon sun. The stationary linen panels in a natural color blend with the walls, keeping the focus on the landscape beyond the window.

In the game room, solid linen panels banded with a jute tape trim fit well in this casual, yet well appointed room. The Vignette roman shades in a woven material not only provide light and glare control, but also privacy when the room may be used for overnight guests.

The breakfast nook's bay window enhances the beautiful view of the water while adding interesting architectural detail. Our custom valance fits the angles, allowing a bird's-eye view of the water, while the shades tucked underneath go to work when privacy or sunlight filtering is desired. It's a win-win-window!

Create A Stylish Space - Team With A Designer

Spring is the season for re-birth and rejuvenation. It's also the perfect time to start planning a home renovation project - adding on a screened porch, remodeling your kitchen, or redecorating your living room. No matter what size your project, taking that first step can be overwhelming. Consider teaming with a design professional who can lead you through all levels of a project, from inception to installation.

These pros are responsible for envisioning, planning and outfitting a space in a way that makes it both beautiful and functional. They go beyond cosmetic concerns to ensure a space feels harmonious throughout, from its floor plan and architectural soundness, to the last nailhead, tassel and tuft. He or she balances aesthetic considerations with structural planning to reflect the client's lifestyle, set the desired mood, complement the home's architectural features, and ensure that less glamorous details (like electrical outlets and air vents) fit into the scheme. An interior designer also cultivates relationships with trusted artisans, vendors and others who execute the design. Their jobs are so in-depth, many states have a certification process to become one.

Following are some reasons why you'll benefit by working with one:

1. A design professional can have an objective view of the room(s) you're renovating or decorating. You may think a piece of furniture like a credenza or wall unit needs to go, but a designer may suggest accessories to soften and complement other pieces in the room.

2. A design professional has access to the newest furniture and fabrics only available to the trade - a way to capture your unique vision, one that you're not likely to see elsewhere in your community.

3. An interior designer can help bring your ideas to life, while taking care of all considerations from space-planning to the smallest details. A design professional will help you stay on budget and save money by avoiding costly mistakes. The greatest benefit is their trained eye in pulling a room together to tell a "visual story" in ways you might not have imagined.

Once you're ready to choose a design professional, begin by asking for friends' recommendations, check the designer's reputation through ratings and references, and look at his or her previous work to make sure their aesthetic tastes match yours.

If you're not ready for a major redecorating project, you may consider just refreshing a room. This doesn't have to involve a huge investment, but it can make a big difference. Create a dramatic new look by changing your paint color. Love your sofa but you're tired of the fabric? Give it a an update by having it reupholstered. Even adding or changing accessories such as area rugs, throws and pillows can make a room feel all new!

In summary, a design professional can save you money and frustration in the long run, and also be your friend and partner while helping you to realize your decorating dreams.
