I love August - traditionally reserved for our family vacation, this month conjures up memories of spending time with my husband and daughters at Deep Creek Lake. My perfect recipe for relaxation includes sitting on the sunny dock with a good book, or sipping wine in the evening.

Even though we miss summer when it ends, there are ways to treat your home so you can feel like it's summer long after the last black-eyed-Susan has bloomed. Read our Feature Article for tips on how to "Bring Summer Home." Also in this newsletter, check out our Feature Project, where we updated a client's living room using these same concepts.

Relax and enjoy the remainder of summer, and don't fret about it ending because now you know how to bring it home!

All the best -

Did You Know...

Did you know that local artist Victoria Larson has a line of beautifully designed fabrics? Stop by our studio to see Victoria's colorful creations. This is a pattern called Flamingo Parade, made of cotton sateen. It is available in Navy Reverse, Navy on White, Coral Reverse and Fuchsia Reverse (shown here). We can't think of a better way to bring summer home!

Feature Project

Time spent at the beach was the inspiration for this client's living room. Using the family's seaside accessories as a starting point, we chose fabrics in colors reminiscent of the ocean. The embroidered linen panels, in sandy beige and sea-glass green, frame the three windows, while the relaxed Roman shades, in a blue-green striae fabric, mirror the soothing movement of ocean waves. The beaded trim and decorative hardware add the finishing touches to this beautiful treatment.

Bring Summer Home

Swimming, boating, flowers, popsicles... who doesn't love summer? If only there were a way to make it last all year long! While we can't make that magic happen, we can help you bring summer home so you can carry that carefree and relaxing vacation atmosphere throughout all the other seasons. Following are some ideas that will help make your home feel like a perpetual vacation getaway:

  1. De-clutter: Decide what you absolutely love in your space and keep it. Give away all the other things. Vacation homes usually only have a minimal amount of "stuff," lending themselves to simple living. If your rooms are less cluttered, they'll also look larger.
  2. Swap out heavy and dark soft furnishings for light and bright: This is especially true for slipcovers, bedspreads and throw pillows. Crisp whites and florals will make your home light and airy. Exchange heavy fabrics for breezier ones, such as chiffon or organza. Swap your dining-room tablecloth for natural woven placemats, and get new, quick-drying towels for the baths.
  3. Paint: Freshen up your walls with light-colored paint, and consider brightening up light furniture with a colorful coat of paint. Try
Annie Sloan Chalk Board Paint, which can be used indoors or outdoors on almost any type of surface.
  4. Update your window coverings: Let in more natural light by replacing heavy draperies with lighter fabrics or sheers. If your windows are small, a decorator can help you design treatments that will enhance your windows without blocking any of the light. Shades underneath can be used when you want privacy at night or darkness while sleeping.
  5. Bring the outdoors in: Keep flowers and houseplants in the house year-round. Toss some fragrant herbs, such as mint, rosemary or sage, into arrangements to give your home a pleasant, relaxing aroma. Swap out your regular bath and shower products for ones with summer scents.
  6. Add a rug: Lay down a natural rug, such as sisal, or one with a light, floral print. Better yet, have a rug custom-made for your space that will match your décor and be personalized.

Now that you know how to bring summer home, we hope you can relax and enjoy an endless summer!
