Celebrating 15 Years
January 2016

Sew Beautiful

As we pack up the holiday lights and settle into the new year, many of us have a list of resolutions that include working on good habits and quitting bad habits. My new year's agenda includes several home decorating projects and I'm anxious to incorporate many of the 2016 trends! In our feature article, you can read about this year's hottest styles.

I am also excited and proud to share with you the culmination of the spectacular Annapolis Designer Collaborative Art (DeColArt) Showhouse that took place during the holiday season and benefitted the Wellness House of Annapolis.

Recently featured in Annapolis Home magazine, this was a collaborative, creative effort among local

designers and artists who repurposed a luxury condo out of an 1890s Gothic church in Annapolis' historic district. Sew Beautiful was invited to design the window coverings on the structure's only window - which just happened to be three stories tall! Check out the photos of our solution to this window challenge in our Featured Project section. (We have also pictured some of the ways the talented designers and artists have incorporated the newest trends into their work on the Showhouse in our Feature Article.)

Did You Know...

...that this year, for the first time ever, Pantone Color Institute has chosen two shades as Colors of the Year - Rose Quartz and Serenity! Pantone says, "Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness, as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. Pantone is considered the global color authority and provider of professional color standards for the design industries.

DeColArt Show Home in Annapolis

In December, a group of local artists and designers united to create the Design Collaborative Art Showhouse (DeColArt), dramatically repurposing an 1890s Gothic Revival church in Annapolis' historic district, and donating all money raised to the Wellness House of Annapolis. Sew Beautiful was invited to cover this home's only window - a tall, Gothic-arch window that rises three stories! Read about the Showhouse in detail in this recent Annapolis Home magazine article, and read our Feature Article in this newsletter to see how some of the other designers and artists incorporated the latest trends into their space in the Showhome.

We decided this challenging window that rises so dramatically high in this loft-style condo needed a motorized window treatment. Since it has a western exposure, light control is a necessity, especially late afternoon in the summer months. Our solution: Hunter Douglas Pirouette shades with the new PowerView lift system. Their soft, fabric vanes, attached to a sheer backing, make them appear to be floating, drawing natural light into the room. Pirouette shades are a beautiful option that offer privacy and light control while reducing glare and UV damage. The PowerView Motorization lift system can be operated via the PowerView smartphone App or via its unique "Pebble" remote control. This allows the owner the ultimate in versatility, enabling shade programming for carefree convenience. Best of all they, can be operated, or the settings changed, from anywhere in the world!

Decorating Trends for 2016

Style trends are not just for the fashion industry; why should runways have all the fun? Your house deserves to be decorated and adorned with the newest home decor. Modern interior design is always changing and evolving, and even subtle updates can have a dramatic impact on the feel of a room. We have put together a list of some of the top trends for 2016, and have followed it with photos of some of these trends, as seen in the Annapolis DeColArt Showhouse (Read about it in our Feature Project section of this newsletter).

1.   Artisan Craftsmanship/Artisanal - Items hand-crafted with skill and passion by artists can add a creative finishing touch to your decor. From kitchen accessories to homemade furniture, these are the pieces that define your distinctive personality.

2.     Ethereal Glam - Earth tones and neutrals have been replaced by more glamorous clean lines, white, brass and acrylic, giving interiors an ethereal feel. Modern and bold, yet uncomplicated, simplicity is the key to composing this luxurious look.

3.     White and gold - Chic, sophisticated glamour and shine is the key to this look, which combines variations of brass and gilded surfaces with clean white fabrics, natural wood and stone.

4.     Metals of honor - The days of matching your metals are over. Gold, silver, copper, pewter and bronze luxuriously mingle side-by-side in hardware, appliances, lamps, wallpaper and even fabrics. Metallic detailing is a popular way to take your furnishings from ordinary to glamorous. Best of all, mixed metals suit all decorating styles, from traditional to contemporary.

5.     Geometrics - In patterns, geometrics continue to lead the pack. Today's geometric designs make a bold, glamorous statement in fabrics, rugs, lampshades, hardware, wallpaper and even backsplashes and stair risers.

6.     Automation and Motorization - Window treatments have gotten smarter with the introduction of advanced motorized operating systems that enable homeowners to easily control treatments in the home or remotely using an app-enabled device. The PowerView motorization system from Hunter Douglas makes the smart home a reality by providing users the ability to operate and schedule window treatment activity using a controller, smartphone or tablet.

7.     Layered Designs - Just as layered clothing is fashionable on the runways this year, layering your windows is also big in 2016. Dressing windows in multiple layers not only adds aesthetic pleasure, but it also increases energy efficiency, privacy and light filtering. Draperies pair especially well with custom blinds and shades. Layering also works well with bedding, as in bedspreads, coverlets, shams and pillows. To optimize this look, colors and textures should be chosen that complement - not compete - with each other.
